Racist abuse sent to Wesley Fofana following Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal

Racist abuse were sent to Wesley Fofana following Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea are contacting Wesley Fofana immediately after it emerged that the 24 year old defender has been racially abused on Instagram.

Fofana uploaded a number of screenshots of abusive messages he received after playing in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at Arsenal yesterday.

The Blues will work with the relevant authorities to make sure those responsible are held accountable and will issue a statement this afternoon.

CHELSEA STATEMENT:

Chelsea Football Club is appalled and disgusted by the recent rise in online racial abuse towards our players.

The abuse Wes Fofana has been subjected to following yesterday’s fixture is abhorrent and will not be tolerated.

Wes and all our players have our full support. We will work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators and take the strongest possible action.

Arsenal edged past Chelsea 1-0 in a feisty London derby with Mikel Merino’s first-half header from a corner proved to be the difference.

Wesley Fofana was ‘very fortunate’ to avoid a red card against Arsenal after a ‘deliberate stamp’ on Declan Rice.

Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett said to Football Insider that the 24-year-old should not have been allowed to “get away with” a challenge like the one he made.

“Fofana of Chelsea can count himself very fortunate he didn’t receive a red card for his deliberate stamp on the Arsenal player.

“Even if they took the view that it was not a red card, there has to be a sanction.

“The player cannot get away with a challenge of this type.”

Fans meanwhile said the following:

“Fofana has no business still being on that football pitch. That’s 2 clear bookable offences, one a red the other an orange-level challenge.”

“VAR check for Fofana red card. Ref conclusion = not even a yellow lol how does that make sense.”

“Another studs up challenge by Fofana who didn’t get the ball…. No yellow.”

“How is Fofana still on the pitch without a booking. 2 borderline red challenges.”

“Fofana not a single yellow card for 2 red card offences btw”

“2 questionable red card challenges by Fofana now. Nothing given. Not even a yellow.”

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca:

“What I can say between the first leg against Arsenal and today’s game is: I don’t see a big difference between us and them. This means, since I arrived, I have a feeling we are in the right path. And we are very close.

“That means we need just that step forward to compete in these kind of games, but this step can also come from finishing in the top four of five Champions League spot, where you can grow in that competition.

“It’s a huge difference if you think that the three players with the most goals for Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, none of them were on the pitch today, two of them are long-term already out.

“It’s normal that offensively we can struggle a little bit, even if until today we are the second or third best attacks in the league. That means we are in any case doing well without those players. But we could do better without the injured players.

“They don’t concede many goals. They are the first or the second one, so it’s not easy to create chances against them.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta:

“We continue to do a lot of things defensively so well that earn us the right to attack open spaces but there were so many situations, huge advantages that we just gave away.

“So we have to track back 70 metres and on that face, we were one of the best teams in the world today because we were unbelievable in the way we’ve done it. We haven’t conceded almost [anything] apart from the strange save from David. Because in my opinion they’re the best attacking team in the league.

“By a mile. The stats say it, everything I’ve seen says it in open play. They can open you, they can run in transitions, they have individual quality, any player in the defensive line can threaten in side. They can combine on both sides, their weaker sides, they are missing some big players at the moment.

Are Chelsea going to be a threat next season? “Yeah. I think if they didn’t have to play Thursday-Saturday and the amount of injuries they have as well, the would be on the edge. Because the manager they have is really good and the players and the squad, the quality they have.”

Twitter users reacted after a number of racist abuse sent to Wesley Fofana following Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal…
