PGMOL give an explanation on the Sunderland goal that got confusingly ruled out in the game vs Derby County on Tuesday night.
Sunderland saw what looked to be a perfectly good goal chalked off by referee Sam Allison. Enzo Le Fee nor Isidor were offside and there had been no foul in the build-up. Both Sunderland and Derby’s social media accounts said it was for offside.
Clinton Morrison, covering the game for Sky Sports News, said: “You tell me why. Because the goal should have stood. He’s gone over to the bench and celebrated, then they said he disallowed the goal. He was onside, they showed the replay, it’s a great ball. The goal was given, it was pointed, it’s a good ball. They watched it again, Le Fee does well here. Tell me if there’s a foul in this build-up.
“No foul whatsoever at all. Isidor puts it into the net, into the net, under the side of the crossbar, goes and celebrates. There’s no VAR here, the referee had pointed back to the spot, the ball was on the spot. Look, he’s onside, so why has it not stood, the goal?
“Oh, please tell me this, because I’m confused there. He’s not offside. The assistant flag’s down, all the way. All the way down, he puts it in the net, the referee looks at his assistant, the assistant goes, goal stands, he goes and celebrates, then they disallow the goal. Could be the fourth official. That’s the only thing that you can think of, because he pointed, there was a celebration. If the referee needs the fourth assistant to where he is on the touchline, wow.”
“The goal should have stood!”

‘Offside’. ‘You come from an offside position’.
This is horrendous by the way. pic.twitter.com/jg6zHYJImN

As per BBC Newcastle Totalsport: the PGMOL attempt to justify the decision not to award the goal to Wilson Isidor last night. Biggest load of crap I’ve heard! pic.twitter.com/vy1oajg5YS

