Report names manager who’ll take charge if Ipswich sack their boss

Report names manager who’ll take charge if Ipswich sack their boss Paul Lambert, following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Blackpool.

The Sunday Mirror have claimed that former Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock is waiting in the wings in case Lambert is axed.

Journalist Stuart Watson revealed: “Lambert signed a new five-year deal on New Year’s Day, but it’s understood there are performance-related break clauses in that contract and a general cap on the pay-off required to part company with both the Blues boss and his staff should owner Marcus Evans decide a change is needed in the hot-seat.”

Warnock had his contract terminated by mutual consent earlier this season, and recently spoke out about where he could be heading next.

In an interview on where he will finish his managerial career, he said: “Apparently I have 12 league games to go to get 1,500 and that is really tempting to me/

“I might have to go to League Two or something like that, but why not? It doesn’t bother me what division I am managing in.

“I just think I will go to the end of this season. We are doing quite a bit of renovation at the house in Cornwall and it will be finished at the end of the season.

“So I think Sharon [his wife] will be happy for me to be out of the house for a few weeks!

“People have mentioned things, but I have had no offers yet.

“I would like to do the 12 games if I am honest, I would like to be able to contribute to a club, either saving it or getting it up.

“Arsenal didn’t come in for me, but I was understanding!”

He is Ipswich Town’s preferred choice to succeed Lambert, with the 71-year-old to take charge if the Tractor Boys ‘fail to arrest their alarming slump in form’.

In the meantime, Warnock has featured on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show as he waits until the right opportunity to get back into management, possibly for the last time.

The Suffolk side had been in a League One title race, however they now have slipped to ninth after one win in seven.

Despite that, they are still only five points off the playoffs and ten behind leaders Rotherham United.
