Preston and Wigan fans ended up being pepper-sprayed by police while Ched Evans goes viral on social media with his late tackle.
Like previous meetings, this was always going to be a heated affair whether it was on or off the pitch, with heavy police presence at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
The two sides played out a goalless draw on the opening weekend of the Championship with Emil Riis and Troy Parrott came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Lilywhites in the first half, but ultimately neither side could find the breakthrough before North End played the final ten minutes with a man disadvantage after Ched Evans saw red.
Preston started brightly in the wet conditions, with the first real opportunity coming from Ben Whiteman, who fizzed a low effort towards goal, and debutant Parrott stuck out a leg, though his touch was wide of goal.
At the other end, Woodman had to be called into action by defender Jack Whatmough’s shot, which went wide, before he then also kept out Tom Naylor’s header.
Brady and Liam Lindsay then combined twice in the space of a few minutes as the away side looked to break the deadlock, however the defender sent a header over the crossbar both times.
Brady was involved again as he played it over the top to Riis, who ran towards goal before hitting the ball across the box, Parrott coming just inches away from meeting it at the far post.
It was the home side who started brightest in the second period, producing a number of crosses and sending them into the Preston penalty area, with Woodman required to keep out Will Keane on 65 minutes.
Parrott then had a chance at the other end on the 71st minute in his last action of the game, being slid through into the area, but he fired across goal and wide.
The visitors were then reduced to ten men on 80 minutes as substitute Evans saw red for a challenge on Tilt, and North End managed the game from that point to make sure they went home with a point.
Well I know what Im taking up once I retire 🕺🏾🕺🏾💙🤍 pic.twitter.com/8AKysJ7oPt

Wigan Athletic line-up: Amos; Darikwa, Whatmough (Kerr, 38), Tilt, Bennett (Pearce, 90); Lang, Power, Naylor, McClean; Magennis (Humphrys, 78), Keane. Subs not used: Jones, McGrath, Shinnie, Aasgaard.
PNE line-up: Woodman; Storey, Lindsay, Hughes; Potts (Woodburn, 66), Whiteman, Browne, Johnson (Ledson, 85), Brady (Fernández, 72); Riis, Parrott (Evans, 72). Subs not used: Cornell, Bauer, McCann.
Preston boss Ryan Lowe was left split on Ched Evans’ straight red card.
Substitute Evans was given his marching orders 10 minutes from time with referee Bobby Madley judging his slide tackle into the body of Curtis Tilt to be worthy of a sending off.
On the red card, Lowe said: “I’ve just looked back at it. Ched is disappointed but they are hard aren’t they, striker’s challenges? I have done that myself and it’s been a stupid tackle, but what I will say is that I’m not sure if we’ll have a look at it because the two of them actually slip before they enter each other.
“Obviously, Tilty has made a good reaction after it – I think that’s the fastest he moved all game to be fair, bless him. He said then coming off that he (Evans) did catch him but he’s obviously made a meal of it, which is fine. The referee has made a decision but I don’t know, I’ll have to have a chat with the ref because Ched loses his back foot, Tilty loses his back foot and then they collide.
“He gets him on the top of his thigh and then Ched’s knee goes towards his chest, but he didn’t actually catch his chest. At first, I didn’t think much of it, until I watched it back. That’s the referee’s decision and we have to respect that, but I thought we were brilliant thereon after.”

Fans reacted as Preston and Wigan fans are pepper-sprayed by police while Ched Evans goes viral with his late tackle on Curtis Tilt…
ON THE TROUBLE:
@margionaltheory: Nothing changes!!
@KevAbbott: GMP’s finest again I see
@MikeCookson1: Bald lad clearly felt that one, copper made him look silly
@sixtysixrick: Right said Fred getting tetchy 👍
@DannyLannon: Play with feathers n all that
@Jill28518669: Same with all clubs, why do they behave like this? Should be a nice environment for kids but they make it horrible. I wish they would keep their beer and coke at home and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves.
@AtTheWheel_FPL: Cocaine, steroids and a bunch of 16 year olds to impress. #WhatALife 🤦
@DavidKe24236510: That hurt him but he’s trying to pretend it didn’t 🤣
@adam_croston: I don’t get why they send both sets of fans in that direction. Does this not happen with most big away ends at the DW?
@jyatesbwfc2810: Grown men 😂😂
@lilraz92: Everyone walks together until you get to the bridge and then as soon as you separate everyone gets hard as nails 🤣
@CalMoxx: Always the way. Never get why gmp force the bottle neck on the bridge… @FairCop_
@StBFCPaul: Everyone has coats on with hoods up. So much for global warming. Its obviously freezing up north.
@Niallrobo25: Proper hard geezers !! Till the mace comes out 🤣
@Lancashiret02: Disgraceful policing, bringing everyone together on a bridge where they know it kicks off everytime. A couple of big brave coppers pepper spraying anyone who was in front of them including women and kids.
@JoshuaTate94: Ah yes, blame the police because adult men can’t go to a football match without wanting to fight each other.
@scottyconnor20: Hahahaha what a fukin set of melons. Going to a game for trouble #getagripp
ON THE TACKLE:
@deb_chap: Bit of break dancing there Curtis!! Glad you’re OK though 😉💙
@bfcmike85: Your lucky you haven’t been forced to retire after that challenge. Disgusting from Evans
@WattyTix: Looked bloody painful that 😦
@ninefor22: I loved this bit in the Wigan v Preston game. Ched Evans gets a straight red for a two-footed challenge and the other bloke ends up doing a 1985 breakdance head spin.
@jtuckerx: Ched Evans is absolutely stupid.
@innyko1: Quote of the day for me was “bring Ched Evans on” he’s suited this game and we need him on and then as soon as he gets sent off, “he’s a liability”, “he’s rubbish” #pnefc football is back!! Love it!!
@baysidepne: An early bath every day of the week, month and year by the way.
@Matthewholden12: Absolute shocker
@DannyLannon: It’s a red but you know what he’s only a split second late, I’d be fuming if my player didn’t go in for that 50/50.
@ajustice00: Tackle turned the lad into a prime George sampson
@mart71mart: Why did the Wigan player feel the need to start doing a breakdance windmill reaction. Made a meal of it and got a player sent off. Absolute fanny
@Wardy369579512: Double footed to the chest btw what would your mind reaction be 😂
@NUFC_BERTIE: Man does the booker T move after being tackled
Tilt of the ‘Rock Steady Crew’ 🤣🤣
Good to see your ok and able to have a laugh about it 💙🤍 pic.twitter.com/jGsfdzBW6e
