Robbie Savage breaks up fans fighting at Macclesfield’s sold out game vs Congleton

Robbie Savage breaks up fans fighting at Macclesfield’s sold out game vs Congleton Town with footage uploaded on Monday afternoon.

Social media footage taken from The Leasing.com Stadium in Macclesfield shows supporters clashing during this afternoon’s North West Counties League clash.

Images from the ground also show yellow smoke bombs being let off shortly before kick off, an early indicator of the trouble that played out.

Videos doing the rounds online shows players attempting to address the crowd following Congleton’s 1-0 loss to their local rivals.

It was the first time the two sides had clashed since Macclesfield Football Club was established in 2020 following its predecessor getting expelled from the National League.

One spectator said: “At first supporters were just throwing cans, and there were smoke bombs about 20 minutes before kick off.

“Then they all just kind of rushed each other.”

3,502 supporters were in attendance, however there was reportedly no segregation, very small amount of police presence, and stewards who didn’t do their job.

Twitter users gave their reaction as Robbie Savage breaks up fans fighting at Macclesfield’s sold out non league game…

@Richard66355510: I’ve been going to watch Macc since 1987 and I’ve never seen such disgraceful scenes. Who’s decision was in NOT to segregate today? Where was the police presence? Very naive of the club not to expect that there would be some mindless idiots out to cause trouble today.

@LukeHOAFC: Unacceptable behaviour Macclesfield. My mums families from there. Disgusting

@JoeyRidings: Sorry @RobbieSavage8 but thats not really what I want my 7 year old to be witness too every week. Season tickets near the away end. Had to leave early!

@Ethan641: be the last time the council let them increase capacity surely? should’ve segregated them and policed it better

@postedbycallum: Macclesfield and Congleton, what a rivalry, this was always gonna get messy

@RomeorMandalay2: Nature really is healing

@WakeEngland: I was really disappointed having to watch this today. Totally ruined the game

@lfc_lloyd: Football is back.

@TacticalReds_: This is how it should be.

@Adobson1417: The UK is healing

@PaulMotto: Stewards leaving well alone

@GeorgeHogg93: Macclesfield fans. Who’s causing the trouble here? This is disgraceful. This is why some fans are put off going because a group of teenagers think it’s ok to fight in a football stadium. It is NOT ok

@MichaelGeal94: Proper good stewarding.

@Georgeleek: Comical from you and your stewards watching the fans brawl, why didn’t you segregate fans. It was always going to kick off when you’ve got a local derby and you can drink on the terraces.

ON FACEBOOK:

Paul Beech: Well nothing to be proud of there. Came across rather embarrassing. Back down to limited crowds & a fine probably? 🙄

Trevor Stokes: I’m 54 so obviously don’t get involved in football hooliganism but it goes on and it goes on in most grounds at most levels. I bring Harry up to be a lad have fun be loud be proud and yes have the banter but never get involved in violence. From what I’ve seen on film and been told some Macc fans on here and on FB are giving the young Macc lads stick when it’s not earned. What would I do if some opposing fan chucked a bottle at me or my son, or punched me or him in the Face id defend myself otherwise I’m at the very least going to hospital. Don’t turn on these lads and become self righteous until you have looked at the films and listened to those involved. Some people have gone after the Macc Lads on here and not even mentioned the Congleton/Port Vale lads well I can tell you my car was spat on by a Congleton/Port Vale Fan coming down London Road and that was in the presence of police, they saw Harry sat in passenger seat in his Macc shirt beckoned us out and spat on the window. Nice they didn’t come for a fight did they? I hate violence but anyone with any sense would defend themselves in situations like today including 54 year old has been’s. Well done the two Robbies but time to rethink segregation for everyone’s safety and for the good of the club, bad ideas can easily be put right. BTW the evidence should stare you all in the face who is the one team we always have problems with violence,pubs in Macc actually close their doors when we are playing them? YES Port Vale and the fans who spat on us were singing Vale songs or at least according to Harry.

Finley Brown: Clubs fault! Shouldn’t be letting fans mix with a crowd like that, it was always going to happen

Gemma Shepherd-Etchells: My daughter loves going to support her local club. She has been wearing her shirt from as soon as she woke up this morning, she even has a lucky bracelet she has to wear to every game, reads every programme from cover to cover and today she asked to leave the game early as she was so upset with the fighting. She left in tears and this is not what Robbie Savage and Robert Smethurst have worked so hard to provide. I sincerely hope that swift action is taken against those few who were spoiling things for the loyal fan base both young and old. I am currently trying to persuade her that they should not deter her from going again, they are the minority. Shame on them. Perhaps they would like to explain to a 7 year old why they acted as they did?!

James Wilson: People are quick to have a go and blame macc fans on here so they can get a few likes on there post. But what do you expect Macc fans to do when they’re throwing glass bottles/ cans and stewards are stood there watching/ laughing.
