Police issue statement on fans clashing after Coventry’s win against Leicester

West Midlands Police issue a statement on fans clashing after Coventry’s 2-1 win against Leicester on Saturday afternoon.

Leicester had gone ahead early on through Jordan James, but Ellis Simms levelled shortly after the break thanks to a fortunate deflection, then Haji Wright grabbed a late winner. See more HERE.

After the match, police were on standby for any trouble outside of the ground, with some reports of violence with groups of fans clashing and exchanging insults near the CBS Arena and The Wheatsheaf Inn.

Despite a large police presence in key areas, the situation was quickly brought under control. Footage has since emerged online, as seen above.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: β€œWe had a significant policing operation in place for the fixture yesterday (January 17). It included a number of officers in and around the area, including specialist resources.

β€œWe had a few incidents of disorder between fans near to the ground. Officers responded promptly, and no one was injured.”

Coventry Live reports that officers were stationed in high-risk areas as part of a major policing effort, with police presence at The Wheatsheaf Inn, Broadgate, Arena Shopping Park, and Foleshill Road. Police added that no one was arrested.

@martingriffiths4741: In this video I’m the bloke that you can see landing on the floor at 28.13. Has anyone got any other footage. I suffered quite a few injuries as a result of this and would really appreciate any footage or observations. Thanks mate. Lost some teeth, damaged ribs and lots of cuts. Apart from that I’m ok. Great video.

Howard Black: Absolutely πŸ’― embarrassing 😳 by both sets. Childish and handbags πŸ‘œ at dawn.

Paul Hoskins: Things you don’t want to see, always has to be a group of mindless fans ruining it not just for themselves but others too

Chantelle Warner: What do they expect the police let the Leicester fans out the same time as cov fans it’s inevitable

Simon John Nestoruk: Let the cavemen batter each other better to waste their energy on each other than decent members of society

@yellows4life: what is wrong with some people, all well and good having a bit of banter, but violence really isn’t needed. how hard can it be to just go and enjoy a nice day out at the football, without it resorting to having a fight. good to see the police well on top of this too. surprises me just how many feel comfortable enough to act like that in general and in front all them police officers
