Ross Stewart shirt set on fire by fan with Sunderland player linked with a move to Southampton

A shirt with the name of Ross Stewart was set on fire by a fan with the Sunderland player linked with a move to Southampton.

The video surfaced on social media site Twitter on Transfer Deadline Day, but was quickly deleted, but eagle-eyed users soon put it back online as a reminder of the fan’s actions.

It didn’t take long for the video to do the rounds with it getting thousands of likes as specualtion rumbled on regarding if the player was indeed going to sign…

On the 30th of August, Keith Downie wrote: “Southampton have launched a bid to sign Ross Stewart from Sunderland. Southampton had a bid of £4m plus add-ons turned down yesterday, and have now gone in with improved offer of £6m +£1.5m. Awaiting response from #SAFC. Striker Stewart is open to the move. His deal is up next summer.

He added: “Sunderland have accepted a bid from Southampton for Ross Stewart 🤝 Understand the agreement is £8m + £2m add-ons. The striker is travelling to the South Coast for a medical 🩺 The 27-year-old’s contract was up next summer & he wasn’t signing a new one #SAFC #Saints”

Then on Deadline Day: “Ross Stewart has completed his Southampton medical and is putting the finishing touches to his move from Sunderland #SAFC #SaintsFC 🔴⚪️

“Got a lot of people asking if Ross Stewart’s move to Southampton has collapsed. I’ve had nothing to say that there is an issue with that, but instead perhaps an issue with Che Adams’ potential departure. Let’s wait & see, but everything okay that I’m aware of #SAFC”

His signing was soon confirmed by the Saints, who said: “Southampton Football Club is delighted to confirm it has completed the signing of striker Ross Stewart from Sunderland.

“The 27-year-old Scotland international has agreed a contract that runs until 2026 at St Mary’s, becoming the second arrival on transfer deadline day, following Taylor Harwood-Bellis’s loan move from Manchester City.

“Stewart joins Saints after a prolific spell at Sunderland, where he scored 40 goals in 81 appearances after signing for the Black Cats in January 2021 from Ross County.

“The forward, who is currently approaching a return to fitness having been sidelined this year with an Achilles injury, has been capped twice for Scotland and becomes the eighth addition of the summer to Russell Martin’s Men’s First Team.”

Director of Football Jason Wilcox said: “Ross is a really dynamic and intelligent player, so we’re delighted to have added him to the group.

“His form and development over the past couple of seasons have been very impressive, and we’re confident this will be a great place for him to continue that.

“He’s got a fantastic work-rate and he’s a great character too, so we believe he’ll be a really popular addition and an excellent fit for us.”

Ross Stewart said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been a really long day, but it’s been really good too. In the end, I’m delighted to get everything done in time and I can move forward now.

“Southampton is a massive club. In recent years it’s been a Premier League club and for me it’s a great challenge to come down here and play football for a team that’s going to be competing at the top of the league.”

In the 80 appearances that he has made for Sunderland, he scored 40 goals and produced 8 assists.

He arrived at the Black Cats on the 31st of January 2021 Stewart and scored on his Sunderland debut after coming on as a substitute against Accrington Stanley in a 2–0 away win in March 2021, before earning the nickname ‘Loch Ness Drogba’ by Sunderland supporters in reference to his Scottish heritage and comparisons with ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba

On the 21st of May 2022, Stewart netted the second goal in the 2022 EFL League One play-off final as Sunderland defeated Wycombe Wanderers 2–0 to gain promotion back to the Championship.

He finished the season as the league’s joint top goalscorer with 26 goals and was later voted the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for League One.

Stewart struggled with injuries for the 2022/23 season, but still netted 11 times in 15 appearances for Sunderland in all competition, with Sunderland going on to finish in the Championship playoffs, but his side lost to Luton in the semi final.

Here’s what Twitter users said as a Ross Stewart shirt is set on fire by a fan with the Sunderland player linked with a move to Southampton…

@davebutter: I hope the Southampton media lot use this clip and out the flames comes Stewart holding a Southampton shirt

@ChrisBessex: If you’re going to bother with all that why wouldn’t you at least make it cinematic and flick a cigar over your shoulder on to it?

@TheMokPope: That was daft. He could have just swapped the sunderland badge for a Southampton one and it’d still be good

@alanparkins74: Saying it’s a mag, to save face shameless, can tell it’s a mackem that’s his kitchen floor.

@85Gilds: I love how he puts the tissue down to get it alight after putting flammable liquid all over it, special kind of weapon.

@AaronBailey92: What a waste of their own money

@Philip_RJ89: At least he had the savvy to blot a little bit of the flammable liquid off the shirt before igniting it. This prevents a truly raging inferno and stops the arsonist from being engulfed as part of his little protest. Smart thinking 👏🏻

@CarlRob54498714: A grown fucking man, burning a football top on his doorstep and videoing it 😂😂😂

@crapbearddad: Absolute weirdos that do this. You’re burning your clubs shirt!

@DennyBaldwin: The kitchen roll was a nice touch mind

@MrHedgepig1: ANYONE who burns a football shirt needs permanently banning. You aren’t just burning the name on the back but the badge on the front.

@Joshswfc6: ik it’s only a select few but to do this and disrespect the 2 lads that revitalised your club and got u up through the play offs with us and wycombe this is shocking. be no where without stuart and roberts #swfc #SFC

@HH0762: Least they had some good kitchen roll. Strong stuff that.

@Davidpeas71: Fkn Fewmin they are 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@JamieG006: Wouldn’t see any NUFC fans doing this about one of our players 🖤🤍

@docDoherty78: Grown ass men doing this is fucking hilarious hahahahahahahaha christ

@lapdrfc88: Hasn’t he heard the deals fell through 🤣

@Harrylillywhit3: wait til he finds out we aren’t signing him now

@bullnorton: Currently trying to get it to unburn 😂😂😂

@millsmick: What a clown 🤡, it’s only football,it’s not the end of the world players come and go that’s life 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@shiregreenboy: He could have given that away the spiteful sod
