Peterborough cheekily taunt Wrexham after penalty shootout win sends Posh into EFL Trophy Final

Peterborough cheekily taunt Wrexham after penalty shootout win sends Posh into EFL Trophy Final, where they will face Birmingham.

Peterborough came back from 2-0 down to draw with Peterborough, levelling on the 91st minute, taking it to penalties, and won 4-2.

Mo Faal saw his strike put Wrexham ahead against the run of play on 34 minutes before the hosts doubled their lead four minutes later thanks to George Dobson from close range.

Peterborough got themselves a goal back, Malik Mothersille on the rebound after having his penalty saved by Arthur Okonkwo in the 72nd minute.

Then Wrexham failed to clear their lines late on, substitute Bradley Ihionvien put the ball past beyond Okonkwo from close range in the first minute of added time to send the tie to a shootout.

Ihionvien, Ryan de Havilland, Harley Mills and Hector Kyprianou all scored from the spot, while Jed Steer kept out spot kicks from Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee to ensure Peterborough sealed a trip to Wembley.

The Peterborough players after their win against Wrexham to send them to Wembley… “Bye Bye Wrexham, go back to Wales”

“We’ve thrown away a chance to go to Wembley as far as I’m concerned,” Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said, per BBC Sport.

“We were comfortable in the game, 2-0 up and made a lot of changes, I thought the lads did well.

“Two really poor goals to concede. Moments in the game of concentration and seeing the game through, particularly the second one.

“From a game which looked so comfortable for us, to end up not going to Wembley is very difficult to take for us all, but we’ve got no one else to blame but ourselves.”

Despite the significant setback, Wrexham remain well placed to challenge for a third successive promotion.

They currently sit third in League One and are just three points adrift of the play-off places ahead of Saturday’s fixture with Parkinson’s former side Bolton Wanderers in north Wales (12:30 GMT kick-off).

“We’ve said before every round that the league is our number one priority, and it always has been, but when you get so close, we want to finish the job off,” he added.

“We’ve done well in this tournament throughout this season, but now we’ve got to focus on the league and learn from tonight.”

Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson said, per Peterborough Today: “This was a big one for the fans. They have suffered this season yet they have travelled in numbers again. That was for them. It was really important to give them a trip to Wembley and if we can then stay up, maybe we can look back and think it wasn’t that bad of a season.
