There was uproar in midweek over a red card in a 8th tier playoff semi final at Dunston with opponents Pontefract furious at the decision.
The Northern Premier League East Division fixture was marred by the controversial incident, with Dunston going on to beat Pontefract 2-0 and book a place in the playoff final with Stockton Town
@PonteCollsFC tweeted at the time of the incident: “I’m sorry but that is absolutely disgusting, the referee sends Jack Vann off for being tackled late and above the ball! That is horrendous… [0-0]”
Dunston UTS FC wrote: RED CARD! 🟥 As usual Pontefract get dirty, and it’s a horror challenge from Jack Vann who comes in incredibly late on Maskell, and the referee has no choice but to send him for an early bath.
Then at half time, @PonteCollsFC said: “I’m not sure I can put that half into words, a decision has ruined a tie leaving us with an uphill task. We have had a couple of chances on the break.”
Dunston wrote earlier in the second half: “A member of the Pontefract management team has been sent off as the teams walked off the pitch for half-time. 🟥 We believe it’s manager Craig Rouse but not 100% sure.”
Pontefract manager Craig Rouse tweeted: “4 minutes into a play off semi final and the referee brandishes a red card to our player (in yellow) for getting to the ball 1st.
“Clear to see there lad leaves the ground and arrives a yard late (don’t think that’s a red either btw)
“38 games of hard work for that @PonteCollsFC.”
Connor Smythe said: “Incredibly frustrating end to our league season. A game which should have been decided on footballing terms, was ruined by a decision by the referee in the first five minutes. Thank you to the supporters who travelled up tonight. We will move on to the cup final on Monday now.”
Pontefract added: “FT | PROUD. Everything thrown against us tonight and they still gave their all. A game ruined early doors, but fair play to @DunstonUTSFC and we wish them well in the final! It will sting this, hard to not to feel hard done by. But the team and our fans have done us proud again!”

Are you having a laugh?!

Fair point that’s valid. Think the reaction of both teams to the initial decision is one of suprise.
Direction of the ball and the still picture shows who got there 1st but he doesn’t have the benefit of that at the time.

The game has certainly changed no arguing that.
If you watch the Dunston players initially they believe the foul is to us.— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
There was an assistant and a fourth official within 20 yards of the challenge, with the same view (at ground level) as the VEO. Surely he communicates to them to get an idea of what happened.
Regardless of the view of the ref. He can’t have seen our player to be wreckless anyhow.— Pontefract Collieries Football & Education (@PontefractColl3) May 1, 2024
I understand your observations; I didn’t see a red card worthy challenge myself, however, my only thought is that perhaps the ref saw something from his vantage point that made his mind up for him. He must have, or thought he had, seen something to make that call.

100% percent, spoken from someone who understands the game and the consequences of tackling. Genuinely believe if our lad rolls about he sends there lad off
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
Nobody would have batted an eyelid if he’d waved play on mate, just 2 lads committed to the ball.
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
Watch again. The Dunston player pulls his leg into him. Obvious bias looking at your response. Btw the red was for excessive force in the tackle not anything after.
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
Totally agree
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
Sadly you are right. Whoever rolls around gets it the majority of the time these days.
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
People like yourself who’ve played the game understand the art of tackling mate.
2 committed lads with eyes on the ball for me
— Craig Rouse (@CraigRouse1) May 1, 2024
There wouldn’t have been 1 single complaint from anyone if that had happened. Would have been expected….

This is the reaction online regarding the red card uproar in the 8th tier playoff semi final at Dunston with Pontefract left furious at the decision…
@stevecamm31: Red is valid mate, it’s your right leg follow through if I’m honest. Some players know what they’re doing and I’m not sure if you’re one of those but I can see why you got it.
@rjbrook76: 2 committed players in a big match that’s all, sadly refs don’t let big 50/50’s go anymore, if both players stop down or both get up then no red is issued
@DeekMc1980: That’s a disgraceful red card to receive! Both players fully committed, it’s very harsh to punish one player. The sad truth is the player in the blue made up the refs mind by rolling around
@edwardsa61: Sadly you’re not allowed to tackle these days, understand the need to protect players from injury but the game has gone soft. If anything it’s a foul by blue. Ref’s been swayed by who got hurt most.
@marsh9382: Absolute joke that pal – I’ve taken folk out knee out and just had a talking to! 50/50 fair challenge not even a foul in my eyes! Football is becoming a fairies game
@bass_loser: Both guys have eyes on the ball, think the guy in blue is always going to be late but throws himself into it and the guy in yellow is quicker and stronger to the ball at a different angle. Both/either/none could have been hurt. Similar force, neither excessive.
@scott_gaunt: He’s given that purely on over reaction from player and fans. Its where the game now is, everyone trying to influence/gain advantage by being vocal and in some instances lying/cheating. He did right thing in giving himself a bit of time but unfortunately got it wrong. Shame that.
@tuckerpoole: Wow ridiculous decision 🤦🏼♂️
@jimmy2002_uk: Outrageous decision not even a foul good old 50/50
@BenSmudger84: Good honest tackle from both
@simon284: Can’t help but feel for you and the lads mate! That’s a disgraceful decision!! Especially with magnitude of game/ so early on. Question of integrity with NE officials once again 🙄
@DannySouth1: Great tackle. All the hard work this season for a ref to ruin it. Hard lines mate don’t want to sound patronising but still a very good season just a shame it’s ruined
@RJPatt8: Wow, assuming he’s never played the game then…? No doubt he’ll be promoted next year! 🙃
@DannyCharlotte4: Absolute joke of a red card !!!! Can clearly see he’s got the ball first. If Jack rolls around after the tackle then it’s a different story.
@dazzmorley: Decent challenge all round, play on!!! Joke decision.
@adswebbo: Not even sure any of its worth a yellow…
@nwolf1986: Not a red card went on players and crowd reaction
@HyettRobbie: Not even a foul never mind a red 😱
@jonnyraine1988: Shocker that. No wonder they get stick.
@floorcracker: What a joke! 😤
@KaceyJohnstone1: Great tackle that!
