Peterborough United are on a roll under new boss Luke Williams as their 3-0 win sees Stockport County drop to 2nd in League One.
Luke Williams’s Posh side made it four wins since his appointment with a convincing victory, Ben Woods opened the scoring on his debut on the 5th minute, Kyrell Lisbie doubled the lead just before half time (37′), and Brandon Khela then sealed all three points with a powerful finish on 76 minute.
The result moves Peterborough to within one point of safety while Lincoln replaced Stockport in first place.
Peterborough boss Luke Williams speaking to Sky Sports:
“It was a good one because I think that’s a really tough opposition so to have won in that way was really quite impressive from the players.”
On their approach to the game:
“The main thing was really that if we don’t harass them and if we’re not bright and we’re not very aggressive with them with and without the ball, then we’ll get beat because I know the strength of the opposition and I think that the players really put that into action.
“I almost feel uncomfortable to be honest because I think that Darren (Ferguson)’s done a brilliant job with the group and they were actually in a good place.
“I think really just maybe a fresh start for people, so I don’t think I’ve done a huge amount in that way.
“They really worked very hard today didn’t they? They did look like they were still able to go for the full 90+ minutes.”
Peterborough player of the match Jimmy-Jay Morgan speaking to Sky Sports:
“It’s momentum. Even since I’ve been here, I know we’ve got the players and the quality to do this and I think it’s just the belief within the group.
“It starts with the intensity and how we’re starting games and even how we’re coming out after half-time.
“The intensity we’re playing with, I don’t think there are any teams who can live with it. Then the quality on top of that is just obviously evident.”
Peterborough’s Ben Woods speaking to Sky Sports:
“You see when the ball goes out, we’re getting it straight back into play and it just really gets us going, it gets the crowd going.
“The results are following and we’re playing well.”
On his first goal for the club to open the scoring:
“I’m absolutely buzzing to score. I came in and said I wanted to score goals, to carry on from last season and it’s taken me a little while to get going.
“To be fair, since the new manager has come in, I’ve hit the ground running.”
Stockport manager Dave Challinor speaking to Sky Sports:
“I’m not sure we were particularly deep. We came with a plan of trying to go and jump on people which means you have to defend well in one v one moments. We always knew that was going to be the case.
“The goals we concede are really, really poor goals and those moments cost us and it becomes a poor night for us.”
On Nathan Lowe not starting due to illness in the week:
“I can find as many excuses as I need to find, if you want to make excuses, we’ve not performed well tonight and lost a game of football.
“In normal circumstances, would he [Nathan Lowe] have started, probably.
“But tonight for us was about the start of the game and trying to pinch the ball in good areas.
“For the first half, we won the ball in decent areas but gave it away within a pass.
“When you do that against an open team who leaves players wide, then that’s a risk.”
Here’s how fans reacted with Peterborough on a roll under new boss as their 3-0 win sees Stockport drop to 2nd in League One…
@edward_w97: Lift Luke Williams has given #pufc already is really impressive. Knock Cardiff out of the FA Cup, smash AFC Wimbledon 5-0, progress in the trophy with a win at Crawley, and now knock Stockport off top spot with a 3-0. Can’t be bottom 4 for much longer with standards like this…
@PufcSimmo14: Always had the players but were being held back by a negative style. Feels nice to play with freedom. Kept them quiet from the start and scored 3 good goals. We have beaten 3 sides near the top comfortably. League isnt that strong this season. Fuck off Malik UTP 😂😂
@RRMorleyy: What a fucking performance and what a massive turnaround on the season this has been. I don’t know how but Luke Williams has these boys playing at a level we haven’t seen and the results have been unreal. #pufc
@PoshZach: Another sensational performance. Gave County nothing in the first half and did very well under heavier pressure in the second. Williams has got this TEAM cooking. Excited for Tuesday night already even if it means freezing my bollocks off once more. Up the Posh #pufc
@BrownlowJr: Fair result so no complaints and credit posh, we however were woeful, moxon isnt interested, o keefe full of heart but can’t defend, connelly needs to be the centre of a 3 and diamond in the central attacking role. Lots of quality to come back so no panic and minutes for malik.
@Rorald_: At least you’d win the Scottish league though lads 👏
@MortgageAdviso4: We’ve been playing that badly and winning (somehow) was never going to last. The league table is a complete lie.
@Mike_Ellsmore: Ruined my weekend and its not even Friday thanks lads
@AJNewsome: 13 days to prepare and still put out the wrong teams and tactics, we look lost and uninterested. Poor recruitment and constant injuries for a long period not even just this season.
@joshcraven_: Lose on Saturday and he’s gotta go. Peterborough just dismantled Stockport who were top of the league. Luke Williams showing why he’s good at this level. Teams around us making moves and we’re only getting worse. Yeah we’ve had injuries but it’s getting embarrassing now #pafc
@Deji_billings: further proof of that performance the other week being nothing but embarrassing and shameful #pvfc
