Remembrance minutes silence ruined by fans; Derek McInnes slams disruption from Celtic fans

A minutes silence on Remembrance weekend has by some been ruined by fans; Derek McInnes slams Celtic fans for disruption at Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes was left furious with what happened, aiming his outrage towards Celtic supporters who interrupted the Remembrance Sunday silence, describing their behaviour as ‘awful.’

He criticised a portion of the Hoops fans after the minute’s silence was abruptly ended after only 17 seconds before the Scottish Premiership match on Sunday afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers’ side went on secured a 2-0 victory against a determined Kilmarnock side. This result means Celtic went back to the top of the league table, overtaking Aberdeen on goal difference.

As has been customary across the nation this weekend, a moment of silence was observed prior to the match to pay respect.

However, there were audible boos coming from the away end as Kyle Vassell placed a wreath of poppies at the centre circle.

When the stadium announcer signalled for the start of the silence, a segment of Celtic fans began to sing and chant.

The silence commenced at the referee Nick Walsh’s signal, yet the chanting continued with Sky Sports trying to lower the sound, yet it was still audible enough.

Rather than a full minute of silence, the referee had to intervene by stopping it after 17 seconds.

Sky commentator Ian Crocker issued an apology for the disruption following the incident, and after the game, Derek McInnes, who was already frustrated with certain decisions made during the match and was further incensed by the interruption of the silence.

Speaking after the game, McInnes said: “Celtic even decide when the minute’s silence stops.

“I thought it was awful. Awful. Why?

“I’m not going to get into it, I’m not a politician or anything.

“It’s our ground, it’s our minute’s silence.

“I don’t get why we shouldn’t have the wherewithal just to stand and show a bit of respect for one minute.”

It’s not just Celtic fans who made noise during the minutes silence. We unfortunately also had it at some matches in the EFL. It worsens when everyone else tells the individuals to shush.

Twitter users gave their reaction with the Remembrance minutes silence ruined by fans; and Derek McInnes slams Celtic fans’ for disruption…

@bray_gooster: Totally agree with DM here! Im ashamed as a Celtic fan born yards from Park Head but served my country with pride! We should chase this lot out of our club!

@Angark24: 👏 Well done Derek McInnes! Celtic again! Disrespectful, delusional, antisemitic, useless! Their misinformed attitude will only make them ridiculed amongst rest of very proud UK on Remembrance Sunday! I’m not surprised, Brendan Rodgers deserves credit for wearing a poppy!

@hernanfpacheco: well said Derek!

@Official_T4O: Well done Derek on calling Celtic out here. We need more of the same. Good football doesn’t ever excuse scandalous behaviour.

@EClarky97: Unpopular opinion but people shouting others to shut up are just as bad as the ones making the noise in the minutes silence. Actually embarrassing.

@mickyboy909: The fans in the stand let us down for the minutes silence which was fucking embarrassing , thank fuck the players didn’t let us down on the pitch . #pufc 😡😡💙😄😄

@_chris96bcfc: The amount of people who feel the need to shout ‘shut the fuck up’ when there’s an ounce of noise during a minutes silence are a huge embarrassment

@PUFC_ZONE: 99% of the stadium was silent and I hope most of the fanbase don’t accept the idiots who started shouting in it

@Elliot_2008: Every club has idiots. I’m sure 99% of Peterborough fans were abiding it. Same as ours

@Fleetwood_Zach_: Only downside of the game was the unrest during the minutes ‘silence’ and that’s on both sets of fans. Embarrassing both clubs. Hopefully never happens again. #pufc

@brandonjjoneill: I’ll give one thing to the Northampton fans, best away lot I’ve seen down the blues in years bar that eejit during the minutes silence

@DaiYonggeout: Put the idiots on the front line that’ll teach them. Always a minority that kills it for the majority.

@Iest_ntfc: More noise was made by everyone else telling them to shut up… And that included Birmingham fans.

@Armson1Simon: Always one dick head though isn’t there! 99.9% of us thoroughly enjoyed our day and respected you lot and our veterans and heroes. Fair play to @BCFC filling your stadium in L1. Best and loudest atmosphere I have ever seen in the league. Good luck and thanks for a great day!

@Beth_Williams97: People who shout “shut up” during a minute silence are just as worse as the people who were originally making the noise.
