Port Vale fans make their frustrations known in 3-0 defeat to league leaders Stockport

Port Vale fans make their frustrations known in their side’s 3-0 defeat to League One leaders Stockport on Monday night.

The Hatters went ahead after just 12 minutes, Jack Diamond made his way through the defenders but had a shot blocked, he picked it up the ricochet, sent Wootton ahead and the striker fired it into the corner.

On 28 minutes, Stockport went 3-0 up, Jesse Debrah attempted to deal with a long ball encroaching the box but he wasn’t aware that Jack Diamond racing to take possession before he struck it low into the net.

Ruari Paton came close for Vale as the first half neared an end, a free-kick curled beyond the wall but struck the woodwork.

On the 71st minute, Ethan Pye put his leg out and tripped up Devante Cole just outside the box, the Port Vale striker falling as he went inside the box in hope of a penalty shout, the referee gave nothing.

The result means Stockport leapfrog Bradford, Stevenage and Cardiff, but for Darren Moore’s side, they remain in the drop zone, two points off Burton in 20th.

Josh Watton (BBC Radio Manchester commentator): “Boos ring around Vale Park as Stockport leave Staffordshire with three points in the bag.

“They are heading top of the league. The Stockport fans behind the goal are in fine voice.

“With the FA Cup coming up, Stockport will be top for at least two weeks. How often do you think the fans will look at that table?”

Calvin Andrew (Ex-Port Vale forward on BBC Radio Manchester): “Job done. Top of the league.

“Stockport fans will be pretty pleased with that performance. Their team haven’t played out of their skin and they’ve still won 3-0.

“They managed the game very well and worked out how to play against Port Vale early. It worked perfectly.

“They haven’t really been tasked to play that well or go all out. They’ve taken their opportunities. They shone in the key moments in the game, which were in front of goal.

“I don’t think there’s anyone Stockport should fear in League One if they’re on their game. They won this gear comfortably in gear three. It’s what champions are made of.”

Phil Sproson (Former Port Vale captain on BBC Radio Stoke): “We just weren’t at the races tonight.

“We’re better than that – of course we are. I’m bitterly disappointed with the way we played and I’m sure the players, individually, and the manager are.

“You’ve got to take what we are tonight and go and win the cup game [at home to Maldon & Tiptree] on Sunday.”

Stockport County striker Nathan Lowe speaking to Sky Sports:

“We spoke before the match that I was going to get a hostile reception, which was the case, but it was good way to silence them with a goal.

On the challenge against Marvin Johnson:

“I think it was blown out of proportion. I’m public enemy number one. It was a complete accident, I went to apologise to him but he wasn’t having it.”

Stockport County winger Jack Diamond speaking to Sky Sports:

“It was great going into the game knowing if we win, we go top. After the play off disappointment, it was important to go out and get that early.

“It can swing both ways but if we stay on top, this is a team that can definitely get promoted.”

Stockport boss Dave Challinor speaking to Sky Sports:

“I didn’t think we started the game the best but then had a spell of 30 minutes or so where we were really clinical and took the game beyond Port Vale.

“For a team that has been criticised for winning games 1-0 to go and kill the game off so early is really pleasing.

“We’ve conceded goals so we always wanted to be a front-foot team. We want to try and be front-foot. We had plenty of opportunities [in the second-half] but we didn’t get it.

“We hoped that there wouldn’t be hangover from last season. We made some changes in the summer, we want to try and evolve and we’ve done that.”

Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester: “We look a lot more consistent and solid defensively, which is something we’ve prided ourselves on over the past four years – (as well as) being expansive and trying to score goals.

“For me, those things go hand in hand. I don’t think we’ll ever be a team that wants to win games 6-4.

“We take pride in how we defend as a team, with everybody involved, and do the same when it comes to scoring.

“We’ll enjoy it for what it is right now. We’re 14 games in with 28 points, two points per game, which is a number that over the course of 46 games we’d be happy with.

“But we’re only a fraction of the way through the season, so there’s still a long way to go.”

Port Vale’s Darren Moore told BBC Radio Stoke: “The boys are not showing a real true reflection in terms of where we’re at.

“Defensively this season we’ve been fine – really, really good – so to give soft goals away was the most disappointing part.

“We had two glorious chances in the first 10 minutes but we didn’t capitalise on them and we’ve got to demand more from ourselves in terms of when we get into those positions.

“I don’t think you will see a team more of a complete package than them.

“They really are a good team and have continued where they have left off last season.

“We almost needed a flawless display against this lot here because they are a top, top team. But the group will certainly learn from that.”

Port Vale fans make their frustrations known in a 3-0 defeat to Stockport, who end the night as league leaders…

@1990YelrohT: What does Darren Moore do with them when his has a full week off? 7 days between Wimbledon and Wigan and we were awful. 9 days between Wigan and Stockport… even worse.

@valiantchicken: Fair play to Stockport .aggressive .quick.direct we couldn’t handle http://em.best side I’ve seen this season n to boot we give Norwood the freedom of the park 😆not one player lumped him..as for our defending well that was ansells div 5 at best.we had no

@leesotheran1: Darren Moore getting found out. Too stubborn, playing players out of position and just a poor style of football. Get rid or go down

@SimonK1985: Disgusting performance. Maldon & Tiptree will be rubbing their hands after that shower of shit tonight

@Millertron2011: Embarrassing. Too nice. No footballers in midfield. Negative. Norwood (best stats in the league) came off the pitch cleaner then what he went on. They never got out of second gear. Only positive was Johnson.

@Anthonybpvfc: Was it just me or didn’t Darren Moore look the slightest interested tonight?

@sherratt1876: No positives to take from that whatsoever. Utterly disgraceful performance. Defence weak as piss, we are so wasteful in front of goal and our midfield got bullied all over the place. Maldon will be laughing their bollocks off watching that & will fancy it on Sunday

@mmathiassen: Went away last week saying “worst performance of the season”. One week and game later, and it’s already been outdone…

@AndrewPVFC: We have the best striker in the League and i dont even know where a goal is going to come from! Ojo and Walters good enough for Arsenal, but not good enough for the league apparently.

@GeorgeSutton21: No fight, no passion, no brains, no f’n tactics

@jackbmufc2312: Get him gone that was our strongest side and still wank

@Vernonsdave: I’ll be staggered if Stockport don’t win the league

@PicardyBreezer: I can take losing to a half decent side. Losing to any side in that manner, however, is piss poor. Anything good about us defensively went completely out of the window. Three dogshit goals to concede & too many no shows again. If Sunday goes tits up from here… 👀 #pvfc

@pvfcalex: Well, that was horrific 😳 #pvfc
