Salford City consult fans on changing club’s primary colours, crest and branding

Salford City consult fans on changing club’s primary colours, crest and branding, with the plan to revert back to orange, from red.

An initial proposal from the League Two promotion hopefuls was well-received, with around 90% of fans at a meeting supporting the change.

Feedback has been collected, with further discussion planned for September 23rd, 2025. A fan vote on both the colour and crest change is set for October 6th until the 10th, requiring a two-thirds majority to pass, verified by an independent body.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Salford City has started a heritage consultation process with our fanbase as we explore reverting to orange as the Club’s primary colour, alongside updating the Club crest.

An initial proposal was shared with supporters by co-owner Gary Neville and Head of Creative Andrew Gordon during a meeting at the Peninsula Stadium, which was positively received by those present. Approximately 90% of the fans in attendance stated they would be in favour of the change, strongly indicating that they would like to proceed with a vote.

The Club is now inviting fans to submit any feedback on the proposition to revert the Club’s primary colour to orange by Wednesday 17th September. This would include updating the crest, and all Club branding including stadium and seat colour.

On their graphics, they wrote: “One thing Salfordians can’t stand? Being mislabelled—especially as Mancunians.

“Salfordians are fiercely proud of their own identity, their own stories, their own Gory. stand out, the club needs the same boldness.

“That’s why we’re uniting past and present by embracing our tangerine heritage and modern style to adopt a striking new colour: ORANGE. This isn’t just a colour. It’s our identity.

“From the terraces to the training ground, from the park pitches to the supermarket queue—when you see orange, you’ll know what it means: THIS IS SALFORD. Proud. Unmistakable.

“Whatever first drew you to Salford City FC — your first match, first scarf, first memory— will all be represented in a new crest.

“One that will bring together elements from every chapter of our history, honouring the journey that got us here while boldly stepping into the future. “Celebrating our heritage. Inspiring our future.

In August, Gary Neville opened up on ambitious plans for Salford City and also spoke more on US investors’ interest in English football.

The Salford co-owner, announced AIG as a minority investor to transform the club into a “serious business” on and off the pitch, targeting Championship promotion in five years.

Despite £28million losses from infrastructure investments, the club aims for sustainability through revenue growth via deals (e.g., Coca-Cola, Dream Set Go in India), a player trading model, and shareholder expertise.

He also predicts continued US investment in English clubs due to perceived value, noting over a third of the 92 professional teams already have US ownership, and global reach compared to US franchises, alongside a mix of local, international, and sovereign wealth investors.

Former co-owners Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes have sold their stakes but will remain in various roles.

After majority shareholder Peter Lim’s exit in 2024, Beckham and Neville partnered with Declan Kelly, Lord Mervyn Davies, and others, including Frank Ryan, Shravin Mittal, Nick Woodhouse, Colin Ryan, and Dream Sports Group, raising $15-20 million.

The consortium holds 80% of the club, with 20% reserved for future partners. A new chief executive will manage daily operations.

Simon Jordan gave his take on Gary Neville and David Beckham amid plans for Salford City. He spoke of his skepticism about their motives and methods, accusing them of mimicking Wrexham’s high-profile, investment-driven model under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

While Simon acknowledged Neville’s resourcefulness, he criticised his outspokenness on football governance, suggesting it’s inconsistent with Salford’s heavy spending, which has previously drawn scrutiny for potential Financial Fair Play breaches.

Jordan then said Neville and Beckham’s financial backing relies on others’ wealth, not their own, questioning the authenticity of their project.
