Seven shock upsets produced in the FA Trophy Second Round

Seven shock upsets were produced in the FA Trophy Second Round with the competition hotting up nicely with eyes firmly on the prize.

The 2021–22 competition is the 53rd season of the FA Trophy, an annual football competition for teams at levels 5-8 of the English National League System.

The competition consists of three qualifying rounds, and seven proper rounds. Teams from level 8 enter into the first qualifying round and second qualifying round, level 7 into the third qualifying round, level 6 (the National League North and National League South) into round 2, and level 5 (the National League) into round 3.

All matches will be in a single-match knockout format, with the winner decided by penalties if the match was drawn after 90 minutes, apart from the Final where the winner will be decided by extra-time and penalties if the match is drawn.

This is the same format as the 2020–21 season which was a change from previous seasons where replays were used and where the semi-finals were scheduled as two-legged.

Of all those to cause an upset, it was AFC Totton of the Southern League Division One South who produced the biggest win against National League South outfit Concord Rangers.

On the 13th minute, the deadlock was broken when Ethan Taylor lined up a strike from 20 yards out with his wicked left foot into the far bottom corner which beat Roberts.

On the 21st minute, it was two for Totton. Ngalo did well to beat a few men on the right to feed Taylor.

He made the perfect choice to bring Griffin into action with the in-form wide-man cutting inside onto his right and the ball goes past Roberts via a deflection.

Ngalo does so well to beat a few men on the right to feed Taylor. He makes the perfect choice to bring Griffin into action. The in-form wide-man cuts inside onto his right and it beats Roberts via a deflection!

Three minutes after that, Griffin scored again to make it three. He striked a venomous drive towards the Concord keeper but he couldn’t keep it out despite getting a strong hand to it.

The second half was similar to the first Totton going four up on the 49th minute, Hisham Kasimu had just missed a golden opportunity after an awful mistake from Roberts but made up for it by scoring. The ball bobbled around the box from a corner and Hish stabbed the ball home.

The 53rd minute saw Totton go 5-0 up against the 2020 finalists. Adam Tomasso I can’t believe what I’m watching. Tomasso got his head to the ball from a short corner routine and it nestles into the bottom corner.

Jack Crago would hit a 59th minute winner to send Southern League Division One South side Plymouth Parkway into the Third Round for their first time ever, knocking out National League South outfit Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-0.
