Paul Heckingbottom jokes as David Wagner fumes at a ‘clear offside’ decision for the Sheffield United winner at Norwich City.

The Blades boss laughed in his post match interview, saying he was ‘upset’ that his side’s goal was not offside, with it potentially being a crucial one as they boost their automatic promotion hopes.

James McAtee netted after Max Lowe’s double touch at Carrow Road, putting Sheffield United six points ahead of Middlesbrough’s nearest rivals in the Championship.

City’s players appeared to appeal, claiming that McAtee was offside when he slotted past Angus Gunn.

Head coach David Wagner said afterwards he felt there was a clear offside earlier in the build up, but Heckingbottom reckons his side were due a break.

“I’ve been told it’s on-side but I’m not bothered. I wish it was offside, to be honest. It’s upset me that it’s not,” he said. “We’ve had so many go against us this season, as anyone who has seen us regularly will know.

“It’s easy to talk about now we’ve won, but we’re owed. And I hope we get many more between now and the end of the season.

“I liked our mentality and how we were taking risks. I was pleased with how brave we were and how we tried to pass it. I think we were good value for it.

“We were against good players who were in the Premier League last season so they were the benchmark. That is what we want to test ourselves against. Are we good enough, away from home? And we were. We played against good players but Marquinhos had that shot near the end that Wes (Foderingham) saved. And after that, it was comfortable.”

Wagner had no issue with the final ball from Lowe to McAtee.

“This was not the complaint. But in the build up play, there was a clear offside situation,” he said. “And if that offside is given, the goal would not happen. And this was a clear offside I think at least the yard or half a yard when the ball was played in behind.

“Max (Aarons) got the ball on his foot but the game continued and they scored a goal where the final pass is not offside. Unfortunately, he didn’t stop the game when the player was offside.

“I haven’t spoken with them (the officials). At the end of the day, it makes no sense. They made the decision. We have to accept it. And to be fair this doesn’t change that we didn’t play well offensively.”

@FLC1889: Ball never reaches McAtee as the defender intercepts the pass, therefore 100% correct decision to play on regardless of whether McAtee was in an offside position or not when the pass was made. Wagner really needs to go back & learn the offside law correctly 👍
