Sergej Jakirovic calls for VAR and blasts referee after Craig Forsyth scores despite being offside

Sergej Jakirovic calls for VAR in the Championship and blasts referee Adam Herczeg after Craig Forsyth scores despite being offside.

The game played out to a 4-2 win for Hull, ending a three-game winless run, thanks to late goals from John Egan and Lewis Koumas, boosting the Tigers’ playoff hopes and denting Derby’s.

The first half saw four goals with the hosts ahead twice following a Callum Elder own goal and a strike by Ollie McBurnie strike, then Derby levelled twice with goals from Craig Forsyth and Sammie Szmodics.

John Egan put Hull ahead again before Koumas came off the bench and sealed the win.

The result sees Hull now six points behind 2nd place Middlesbrough, but for Derby, they’ve three defeat from their last four, and six points from the playoff places.

“I’m very happy because the players showed great team effort, a lot of fighting over the pitch, first and second ball, front foot, a lot of challenges,” said Jakirovic, as per Yorkshire Post.

“We changed our style today, we didn’t have build-up, open play sometimes, because of the condition of the pitch, we were very pragmatic.

“But we were very aggressive in those challenges, and from then we scored nice two goals (in the first half). Of course, first goal is from a set-piece (corner), but we had good chances.

“We have to continue like this.

“I said to the lads, I don’t care about the impression, this is for something, maybe next time. I just care that we take three points. That was very important.

“We took our lessons from QPR because I was very angry on Saturday, the players know that. We cannot lose our tactical discipline there that we have. It’s 1-1 in 18 minutes, and then until 90, we can consider three, four goals.

“So that was the reason why I was very angry. And I think they responded very well.

“I’m very direct in this analysis after the game.

“They showed today that we can play pragmatic football.”

“Every time it’s poor when you concede,” he commented, but it’s offside. It’s clear offside.

“This changes the momentum of the game.

“I think that he lost control in the first half after his yellow card to No 7 (Patrick Agyemang, in the second minute).

“He must manage the game. Maybe it’s too much for him, too big a game.

“There is no consistency, and this is something I’m worried about.

“There are a lot of challenges, a lot of hands, a lot of pushing, pulling.

“We need VAR.”

Not that it was all Herczeg’s fault.

“When we have our set-up on the corner, I think it’s okay, because we always clear this ball,” added Jakirovic. “But the second ball, I think that we felt we needed a better reset.”

Derby manager John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

“I am disappointed we lost the game. The effort was fantastic tonight, we created some unbelievable chances, and on another night we could have scored five or six.

“Last week at Watford we lacked that effort and desire, and tonight we had it all over the pitch.

“We didn’t defend the box well enough, all four goals could have been stopped, for sure. But there’s a lot of positives to take from tonight.

“We had to make a lot of changes tonight, the back four was playing out of position, but we are where we are with our injury situations.

Eustace, per Sky Sports:

“I’m disappointed to lose, of course. It was a cracking game and I’m proud of the efforts of the group.

“We had great chances to score more, but I was disappointed with all four goals we gave away.

“We were very disappointed (against Watford) on Saturday, but we battled very well and should really be coming away with at least a point.

“We’ve had three or four one-one-one chances – we could have scored five or six goals for sure – but goals change games.

“If we put one of them away it’s a different story, but we were against a top team who took their chances.”

Fans reacted after Sergej Jakirovic calls for VAR and blasts the referee after Craig Forsyth scores despite being offside…

@LeeScott92: He’s a yard offside for fuck sake #hcafc

@CraigHCAFC01: How far offside

@Fletch2sv: Derby first goal only 2 yards offside #hcafc

@adbr1985: No wonder the manager was going mental for their first goal. Miles offside #hcafc

@o_dcfc: I think the fact that both fanbases equally think the ref was against them shows how poor he was 😭

@Ashley979278196: All round disasterclass of a refereeing performance. In this particular case, there is even rugby lines (arguably better then VAR lines) showing how offside he was.

@LukeDJacks: Miles offside 🤣 derby deserved to go in level still, played well first half

@jimbobram92: Mad take. He must have thought he was reffing a Hull KR game the amount of fouls he let you lot get away with
