Poll launched for fans to vote on the name of new Nuneaton football club

A poll has been set up and launched for fans to vote on the name of the new Nuneaton football club ready for the 2024/25 season.

On the 18th of January 2024, Nuneaton Borough made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Southern Central Premier League due to financial difficulties, with the club going into liquidation.

During the previous year, the club faced numerous challenges, including being locked out of their home ground, Liberty Way.

As a result, they were forced to play their matches at Alvechurch and Barwell to fulfil their fixtures.

Nuneaton Borough was granted permission to play an FA Trophy tie against AFC Fylde at Coventry City’s CBS Arena without any charge.

Despite their efforts, in January 2024, the club was unable to secure a new lease for Liberty Way. This unfortunate turn of events led to their resignation from the Southern Central Premier League and the initiation of the liquidation process.

Furthermore, the club claimed that any future entity of Nuneaton Borough would not be granted a new lease, resulting in Liberty Way no longer being their home ground.

With that, the club expected to be wound up by His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, and now a new club is set to rise for the community of Nuneaton to get behind.

The Nuneaton Borough Supporters Co-operative have quickly put together a ‘Team Name Survey’ so they can register it with the FA.

Nuneaton Borough Supporters’ Co-Operative said: “The steering group met on Monday 12th February and, as we pledged at our initial meeting, Boro fans are at the heart of our decision making process. This will truly be a club created by Nuneatonians for Nuneatonians.

“The success of your new club depends on YOUR support. We are close to being able to announce key information but before we can formalise agreements we need to register a club. We cannot use the name Nuneaton Borough, so we are running a poll to allow supporters to express their preference between two suggested names.

“This poll has been set up with help from the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), and you can vote online at: https://surveymonkey.com/r/nuneaton-team-name

“Time is of the essence and with this in mind the poll will run for five days from Tuesday 13th February until Saturday 17th February at 3pm. The winning club name will be submitted to the FA for approval, and will be used to formally put our plans in place in readiness for next season.

“Today we have contacted the FA to register our intent to apply to join the National League system next season. As soon as supporters’ preference for the club name has been agreed this application will be formally submitted.

“In addition, the creation of our own new Community Interest Company (CIC) was agreed on Monday. A CIC is a company structure set up to benefit the community and not for private profit. We believe that this structure which will give us the flexible governance platform that we need to ensure the sustainability of our club going forward.

“Dialogue has begun with the juniors and ladies’ sections and we hope to be able to have in-depth discussions with them in due course to see how we can work together for everyone’s benefit.

“We have been working hard on our financial model based on data from clubs currently at the various steps in the pyramid where we could be playing next season. The model will be used as a basis for sustainable budgeting when the club is up and running.

“Members of the steering group have a wide range of experience and skills and are working with full support from the FSA. The group is creating smaller sub-committees to focus on specific issues to ensure that everything required is in place as soon as possible.

“We are on the verge of so many exciting developments and more details will be shared with fans as things progress over the next few weeks. Here’s to a bright new future and one that you will have kicked off by choosing the name of YOUR club.

“Which is your preferred name for a new Nuneaton football club? (Club names are subject to FA approval)”

MORE ON PLANS FOR THE NEW NUNEATON FOOTBALL CLUB

At a meeting on 29 January 2024, the Supporters Co-operative agreed to form a Steering Group to explore options for rebuilding the football club. The Steering Group met on 5 February 2024 and unanimously agreed that any new club MUST have the fans at the heart of its decision-making process. This means elected fan representatives taking a leading role in the club’s governance to ensure transparency and accountability.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧? The Steering Group supports the formation of a Community Interest Company (CIC) that benefits not only the football club but the town as a whole. Our view is that a CIC is preferable to a club led by a private business, which would not necessarily act for the community. A CIC is the ideal vehicle for us, as proud Nuneatonians, to make a positive impact on our local community. The Supporters Co-operative is supporting a group of sponsors and sporting bodies within the community to build a club and team for the future.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛? The board of the CIC will consist of elected fan representatives, sponsors and other local institutions. It will not be run by the Supporters Co-operative, and will NOT be run to raise money for owners and shareholders.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧? Forming a CIC will end the boom-and-bust cycle that has dogged the club throughout its recent history and enable us to leave a lasting legacy for future generations of Boro fans.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞? A CIC is the best way to ensure that revenue raised by the football club will be reinvested solely for the benefit of the football club and the local community – something that we, the Steering Group, believe in passionately.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧? Discussions are already well underway to form a new club. The deadline for our application to join the National League System in time for next season is 1 March 2024.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧? We aim to apply for step 5 but no new club can guarantee where it will be placed in the National League System.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠? We have identified short-term groundshare opportunities and these will be followed up in the next few days. We are also in talks to bring the club back to its own ground in Nuneaton as soon as possible.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝? We want to involve fans from the outset and intend to run a poll, with the help of the Football Supporters’ Association so you can choose the name of YOUR club. Details will follow as soon as the poll has been set up.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 – 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨’𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭? We have talked with local businesses and prospective sponsors about funding. As long as the fan base is behind us, we believe the cost of getting our club back up and running in the National League System will not be beyond our reach.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬: All of these discussions are gathering pace with a view to finalising firm commitments in the coming days. The Steering Group is meeting again on 12 February 2024 and will share more information with fans after that.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩? We urge all Boro fans to join the Supporters Co-operative. There’s strength in numbers and a united front is key to giving you, the long-suffering fans, the club you deserve.

Social media users had their say with a poll launched for fans to vote on the name of new Nuneaton football club…

Steve Barnes: Just Afc Nuneaton will do

Paul Mlr: Nuneaton FC

Ben Percival: I would have thought ‘Nuneaton community football club’ would have been best suited? Was it an option or discussed by the steering group. Not having a dig at anybody btw…. Might not have been possible for all I know 😀👍🏻

Dave Sharpe: Boaty McBoatface FC for me 😉

Derek Dunnachie: From my understanding, when you connect with the poll it will give you both names options. If the name is not acceptable, by the FA, we may then use the second name option. I’m led to believe. UT……..!!!

David Hodges: Nuneaton Phoenix

Andrew Daffern: Nuneaton Borough Town, similar to Soham Town Rangers?

Andrew Daffern: How about going back to Nuneaton St Nicolas

David Axon: Or even Nuneaton Wanderers was a name before that

Richard Pearce: Nuneaton rangers fc 💙

Jason Lee: I went for Nuneaton Town
