It has been announced tonight that Derby County have sacked player Richard Keogh for gross misconduct following his involvement in a drink-driving incident by Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett in September.
The 33 year old defender was told today he had to accept a new contract with the club but he had to take a wage cut if he wanted to remain at Pride Park.
His contract wasn’t set to end until 2021 and he had appeared in eight Championship games for Phillip Cocu’s side so far this season.
Keogh, who can appeal the decision, made 356 appearances for the Rams after joining from Coventry in 2012.
A statement from the club read: “Derby County Football Club has completed the disciplinary hearing regarding Richard Keogh in respect of his involvement in the events of Tuesday, September 24.
“As a result of that process, Mr Keogh has had his contract terminated with immediate effect for gross misconduct. He has the right of appeal within 14 days.
“As we have said from the outset, the club will not tolerate any of its players or staff behaving in a manner which puts themselves, their colleagues, and members of the general public at risk of injury or worse, or which brings the club into disrepute.
Fans took to give their reaction to the news, many of those disgusted with the Rams and others understanding why he got the chop – see those tweets on the next page.
