Preston defender baffled at Jamilu Collins escaping red card for headbutt on Ched Evans

Preston defender Liam Lindsay was rather baffled at Cardiff’s Jamilu Collins escaping a red card for headbutting Ched Evans.

Footage has since come to light showing the first half incident, with Jamilu Collins not being punishment, referee Robert Madley dishing a yellow card out to both parties, with Lilywhites winger Robbie Brady also on the receiving end of a booking for getting involved in the scuffle that had followed afterwards.

Brady was later sent off, having picked up a second yellow on the 52nd minute, but Liam Lindsay thought his Cardiff should have gone down to ten men.

He said on the headbutt incident, as per Lancashire Post: “He’s pushed his head into him and if that’s in the Premier League, it is a red card. I think, if Ched does that to someone else it’s red card. I didn’t even know (Robbie Brady) had a yellow. I don’t know what happened. It is what it is.”

The game itself saw Cardiff go from 1-0 down going into injury time before equalising on 96 and then getting a 99th minute winner.

Milutin Osmajić had put the hosts ahead on the 48th minute goal, but Karlan Grant and Ike Ugbo netted to earn a surprise stoppage-time comeback win for the Bluebirds.

The result means that Preston are 6th in the Championship table with 28 points from 17 games, while Cardiff are a point and place below them just outside the playoff places.

Preston boss Ryan Lowe said: “I’m massively disappointed, but I can’t fault their effort.

“They were on the floor in there. We’ve had to pick them up. We’ll be in tomorrow to recover and do everything we need to do.

“It’s cruel, isn’t it? We’d have taken a draw because when they put that much pressure on you we need to find a solution to stay in the game and keep doing the right things.

“Our lads were dead on their feet, shattered. They were down to ten men, played more or less 40-odd minutes with ten men which is a killer and then to concede in the 96th and 99th minute is even worse. But I’m proud of the boys.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with their attitude or application. I thought if it stayed 11 men we’d potentially go and win the game comfortably.

“They’re on the floor, but I have to go in as the leader and the manager to pick them up.

“We’re in tomorrow morning, we’ll have a smile on our face, and we’ll debrief the games and the goals with the lads who were involved in it and we’ll keep smiling.

“What these boys are doing for this football club is nothing but terrific, and I think everyone should agree with me on that.

“We’re going to lose games, we’re going to win games, we’re going to draw games.

“There’s no blame culture. Robbie got sent off, there’s no blame from me that it’s Robbie’s fault. Robbie’s held his hand up with it but there’s no blame. We stick together in these moments.

“We’ve won games in the 90th minute – a derby two weeks ago – they’re the good moments. When it happens to you, you take the good with the bad and today we’ve got to take the bad.

“We’re disappointed. Everyone going home is disappointed but we have to pick ourselves up and go again because we’ve got another tough game against Middlesbrough on Tuesday and then another good game at home on Friday against Queens Park Rangers so there’s no time for sulking.”

“It’s really important,” Cardiff’s Erol Bulut said. “The substitutes changed the game for us, but generally, from the first minute until the end of the game, my players showed character.

“It’s not easy to play against ten players. Sometimes you think that the game can change easily, but sometimes it is more difficult. Today, we did everything right when the opponent went down to ten players.

“We kept the ball, we tried to create chances from the sides and we had a lot of shots on goal, so at the end, I think we deserve to get the three points.”

Erol continued: “Iké [Ugbo] didn’t play a few games, but in training, he was always there and he showed that he can be the key player at the end for us, because in the box, he is really good.”

“He [Mark McGuinness] got a kick on his leg and we could see from the side that he couldn’t run very well, so we had to make the substitution. I hope that in three days, he will be ok for us,” Erol concluded.

This is how fans reacted after Preston defender Liam Lindsay expressed being baffled at Jamilu Collins escaping a red card for his headbutt on Ched Evans…

@JakePrice1927: He is very lucky but Ched don’t half make a meal of it. We had a blatant penalty turned down in the first half.

@simo7pne: That’s a red, simple as that.

@Loyndy: Right in front of the 4th official as well 😤

@AlexxGalee: This should’ve got Ched Evans sent off. Yellow for the foul, yellow for throwing himself to the ground – diving. Cardiff also should have had a blatant penalty, and if that’s a red so was the elbow in Goutas’ face.

@ChrisSnow1892: Giving it big spuds and then going down like that is laughable😂

@iansmith115: Ched Evans moves his head first to make contact and misses Jam reacts no head butt just a coming together 50/50 both wrong, good call from Ref IMHO, 2 red cards otherwise

@Will_T_Smith_: from a relatively unbiased perspective, i don’t think i’ve ever seen a team shafted over a period of games by officials as much as preston the last two months

@markmurphyi4c: Add this to the 3 blatant penalties that weren’t awarded and poor refereeing decisions have cost us 10-12 points in the last 2 months. People say these things even out over a season – can’t see that happening! @EFL @FA_PGMOL @fa @pnefc #pnefc

@TomHarrisonLaw: This is not a red card apparently. PNE received two yellow cards for this. The offending player received a yellow. Well done Bobby Madley. You are not fit for purpose. We lost to the referee yesterday. Yes Robbie Brady is a clown but for the love of god look at this. 🤬#pnefc

@KeatonFisher19: All I’m gonna say is that if the roles where reversed. Ched Evans is sent off Cus his name is Ched Evans.

@57Kian: Imagine now when we get our inevitable apology or that idiot gets a retrospective ban but we just have to make do with our 0 points and 16 years of injury time… don’t usually slate the refs but this is becoming a really old joke really fast #pnefc

@GarethLivesey95: It’s right in front of the linesman and fourth official, it really is beyond pathetic! Refs should have to do interviews after the game and explain why he thought he could bend the rules and only give a yellow for this. They do what they want and get away with it every week!

@cityskp: The Preston player made the first movement of his head

@catterallwhite: Thought it was a red card at the time and this video footage proves it. Abysmal officiating. #pnefc

@louise_pne: This is madness! Changes the whole game if they’d been down to 10 men there. Also Brady wouldn’t have got his first yellow, as I’m assuming he got it for being disgusted that wasn’t a red!

@LomaxC: @EFL_Comms run me through the bit in the rule book where this is not a red???

@SavigmaP: Here it is, a blatant penalty we should’ve been given too. Referee was poor for both sides. We didn’t get a player sent off, and you didn’t get punished for a stupid tackle in the box. Stop pretending it’s as black and white as “Cardiff got every decision”.

@scottpne: The @EFL definitely have an agenda Refs have played their part in costing/awarding points at Deepdale this season

@BadlyDrawnNE: How he never got sent off here is baffling #pnefc

@WLBennett: It’s a red despite Chad making a meal of it, 4th official can clearly be seen close and looking at the incident. @efl

@philltea: Any chance @EFL Explain how this is not a red card? Sack that useless wet wipe that was in charge. Ah and the 4th official and liner were Literally 5 yards away. #pnefc

@ChapTowers:
Outrageous. Every club gets a few bad decisions over the course of a season but in the last month terrible refereeing errors have cost our beloved #pnefc a potential 10 points:
Millwall
Southampton
Hull
Cardiff
I hope the club are letting their disappointment known to the EFL.

@Crooky89: Get up Ched ffs

@SD8716: Could have been killed

@dom_33: Fucking hell @EFL sort your refs out ffs
