Potential new Hull manager gets sent off in final game in Turkey after having bottles thrown at him

Potential new Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic gets sent off in his final game in Turkey after having bottles thrown at him.

Sergej Jakirovic was shown a red card in his final game with Kayserispor after clapping the Samsunspor (home) fans, an act prompted by the opposition fans throwing bottles at him.

This incident came during a match where Jakirovic’s reaction to the fans’ behaviour led to his dismissal, despite the provocation, which is a surprising and controversial decision by the referee, especially considering the context of fan misconduct.

Jakirovic’s side were 1-0 up against Samsunspor, but two late goals in the 95th and 98th minutes resulted in a 2-1 loss.

This secured Samsunspor’s third-place finish and Europa League qualification, while Kayserispor ended 13th.

It comes after just days after reports stated that Sergej Jakirovic has reportedly agreed in principle to become Hull City’s next manager with a £2m per year salary, according to Turkish news agency DHA.

The 48-year-old Bosnian, who previously coached Dinamo Zagreb and other clubs, led Kayserispor out of the relegation zone since joining in January.

Talks are ongoing, with compensation due to Kayserispor as Jakirovic has over a year left on his contract.

He emerged as Hull City owner Acun Ilicali’s top choice to replace Ruben Selles, who was sacked over two weeks ago.

Sergej Jakirovic says he has not yet signed a contract with Hull City and is still in the consideration phase.

Jakirovic, with dual Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia citizenship, had a 20-year playing career before moving into management, where he maintains a near 60% win ratio.

Twitter users reacted as the potential new Hull manager gets sent off in his final game in Turkey after having bottles thrown at him…

@TristarAlpha: How poor is that for a reffing decision. In some jurisdictions there would be life bans for fans chucking stuff at players or managers. In Turkey the victim gets sent off. Mad mad mad. #hcafc

@elsathora: No wonder he’s leaving

@flarey_2: and i thought EFL refs were bad

@PeterTa46426650: come to Hull. You will be appreciated.

@SocialEngland66: With a refereeing decision like that we will no doubt see him in the premier league very soon.

@JChappers94: No wonder Jose is constantly calling this league and these referees out for corruption, sent off for being pelted with bottles is ridiculous 😂

@CraigHCAFC01: Jesus Christ, let’s make sure we show him our support #hcafc

@AdEvo87: Bunch of fucking Neanderthals. Fully grown men acting like children. Embarrassing #hcafc

@OllieHarsley: The sheer amount of sarcasm in Jakirović’s applause to the opposition supporters chucking bottles at him was classy and the best way to deal with brainless meffs. Hope City give him a lifetime contract just for doing that 👌👊 #hcafc

@williamyoung95: Good man. Also, the state of that reffing! Sent off for being hit by water bottles! Even his opposing manager is incredulous. No wonder people like José call the league unbelievably corrupt. #hcafc

@TigerBitez1904: Im already looking forward to little old #hcafc getting back to the business of football. Exciting season ahead with a massive coupe of poaching Sergej Jakirović from a massive club in Turkey. The futures bright, the futures black and amber

@Deesy2002: the biggest and most important thing that Sergej and his staff need to do when they come in is form a close bond with the players, everyone needs to be on the same page from day 1 otherwise we can write the season off already #hcafc

@foreverayellow: that’s turkey football for you, shocking scenes, bizarre refereeing decision to go along with that, hurry up and leave all that behind sergej and get yourself to Hull
