Referee makes embarrassing blunder forcing Tottenham players to intervene vs Frankfurt

Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande makes a rather embarrassing blunder forcing Tottenham players to intervene in the game vs Frankfurt.

Spurs stars were forced to remind the referee to brandish a red card for Tuta after the Eintracht Frankfurt defender was shown a second yellow card.

The Brazilian was booked twice for fouls on Heung-min Son in the Champions League group stage clash on Wednesday night โ€“ which ended 3-2 to the Premier League side.

However, Spanish official Carlos del Cerro Grande forgot to send the Frankfurt right-back off after his second booking having initially left both sets of players baffled.

Tottenham players surrounded the referee to remind him of the first offence โ€“ which occurred just four minutes earlier.

Eventually, after an unexplained delay, the referee then took to dismiss Tuta and reduce Frankfurt to ten men.

Tuta cynically took Son down again, grabbing his shirt and pulling him to the ground, waved a second yellow, but failed to show the red.

Spurs players Rodrigo Bentancur and Emerson Royal were seen telling and using their fingers, telling him Tuta had already been booked just moments earlier.

After a lengthy period of waiting, the ref then eventually pulled out the red card to give the Frankfurt man his marching orders.

Spurs hung on for 3-2 home win over 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt; Heung-Min Son’s double and Harry Kane’s penalty put them 3-1 up; despite the red card, Frankfurt set up nervy finale after Faride Alidou’s late goal; Kane missed injury-time penalty to make the win safe

Spurs boss Antonio Conte speaking to BT Sport:

“We could have scored many, many goals. Instead, until the end we suffered. For sure, we have to try to learn about this situation and understand the game is never ended.

“But an important win for us. We started in a difficult way but a good reaction, we scored three goals, we had many chances to improve – good saves from their goalkeeper – and in the end we’re leading our group.

“And in the next game against Sporting Lisbon we have to try to get three points to go through to the next round.

“We used the first game [against Frankfurt] to improve and understand how to hurt them. We played a good game, we created many chances and we have to continue in this way.

“At the same time we have to understand, to learn about this game that until the end we have to stay focused.

“It was a disaster if we drew a game like this.”

Spurs hero Son Heung-min to BT Sport: “The last five minutes were really tough. In the Champions League you never know what will happen. It was uncomfortable sitting on the bench and watching. The most important thing was the three points.”

On his link-up with Harry Kane: “We just understand each other really well. I know what he likes to do and he’s the same. The relationship, it’s always hard work and good effort. It’s always been a pay-off for hard work. Many more to come I hope.

“It’s our home and we don’t want to go 1-0 down. A team mistake. In football there’s always mistakes. We bounced back. At half-time 3-1 really good performance and result. In the second half we needed to score more to finish the game.”

On his second goal: “When the ball came to me, Pierre saw me before crossing. The ball was just really clear to me and there was only one option to take the volley. I hit it really clean. I was very happy.

“It was a really important win. Positive things but always room for improvement. We have to improve because we have a massive game at the weekend.

“There’s still two games to play. We have to go again. Two tough games, we need to prepare more than the other teams.”

Here’s how fans reacted as the referee makes a rather embarrassing blunder forcing Tottenham players to intervene in the game vs Frankfurt…

@Connorisseur19: Letโ€™s take a moment to remember how much of a shambles the ref was last night, booked Tuta twice and didnโ€™t realise until told, Hasebe already booked and made 2 yellow card tackles, no red, foul on Gil, DOGSO with no attempt to play the ball, yellow given, absolute shambles ๐Ÿ˜‚

@bioniclilz: as if the ref just had to be reminded tuta was already on a yellow ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ forgot to get the red card out ahahahah

@bruceives: This ref has got some big calls wrong tonight #thfc #coys

@JarretSander: Yep refs been shocking.

@rw_thfc97: Refs clearly blind? Only explanation for this stinker of a performance

@xAlexTHFC: Ref gets worse every ucl matchday, where do they find these people? Better off getting a drunk bloke from the crowd

@Cfrank32: Thank God Refs have to write down who receives Yellow cards. That’s embarrassing for that Ref when all #Spurs players have to tell him its his 2nd yellow, and is supposed to get a Red Card! If he forgot to write it, he could have played and gotten 3 or 4 yellow cards!!๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ

@sam_bishop: Third game in a row weโ€™ve had a really poor ref. Fingers crossed for better on Saturday #COYS #spurs #UCL

@SpursITKhub: The ref forgot that he had already been booked hadnโ€™t he? ๐Ÿ˜‚ glad we reminded him

@Nathanp112: The ref laughed at Emerson for saying he’s already been booked. What a doughnut ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
