Roy Keane calls Liverpool supporters ‘classless’ for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold after leaving the Reds for Real Madrid in the summer.
He came off the bench for the Champions league meeting on Tuesday night, TAA returning to Merseyside and has his mural defaced. Trent came on for the final nine minutes and was booed with every touch.
Pundits on The Overlap unanimously agreed the booing was wrong, each offering distinct critiques of the fans’ reaction.

Keane: “The reputation of Liverpool fans is that there loyal and a level up from most supporters.
“But I think for any player to go back, to boo him, people pay their money to go and that’s fine, you’re not going to argue with supporters but…”
Wright: “You know what Roy when you look at him, when he was a youngster, he’d have been dreaming of winning all those things for Liverpool. He’d think ‘one day I’ll leave and I can come back and it will be great’, but the fact is when he was getting ready to leave, that is what he was thinking about.
“So I was more concerned for him when Liverpool [supporters] were booing him when he was there. He would have expected that last night, especially with the way he left, and that was the saddest thing that he had to deal with that.
“But that’s what happens especially when you choose somebody else, especially over Liverpool, they’re going to hold that against you.”

Keane: “I know Jamie made a point over the last few days, comparing it to Van Dijk and Salah, but they’re older players that have had experience abroad, Trent is mid-20s, his contract is up and he has the chance to try something completely different.”
Neville: “Also Roy, it is Real Madrid.”
Keane: “Of course, but Liverpool fans will obviously think ‘we are the biggest club in the world’ like all supporters. I’m not saying you give him the thumbs up for leaving you, but why would you go to a match and boo a lad who has played 260/270 games, stats are fantastic.
“You don’t have to wish him luck in Madrid but to go to the effort of thinking, ‘I’m going to boo this kid’ as a local lad and Liverpool fans for some reason think we’ve got class, no Liverpool fans have to have a good look at themselves.
“The beauty with Trent over the last year or two is that he has said very little, he’s not been one to say, ‘oh I’d love to stay here’, he has actually kept his mouth shut and sometimes that’s not a bad thing to do. How many times do you see players say, ‘oh I love this club’ and then they leave. He kept it cool.
“It’s just an experience for the kid, again to compare him to Van Dijk and Salah, they have played in Europe and moved clubs. But for a young player to go and try something new, to boo the kid [scoffs], bloody hell, you don’t have to cheer him on but don’t boo him.”
Scholes: “He probably left a better team to go to a worse team.”
Jamie Carragher meanwhile spoke on Trent Alexander-Arnold and the booing from Liverpool fans: āSupporters decide what type of reaction he gets. The reason why it will be poor is because Trent, throughout those 20 years, has played the position of: āI’m a supporter on the pitch.ā
āThe supporters in the stadium wouldn’t leave on a free transfer and go and play for Real Madrid. OK, it’s his career and he only gets one. He’s a young man and he’s been brilliantly successful.
āBut what he’s said since he got in the Liverpool team, if that were to be true, that Liverpool is the only team for him and he wants to be captain and be a legend here, then you don’t leave when you’ve just won the league title and you’ve got the opportunity to go and win more trophies with your club.
āYou join a club that’s beaten you twice in the Champions League final and they’re the club you want to compete more to win more Champions Leagues? I totally understand the reaction of the supporters.
āA lot of it is because they feel they’ve been hoodwinked a little bit by Trent throughout the process of him being at the club and also in the last year, where he hasn’t done any media interviews or said anything.
āThere was talk around him, Salah and Van Dijk – who were both coming out constantly in the press saying they want to stay. Trent was very silent on the issue – and that’s where the frustration comes from for supporters.ā
Jamie Carragher explaining to people why Trentās reception was the way that it was.
Liverpool fans boo him for a reason. Many players have left and weāve never cared – thatās normal. But the way he did it was definitely not the right way to do things. pic.twitter.com/HeVmxGlm0X

Here’s what Twitter users said as Roy Keane calls Liverpool supporters ‘classless’ for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold…
@Dom_1810: If Carragher was on the show they wouldnāt have said half of this because heād explain why itās completely rational to boo him then theyād move on swiftly.
@RedMen94: Local lad, vice captain, says his dream is to captain us, avoids all media duties all season, says contract talks not public, kisses the badge, chat gesture his own fans to say itās all talk, then turns up in Madrid fluent in spanish. All Trentās biggest fan now are ya? Hilarious
@Redsmail: Manchester City fans booed James Milner every time Liverpool played them. James Milner. Pick the bones out of that one before you go anywhere near the TAA story. Clubs boo former players. Itās not a story.
@BackseatsmanLFC: Pundits have had 6 months to understand the situation and perspective of Liverpool fans and still outright refuse to do so. At this point you’re just lazy and bad at your job. The same points regurgitated over and over again with no nuance.
@Thomas_Strain: The thing nobody ever says – if Trent came out and said āIāve done all this and I wanna try something differentā 18 months before he left, it would have been so different. He strung us along to get the best deal for himself. So now he deals with what that brings.
@tobyjuggs98: 2 of these slated him all time for his defending constantly now they canāt stop defending him about something he had full control of, fucking boring shouldnāt even be a topic or conversation
@CodyzHyper: Actually crazy how out of touch non Liverpool fans are regarding booing Trent.. the way he left and this whole persona that heās one of us, was all a lie. Heād make comments how he wants to be future captain and it means more to play for Liverpool. All a lie.
@Dutton_1986: Someone who purposely ended another players career, is now concerned about a player being booed. Not sure Iāll worry too much about what he thinks of me as a fan to be honest
@JoshuaL97986931: Would a 26 year old Gary Neville of left United to go to Madrid when they challenged for everything? No, because at United and Liverpool we believe playing for these clubs is the absolute dream and taking trophies away from the European rivals is the goal.
@JamieBurns_94: What makes me laugh about this is the fact all the pundits like Roy and Gary who have been giving him some harsh criticism for years for his performances now saying itās disrespectful booing because of what heās given for the football club make your minds up.
@Lewypayne: As Iāve said before, thereās a way to leave and he done it totally wrong. We had no problem with him leaving but the way he went about it was wrong. Just say from the beginning Iām leaving for a new challenge then thatās fair enough. Drag it out like did was wrong.
@johngibbonsblog: People, especially footballers, need to stop trying to make sense of what football fans do because really none of what we do makes sense and no one benefits more from that than footballers themselves
