Rotherham confirm permanent appointment of first team manager as replacement for Steve Evans

Rotherham United confirm the permanent appointment of first team manager Matt Hamshaw as replacement for the departed Steve Evans.

Matt Hamshaw had been in caretaker charge until the end of the season, assisted by Andy Warrington, but he has now signed three-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Of the 4 games he has taken charge of, he has won 3, drew 0 and lost just 1, with the Millers currently sitting 13th in League One with 54 points 42 games played .

WHAT HAVE THE CLUB SAID

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that Matt Hamshaw has accepted the club’s offer to become our permanent first team manager and has signed a three-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The impact that Matt and Andy Warrington’s arrival has had on the team and, indeed, throughout the club has been clear for all to see and following conversations both at Board level and with Matt himself about our respective ambitions, we are thrilled to confirm that he will be the man to take us forward into the next chapter here at Rotherham United.

The agreement will see Hamshaw given the opportunity to add further coaching staff to his backroom team – when he deems it suitable to do so, but in time to appropriately prepare for the 2025/26 campaign – and will eventually pave the way for Andy Warrington to become our permanent goalkeeping coach once those appointments have been confirmed.

The Rawmarsh-raised coach has a long association with Rotherham United and can call upon experience within the club’s youth setup before he stepped up to a first team role during the tenure of Paul Warne.

Hamshaw was an integral part of that same coaching staff who delivered enormous success under Warne, which included a season that broke a number of club and league records in 2021/22 and culminated in promotion as Sky Bet League One runners-up and the club being crowned the Papa Johns Trophy champions at Wembley.

His role during those years at Roundwood formed part of the collective effort which produced a team with a culture which we could all be immensely proud of, both on the pitch and in the community.

Hamshaw has since furthered his footballing education with another promotion from League One with Paul Warne at Derby County and has showcased his credentials as a manager across a four-game stint since his return to AESSEAL New York Stadium which has yielded nine points.

The Board unequivocally agrees that he is an individual that possesses all of the attributes to succeed in this role and that the time is right for him to take his first official steps into football management.

To reaffirm that, Hamshaw has committed his long-term future to the Millers despite interest in his services in coaching circles from a club in the Premier League and another in the Sky Bet Championship.

So far, Hamshaw has taken charge of four first team fixtures, winning three of those, whilst delivering a playing style built on the foundations of hard work and togetherness – qualities that both the manager and Board have agreed must form the cornerstone of our playing style moving forwards.

Speaking following the paperwork being finalised to tie Matt Hamshaw down as our permanent first team manager, Chairman Tony Stewart said:

“Matt Hamshaw hasn’t just impressed us with performances on the pitch but also with his ambition and passion for the club off it which comes across clearly every time we speak or he is interviewed by the media.

“His association with this football club is well-documented and his knowledge and understanding of what our supporters want to see from their team is unrivalled through his connections as a coach here previously and his lifelong support as a fan.

“It was clear to us from a very early stage in his tenure that Matt was the individual that we wanted to take us forward and while we were keen to formalise that arrangement at the earliest possible opportunity, we also wanted to be respectful of him and allow him some time to consider our offer amidst a whirlwind opening to life in the role.

“Matt has had offers on the table from a number of clubs since he returned to Rotherham United, but having spoken open and honestly about the challenge here and the opportunity it represents for both ourselves and Matt in respect of his managerial ambitions, it was universally agreed that we share a real excitement about what we can achieve together.

“Not only is Matt an incredibly talented coach, he is also an individual who we feel embodies what the club stands for both on and off the pitch. He is the kind of hard-working and heart-on-his-sleeve character that has historically enjoyed great success here and – as we did with Paul Warne when he made the step up from the coaching ranks – we see great potential within him as a leader, which we are confident will become even more clearly evident throughout his time as our manager.

“While the conversations regarding Matt taking the role were concluded quickly, they were not without him being keen to stress that he wanted to be a part of a vision of a future for the club and we were very much on the same page in discussions regarding where we both see Rotherham United’s potential.

“Beyond that, it feels fitting and fills us with immense pride that someone from the town, who understands the DNA of who we are as clearly as Matt does, will be leading us into our Centenary Year.”
