Protest banners and Union Jack flags were put on display outside Gary Neville’s hotel and Salford City after his video admission.
Gary Neville continues to face backlash this week, labelling him a “traitor” after he criticised the negative use of Union Jack flags in a LinkedIn video.
Fans protested outside his Hotel Football near Old Trafford and Salford City’s Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday evening, displaying a banner calling him “traitor scum” before the EFL Trophy game against Stockport County.
The protests were also fuelled by construction workers at Neville’s £400 million St Michael’s redevelopment site in Manchester, where he ordered a Union Jack flag to be removed.

This is funny. Manchester answers @GNev2 – have some British flags outside your hotel mate. Brilliant… pic.twitter.com/3LK8al8RvT

Neville said in his LinkedIn video post: “So I’ve just left my house and walking into the office, waking up obviously, seeing the news last night and the news this morning dominated by the horrific attacks within the Jewish community just about a mile from here. I was driving to Salford City last night, going down Littleton Road, seeing 60, probably 50 or 60 Union Jack flags.
“And on the way back I went down the parallel road which has got the Jewish community right at its heart and they’re out on the streets defiant, not hiding or in fear. I just kept thinking as I was driving home last night that we’re all being turned on each other and the division that’s being created is absolutely disgusting.
“Mainly created by angry middle-aged white men who know exactly what they’re doing. Funnily enough, on one of my development sites last week, there was a Union Jack flag put up and I took it down instantly. And some people might be watching this and thinking, well, Gary, you’re not very patriotic. I played my country 85 times. I love my country. I love Manchester and I love England. But I’ve been building in this city for 15, 20 years and there’s no one put a Union Jack flag up in the last 15 to 20 years, so why do you need to put one up now?
“It’s quite clearly sending a message to everybody that there is something you don’t like. The Union Jack flag being used in a negative fashion is not right. And I’m a proud supporter of England, of Great Britain, of our country, and we’re championing it anywhere in the world. It’s been one of the greatest places to live.
“But I think we need to check ourselves. We need to check ourselves and sort of start to think about, bring ourselves back to a neutral point. Because we’re being pulled right and left. We don’t need to be pulled right and left at all. I’ve always said this about, I played in a football team with a group of people from Manchester, a group of people from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, but also people from Africa, people from Asia, people from America, people from Europe, and we were a beautiful team, united as one.
“Brexit has had a devastating impact on this country, and the messaging is getting dangerous, extremely dangerous. All these idiots that are out there spreading hate speech in any form, and abuse in any form, we must stop promoting them. We must stop elevating our voices towards them. It needs to stop now and get back to a country of love, of peace, of harmony and become a team again.”
⚠️OUR RESPONSE TO GARY NEVILLE!!
Salford lads done us proud tonight 💪🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 pic.twitter.com/wmMHD2Gjcc

Ashlea Simon, a co-Leader of Britain First, said in a video message: “So I just got home after spending a long evening out with the Salford lads who happened to be a bunch of middle-aged men that loved to fly their flag and we went out tonight because we wanted to fly our flag proudly and send a message to Gary Neville because Gary Neville this week decided to blame white working-class middle-aged men for a terror attack on a synagogue despite the fact the terrorist was from Syria and his name was Jihad.
“But somehow for leftists like Gary Neville, that means white people are responsible, white men are responsible because they fly their flag proudly.
“So tonight the Salford lads, they took a massive banner saying ‘traitor scum’ to Gary Neville’s hotel and Salford FC and they flagged all the surrounding areas because our flag is our pride, our flag is our joy. It means so much to the people of this country. It means more than a flag. It’s the blood, sweat and tears that have gone in to preserving these lands for us. Do you know, it means so much more.
“And for the likes of Gary Neville, a horrible, horrible leftist to say he’s tearing down flags when he sees them is absolutely disgusting.
“Not only have you blamed white middle-aged men for a terror attack, but you’re saying you’re down flags that people have died for. So we went there tonight, we flagged the entire places, we sent a message to Gary Neville that this is our country, we’re proud of it and we’ll fly our flags when we want to.
“And if you want to take these flags down, that’s fine. We’ll keep on coming back, keep on flying the flag even more because the flag to us means so much more than you can ever imagine because you’re a horrible leftist that just doesn’t understand.
“You don’t love your country, you don’t love your people, whereas we do. And this is Salford, it’s our city and we’ll fly our flag when we want to.”
Salford FC game right now.
