Sam Clucas impresses in his interview explaining decision to sign for Shrewsbury

Sam Clucas impresses in his interview explaining his decision to sign for Shrewsbury Town, who prepare for life in League Two next season.

Salop has signed 34-year-old midfielder Sam Clucas on a two-year deal, effective July 1st, pending EFL approval, after his contract with Lincoln City expires.

Clucas brings extensive experience with 66 Premier League appearances, over 200 Championship games, and more than 100 League One and Two matches.

Known for his goal-scoring ability, he has 117 goal contributions in nearly 500 career games. Transitioning from a left winger to a central midfielder, Clucas is expected to mentor academy players.

Speaking with the club’s media, he expressed excitement about joining, citing alignment with the head coach’s vision and a prior connection with director of football Micky Moore.

Moore highlighted Clucas’ experience and leadership, noting his role alongside new signing Tom Anderson in strengthening the team and guiding younger players.

We are thrilled to announce the signing of ball-playing midfielder Sam Clucas on a two-year deal!

The 34-year-old will officially become a Shrewsbury Town player on July 1 when his contract with Lincoln City comes to an end, subject to EFL approval.

With 66 Premier League appearances and over 200 Championship games to his name, as well as over 100 combined League One and League Two outings, Sam brings exceptional experience to Salop.

A left winger turned central midfielder, Sam has a very impressive record in front of goal, having racked up 117 goal contributions in just under 500 career matches.

His experience will also be key in helping us develop our academy players in and around the first team.

Speaking to Town in his first interview, Sam said: “I’m really excited to get my teeth into this.

“I spoke to the head coach very early on in the window and he made it clear he wanted me.

“If someone wants you to come and play, that’s the most important thing.

“I spoke to people who have worked with him before and got really good reviews.

“I saw how he played against Lincoln (last month) and that suits me down to the ground.

“For me, it was a perfect fit.

“And to have someone I already know in the club in Micky, it’s an exciting challenge for me.”

Director of football, Micky Moore, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Sam to the club.

“He brings a wealth of experience and strong leadership qualities – attributes we believe are vital to strengthening the spine of our team.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Sam for over a decade, having coached him during my time as assistant manager.

“I know firsthand the value he brings both on and off the pitch.

“With the additions of both Sam and Tom Anderson, we’re confident their experience will play a crucial role in guiding the group and supporting the development of our younger players as we prepare for the season ahead.”

@impsasone11: He’s a class player he will do well for you. 👍

@tomhwilliams23: Shrewsbury starting their L2 business with some big, experienced names! Obvious downsides are Clucas is 34 and played just 17 games last season. But at this level, you’d imagine he’s still got plenty of quality to offer. Interesting start from Shrewsbury! Want to bounce back

@joesus11: Wow was not expecting that

@PJKindness: Welcome to Salop Sam

@Jack642784: Bloody hell we’re actually going for it aren’t we!?

@HarryUTS17: Ffs that’s a good signing and all

@Jake_Tonge98: Quality signing for Shrewsbury, a little bit sad to see him released a couple weeks ago. Cluey will be fantastic in L2, if they can keep him away from injury. Gives me real vibes of when we signed Liam Bridcutt under Appleton. Should pull the strings for #Salop next season.

@Cam3Evans: Was not expecting that 😍 superb signing and will add some much needed quality and experience to our midfield! 2 fantastic signings so far 🔷🔶

@WillFarr12: Micheal Appleton, I am fully invested! What a coup, SALOP!

@MightyMillers20: Great signing that, Sam was quality for us when fit

@willthomas67: Happy with that again. Age is just a number in L2, between him Anderson and Marquis we have some very good experience in the side now.

@callumfinazzi: HMS Piss the league