This was talked about on, BBC Newcastle Totalsport, with the PGMOL attempting to justify the decision not to award the goal to Wilson Isidor: “They said when the ball was struck, i.e the pass by Bellingham was played, The other slightly afterwards as the ball is difficult to see in the first image. And they say that in both of those pictures, Isidor is in an offside position. So Bellingham played a ball over the top, which Le Fee controlled, and then it ended up with Isidor who who put it in the net. So what they’re saying basically is, I think, that the goal was disallowed because Isidor was in an offside position from that initial pass, and then his actions he made an obvious action which impacted an opponent’s ability to get the ball, play or challenge for the ball. And then, the referee, we are told, and 2 assistants, were in communication throughout the situation. They had a crack on, had a chat about it, and it resulted, in what the PGNOL says is the team of officials arriving at the correct decision.”
Wilson Isidor tweeted post-match: “Don’t even know what to say…😂😂😂 But +3 points🔥, Great performance from the team, we move on ! See you saturday at the SoL❤️🤍 Thanks to the fans for the support, you are the best 🫶🏽”
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said: “It’s so difficult to judge. It’s a little bit strange. I didn’t speak with the referees at the end of the game, I just watched a clip back – it’s difficult to judge.
“I don’t want to say whether it was a good or bad decision because it’s a decision you have to make in real time, but I don’t know why. It’s strange.
“We would like to have a more relaxed end of the game and then it was difficult to the end. It’s good because the character of the team is more and more powerful, and you need these experiences to learn to stay connected and work till the end.”
Derby boss Paul Warne on the disallowed goal:>/strong> “The thing I thought was strange was the time from it going in to being disallowed, I thought it was lengthy.
“No time during that did I think it was going to be disallowed. I’ve never seen it before, I don’t know why it was disallowed and am grateful for a bit of luck.”
Don’t even know what to say…😂😂😂
But +3 points🔥, Great performance from the team, we move on ! See you saturday at the SoL❤️🤍
Thanks to the fans for the support, you are the best 🫶🏽— Wilson Isidor (@IsidorWilson) January 21, 2025
Andrew Aloia of BBC Sport, gave his take, writing: “Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham lifted a sumptuous ball over the top of the Rams defence for Enzo Le Fee to run onto.
“Was there a hint of an offside at this point? Sure. Any flag raised? No.
“Le Fee then managed to work the ball to Wilson Isidor, who was picking himself up off the ground after colliding with a defender.
“The forward kept his cool, and slammed his effort home off the underside of the crossbar. A great finish that had appeared to put the promotion-chasing visitors’ win beyond doubt.
“Initially, it appeared as if referee Sam Allison was thinking the same thing.
“This is where things got fuzzy. And even when players and managers were talking to media afterwards, no-one seemed completely sure of what to say.
“While the Championship doesn’t make use of a video assistant referee (VAR), it doesn’t mean the officials aren’t connected to one another and constantly talking over the radio.
“It is understood that the two assistant referees were talking Allison through what unfolded and why the goal shouldn’t count.
“It wasn’t a VAR-length review or debate – the sort that leaves some people cursing technology’s encroachment on the game – but it went on long enough for almost everyone to think Sunderland were 2-0 ahead.
“Isidor, it was decided, had been offside when the initial ball was played over the top and while he wasn’t the first to the ball, he impacted how Derby dealt with the danger, with his run tripping up Ebou Adams as he tried to reach Le Fee.
“There are still images taken from television cameras showing where players were stood, but anything anyone says at this point will be debated as right or wrong.
“Still, a goal that seems to be a goal, then is not given as a goal and has people scratching their heads, gives us all something to talk about.”
Ex-Premier League referee, Mark Halsey, said it couldn’t have been due to a handball, at least by the laws of the game, saying it was “difficult to see why the goal was disallowed,” but when a reply put forward the idea of a handball, he responded: “If so, why didn’t the the referee stop the game immediately and give a free kick? It looks totally accidental and he wasn’t the goalscorer.”
Keith Hackett, an ex-FIFA official, meanwhile said to Mackem News: “When you are making big decisions, you do so with confidence and clarity,” explained Hackett. “You blast your whistle and point to the scene of the offence.
“The Championship does not operate with VAR so there is no hesitation. This referee, Sam Allison, is in good contact with play, he is on the brink of selection to the group of Premier League referees. He has officiated two Premier League games this season.
“There is no offside flag in this attack. The assistant runs towards the halfway line confirming that he is happy with the goal. The referee is chasing down the attack. There is a potential impeding offence but rightly not penalised. The referee turns from the edge of the penalty area to run back upfield. He does not blow his whistle, and he is satisfied with the goal.
“So why has he disallowed it? It creates a suspicion of some outside interference. Are the PGMOL experimenting with a new cheaper version of VAR? I have checked this video and see no reason in the build-up to the goal for it to be chalked off.
“Fans have a right to know. I can see no reason why he changed his mind.”
Here’s how fans reacted following PGMOL explanation on the Sunderland goal that got confusingly ruled out vs Derby…
@JackOBr62747836: Investigation needed. Bottled it as soon as he saw Derby players approach him
@Daviddbrownn22: Sunderland need to push this further. Biggest load of shite av ever heard, neither player was ever offside in any instance. Corrupt bastards @FA_PGMOL
@mattbregazzi: I’m a Derby fan and this happened in front of me. Nobody had a clue why it was disallowed and I still don’t!
@passionnufc: Newcastle fan here. As much as I love anything like this going against the Mackems this is awful. This ref has history of shocking decisions, one to mention was the non pen against Barry Bannan who was playing volleyball or football. In the role just because of his ethnicity? 🤔
@iTtZz_RICHIE: The only way that could have been disallowed is the 4th official or the Derby players intimidating the ref into disallowing it, either way they need to release a statement because they’re really dug their own grave here regardless of what it was.
@antoneee_x: The ref & linesman allowed the goal. Then the Derby player speaks to the ref & then the ref listens to his ear piece & disallows the goal almost 20 seconds after it’s scored. That needs an investigation.
@SAFCBible1879: Shocking decision 😂😂😂😂😂
@KP10legend: Ref literally just walked back then got the derby players in his ear then just randomly disallowed it. Needs looking into
@craigboothftm: The standard of refereeing in English football is an absolute joke, every week there is a stand out decision that makes a pure mockery of the officials, someone explain to me why this has been disallowed
@Tony_young78: Regardless of what they say, 1. The linesman didn’t flag. 2. The referee didn’t blow for a free kick. We don’t have VAR. when did chatting and guessing at things afterwards become a thing. Admit your errors it’s basically cheating
@EddieSAFCx: Wasn’t offside but doesn’t explain why it took 30 seconds + after the goal to decide this. As soon as Wilson impacted play the lino should’ve flagged
@straydog73: This is the wording, so after discussion with the other officials it was decided it was offside. So obviously one of the officials was the linesman who kept his flag down in real time.
@dunn_outdoors: I still don’t want VAR before anyone mentions. Just competent refs. If the 4th official has given something from the halfway line, further from play than the ref and linesman that’s absolutely ridiculous.
@CharlieSutton33: This should result in the ref and the linesman never officiating another game. Utterly ridiculous
@marrinpleee: we may have won but i’m livid with that. shocking officiating – sack the lot. every efl official. not a single one capable of doing their job. it’s every week teams have to put up with this. EVERY single game has incidents now.
@lynngillan: How on earth was Sunderland’s second goal disallowed ? No offside, no foul, no flag from the linesman. If it was to do with the 4th official, how long has he had a say in onfield decisions ?
@Fantanafest73: If the rumours are true about the 4th official getting involved in that and changing the refs mind. There needs to be a serious investigation into this shower. Imagine if chalking off that goal made a difference to the result?! Disgrace
