Peterborough Sports sign former Newcastle, Portsmouth and Olympiakos striker

Former Newcastle United and Portsmouth striker Lomana LuaLua has ended his seven-year stint in Turkey for non league football in England.

Peterborough Sports becomes his 15th club to have joined in his career which has seen him play in the Premier League, League One and the top divisions of Greece, Qatar and Cyprus.

The 38 year old has been training with the club for a short while as he waits for international clearance. He’s now said to be ready to make his debut to help the Turbines increase their chances in the Southern League and the FA Trophy.

Why Peterborough Sports you say? Well according to reports, LuaLua played international football alongside former Posh defender Gaby Zakuani for DR Congo, who is said to have recommended that he should find a club in Peterborough.

LuaLua started his career at Colchester in 1998 who at the time were in League One, he scored 21 times in 68 games before then going on to sign for Newcastle United.

Competition for places meant he was less of a regular in the first team, and after four seasons and 88 appearances, he transferred to Portsmouth, the club that had previously loaned him for three months while at the Magpies.

He stayed there for three seasons and in both spells with Pompey, he played 87 games and scored 19 times, his stay with marred however by disciplinary problems and malaria.

He left Portsmouth and moved aboard, representing sides in Greece, Qatar, Cyprus and Turkey, and also had a brief return to English football with Blackpool, who were in the Championship.

LuaLua had an international career, where he made 31 caps and scored seven goals in eleven years with DR Congo. He represented his national team at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

He also earned fame for his somersault goal celebrations, just like this one featured in the Premier League’s Goal of the Day clip.

It is unknown whether LuaLua will make his debut in Saturday’s Southern League Central Premier Division game against Bromsgrove Sporting (16th of November).

If he doesn’t, then it’s likely he will appear in the game after that against Kettering Town in a FA Trophy tie on the 23rd of November.

His new team are currently 9th in the table with 22 points from their first 13 games.
