Ross County quickly appoint a new manager following Saturday sacking

Ross County quickly appoint a new manager following the sacking of Stuart Kettlewell which was made on Saturday afternoon.

The Staggies were on the end of a 2-0 defeat against Hamilton which left them four points adrift at the bottom of the table after their defeat at home to relegation rivals.

A club statement read: “Ross County FC can confirm that Stuart Kettlewell has been relieved of his duties as Manager.

“Stuart was an ideal appointment for the club given his history and association with the club and we will support Stuart in the coming weeks.”

Kettlewell came in to replace Owen Coyle in a co-manager role with Steve Ferguson in March 2018.

The former Ross County player was then given full control in the summer after Ferguson moved upstairs to take up the role as chief executive.

His side ended Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football with a shock 2-0 Betfred Cup win at Parkhead in November, which caused protests outside Celtic Park.

Time on Kettlewell’s spell however ended with a miserable league form after just three wins from 18 matches this season.

Owner Roy MacGregor has decided to axe him just a week before Christmas with Ross County in serious danger of relegation.

Kettlewell broke the news to the media after being informed of the news immediately post-match.

He said: “I have been relieved of my duties. That is the situation.

“Everybody knows I’ve got a brilliant relationship with the chairman, with the football club and everybody here – the cleaners, kit woman, groundsman, everybody.

“It’s a sore one, of course it is.

“I want to fight, scrap and do the best I possibly can for the football club. I have done that for a long time.

“We find ourselves bottom of the table and cut adrift a little bit off the back of this result.

“I understand football. There is no ill feeling from me towards the football club or to the chairman.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity. There have been a lot of high points, of course there have, but that’s for speaking about another day.

“It’s a bad day for me personally, and for the football club. I genuinely wish every success to the football club moving forward.

“Hopefully somebody can get a tune out of this group of players to get into a situation where we are not sitting at the foot of the table.”

Ross County FC can today announce the appointment of John Hughes as the clubs new Manager. John is a well-distinguished and well-known figure within the game and has very valuable experience in the Scottish Premiership.

John will retain the services of the current coaching team.

The former Falkirk, Hibernian and Inverness manager has been handed the task of guiding the struggling Staggies to Premiership safety.

Hughes guided Caley Thistle to Scottish Cup triumph in 2015 and is seen as the ideal man to lift dressing room spirits and mastermind a revival in fortunes.

He could be offered the job longer-term, if successful, so time really will tell to see how he gets on.

County stated they had no desire to take a manager currently in employment out of his position for what is seen as a short-term challenge.

Fans reacted after seeing that Ross County quickly appoint a new manager following Saturday’s sacking…

@PhilNicholson2: So you sack the guy who won development league with no players, got the seniors promoted into prem and kept them up, and have replaced him with a guy who got Raith Rovers relegated out of championship. Strange!

@Scallysays: My condolences

@spamfritters65: The big man is back! He better not haunt us!

@RobbiesPark1994: Is it the 1st of April already?

@Craigsemple69: What a lazy appointment that is…… FFS

@MeganDobbie5: Championship next season for use

@GordonT50400421: Happy with John Hughes. Great guy and has a very good record in management too apart from the short stint at Raith. His teams play football the way it should be played too

@andy_caldwell1: That’s 12th place sorted then

@linktonian: Just when you thought 2020 couldnt get any worse. Sympathy to all Staggies fans

@suddy72: I think that’s a good appointment for RC. Yogi always comes across as a good guy. The story about him signing for Celtic is a belter! I want his agent

@knowledgeisall: Ah, the man who blamed “modern society” for the Raith Rovers side he managed being relegated.

@paulkeay: Good luck Yogi, top man, top manager and a really good appointment for County I reckon. Was gutted when he was shafted at Hartlepool. We’d have been in better hands if he’d been allowed to stay.

@Paul_Coull: Absolute fantastic appointment that is. Well done County

@DauvitX: Not entirely convinced. Then again, I thought Owen Coyle was a good appointment…

@SMcClay29: Yaaassss!! Big man needs to be back in the game

@JamesBalnakyle: Ridiculous! That’s fair going to help!!

@angie647: Wouldn’t have been my first choice! Hope he can pick the team up and get them playing! January transfer window will be massive
