Rotherham commentator made to look like a ‘right knob’ for what he said as Stoke score free kick

A commentator for Rotherham’s iFollow was made to look like a ‘right knob’ for what he said as Stoke went on to score a free kick.

The two guys on comms had a chuckle between each other, with one seemingly convinced that Lewis Baker wasn’t going to score from his set piece.

The 28-year-old stepped up an curled it into the top corner as the first half was coming to an end, silencing the doubter on commentary as his colleague took over to announce the goal.

One commentator is heard discussing the “situation”.

His colleague adds “what are you talking about?”

Commentator 1: “If anything, it’s too close. It’s so hard to get it over a wall. That’s the skill set. It’s not an easy tool, this.

Commentator 2: Get it banged on target.

Commentator 1: No, it’s not that simple.

Commentator 2: It’s Baker for Stoke. Oh, what a goal that is. He’s made it look simple. Right into the net.”

It ended up being the only goal of the game, with Stoke now extending their unbeaten Championship run to seven matches (their longest streak since April 2019) with a narrow 1-0 victory at bottom of the table Rotherham, Steven Schumacher’s second victory in the hot-seat.

The result also means that the Potters haven’t lost since their home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on the 9th of December 2023, which cost former boss Alex Neil his job.

Rotherham’s Leam Richardson said after the game, as per themillers.co.uk: “I thought the game was a 0-0. Neither ‘keeper had much to do. Tactically we cancelled each other back in large parts.

“In the second half particularly, I thought we were the aggressors without actually opening them up and creating any quality of chances.

“That was a game in which we could have positive result. We got into areas within the final third where we’d want to make better decisions and more aggressive decisions.

“It’s a good healthy challenge for us at the minute, and we need to be functioning at 100% every game to get over this challenge that we face.

“We can never disregard the commitment, and the work ethic, and the endeavour from the players and from the group.

“It was one of those games where if you don’t win, you certainly don’t want to lose. Unfortunately, it was a moment of real quality that won them the game.”

Stoke’s Steven Schumacher said, via stokecityfc.com: “It was a brilliant win, a massive three points for us,” Schumacher said post-match. “I said in the pre-match press that I felt it would be a huge game and if we could get three points it would give everybody another lift and keep building confidence.

“We had to show different sides to our game today and we saw in the first couple of minutes what to expect when the first two throw-ins were launched into our box.

“We stood up to everything Rotherham threw at us and I am really pleased with that.

“We tried to stay as far away from our goal as possible and not sink into the box, which Hughesy [Mark Hughes, Assistant Head Coach] has been working on with the team all week.

“We then showed character again after we scored right on the stroke of half-time.

“We expected a reaction from Rotherham, which is what we got, and for 15 minutes they put us under real pressure.

“The most pleasing thing was that we didn’t wilt, teams at the bottom end of the division can quite often concede in those moments but we didn’t and that shows the lads have character, stood up to the battle and defended our box really well.”

“It was a worldie, such a good goal,” Schumacher said on Baker’s free kick.

“He has lots of ability and can score from outside of the box with both feet.

“He will be so important for the team because, in the system we like to play, you need players in the number eight positions who can score.

“To a man, everyone played really well, and they had to do.

“It is a good achievement because it is not easy to go that many games unbeaten,” he continued on the club’s turnaround in form.

“Every team you play against is so strong, so we are delighted with that.

“I said to the lads in there that we have had a really good training week and we can see signs that we are getting better and the messages are becoming clearer as we add more detail.

“Next week will be the same, we can’t take our foot off the gas, we are nowhere near the finished article, far from it, we have to get back and work really hard next week to put a gameplan together to beat Birmingham.

“The challenge now is can we go again and make it eight.”
