Ryan Mason FURIOUS after getting sent off for dissent with West Brom denied appeals

Ryan Mason was FURIOUS after getting sent off for dissent with West Brom denied appeals in their 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

In the 70th minute, the Baggies head coach was sent off with a red card by referee Elliot Bell, leading to a touchline ban.

The incident followed a denied penalty appeal, Mason’s protests earned a booking. Moments later, he was dismissed for disputing a non-call on a foul.

West Brom said in their match report: A strong Albion penalty shout was turned away after Heggebø looked to have been brought down inside the box – and the referee sent Head Coach Ryan Mason off shortly after.

Portsmouth said on their website: The game was starting to drift, but it came alive when Heggebø got into the box and was tackled by Ogilvie. West Brom were adamant it was a foul, but referee Elliot Bell disagreed and Mason’s protests earned him a booking. But the head coach was soon having to walk down the tunnel after angrily disagreeing with a decision not to award a free-kick against Regan Poole a few moments later.

West Bromwich Albion assistant manager Nigel Gibbs told BBC Radio WM:

“We’re a little bit frustrated that we didn’t win the game. We had a lot of possession that second-half, we just couldn’t find the moment to get us the winner. We felt we had a penalty in that second-half but it wasn’t given.

“We pushed right to the end and we looked like the team that was going to get the winner, they didn’t have that many chances against us. The lads gave great effort today and they kept pushing to get the winner.

On the penalty appeal and Mason sending-off:

“From where I was it looked a penalty, as did the crowd – everyone in the stadium thought it was a penalty – they didn’t. It’s frustrating, disappointing what went on. That’s football.

“The boys really responded well after that which was the most important thing. They stayed calm, they kept playing, they kept pushing and we had a couple of moments near the end where we nearly got the ball in the right area or it fell to us but it wasn’t to be.”

Gibbs, per Sky Sports:

“From where we were sitting we thought it was a penalty, but the referee didn’t give us the decision.

“These things happen and we have just got to keep focused to the end, which I thought the players did.

“Ryan spoke to the players afterwards and then I have come straight here. So I haven’t had chance to speak to him.

“Credit to the boys, they kept their discipline and kept pushing to the end but we couldn’t find that opening to get that second goal.”

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

“It’s a brilliant point. It’s a step up in terms of the result and certainly in terms of the performance. We deserved it.

“We should have gone ahead. I thought we had the better of the chances and after the equaliser as well we had a 10-15 minute spell where we looked much the better side. Naturally towards the end with the changes that both sides make – we’re giving debuts and bringing some young players on – we sank in and had to do a bit of last ditch defending but ultimately the lads really deserved a point.

“As good as West Brom are I didn’t think they created a huge amount against us. They had the chance but it’s a shot from the edge of the area and there was a chance at the back post but it was given offside. Apart from that I can’t remember Nico [Schmid] having to do a huge amount

Mousinho, per Sky Sports:

“I spoke to the referee’s assistant just after the penalty incident and he felt that Connor Ogilvie had won the ball.

“At the time I thought we might have been slightly lucky to get away with that (Poole on Heggebo) one.

“I spoke to a couple of the West Brom players and they said Heggebo said he had full hold on Regan’s shirt as well.

“I have to say there were times in the first half when it seemed like George Campbell (Albion centre half) could do whatever he wanted to Colby Bishop.

“There was an incident in the second half where he (Campbell) had two arms across him (Bishop) and dragged him down.

“It’s the most obvious foul, so give it. I thought it evened itself out over the game.”

Here’s how fans reacted with Ryan Mason FURIOUS after getting sent off for dissent with West Brom denied appeals…

@owenthfc__: Mase had every right to be seething. Ref isn’t fit enough to even do non league nevermind the championship

@sooty19771: Shambolic officials… That Ref is a disgrace

@TomMcCarthy92: And this is why players have to chuck themselves to the floor, to get our inept championship referees to make a decision. I’m not surprised he was furious

@niallk453: should never ref in the championship again thats disgraceful

@Gabe_Wilcox17: Mason gets sent off for being furious with wrong decisions that cost them potentially the win but the ref will have a game next weekend… efl officials are getting worse every week

@Fozza11_: One of the worst referees I’ve seen in years. Not just embarrassing, it’s actually quite insulting.

@notJoth: Ref won’t have to explain his decisions and Mason will be fined and suspended. The absolute state of them decisions though 😂

@conor_spurs: Got to love refs doubling down on shocking decisions by sending off the appalled managers.

@Stu1906: Ref was crap all game…clearly out of his depth

@BradTalksBall: Worst refereeing performance I’ve seen in some time, clueless and completely lost control of the game.

@Heidi_wba: Just to add to the fun of it all, pretty much straight after taking the throwing that was conceded at the end of that clip, Albion gave away a free kick. For shirt pulling. Not saying that it shouldn’t have been given but, you know, you can imagine how it went down!

@WildingSimon: It was the ref’s 6th ever pro game, and it showed. Totally lost control of the game. Was happy making the easy decisions but didn’t want to make any difficult ones, which could potentially impact the game. Couldn’t wait to send Mason off though. Out of his depth.

@TM_WBA07: They need to start interviewing the refs watching it back after the game and explaining it. Or just demote the refs and improve the quality of training before you give them football league games. This is just 2 examples in 1 game of the poor officiating the whole EFL receives

@Dan23_92: This is where dissent laws have been a mess for years. Players or managers get fucked over by inept officiating and then get punished for justifiable frustration.

@jakedcfc18: There’s poor refereeing then there’s refereeing that needs investigating for match fixing this is the latter! We’re only a couple of weeks into the season and there’s been so many examples across all 4 divisions how low the standard of refereeing is these days!

@cji1981: That’s fucking shocking refereeing, the quality of refs is awful, yet players and managers cannot even comment of the state of them because the @FA_PGMOL and the respective leagues are just a cartel

@ThaStippaman: Shocking ref standards in England. What on earth do we teach in this country now when it comes to football. Coaches are robots and officials are completely terrible. Whole system needs throwing in the bin. We can’t get any worse at this game top to bottom. The refs are shocking
