Oxford United fans react as video of ‘January window targets’ causes commotion

Oxford United fans react as a video of the club’s alleged ‘January window targets’ causes commotion on social media this week.

The wife of former U’s chairman now minor shareholder Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth (Tiger) posted a video on Instagram reading out names to a child.

The two that can be heard are 21 year old West Ham midfielder George Earthy, and 20 year old centre-back Tyler Bindon, who is currently with Sheffield United (on loan from Nottingham Forest). See full list of rumoured January window targets in the fan reaction further down in this article…

One of the players said to be on that list was Jamie Donley, who on Friday the 2nd of January, signed for the club.

A statement read: “Oxford United are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Jamie Donley on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, with an option to make the deal permanent.

“The highly rated 20-year-old Northern Ireland international had an outstanding loan spell at Leyton Orient last season, scoring eight goals and registering a league-high 10 assists. Donley was also named Orient’s Player of the Season as the club reached the League One Play-Off Final.

“An aggressive and creative attacker with a proven end product, he has earned six senior international caps and made four first team appearances for Tottenham Hotspur.

“Jamie, who spent the first half of the current campaign on loan at Stoke, goes straight into the squad ahead of Oxford United’s next Championship fixture.”

Speaking after completing the move, Donley said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I’m determined to make the most of.

“I want to influence games and be decisive in the final third, but that all starts with hard work. I take real pride in working for the team and doing the basics right.

“My loan experiences have taught me a lot. I’ve had big highs and challenging moments but those are what shape you as a player. I feel ready to come here, compete, and show what I can bring.

“First and foremost, I’m here to fight for the badge. When I get on the ball, I want to be positive, take responsibility and create moments that help the team win.”

Head of Football Operations, Ed Waldron, added: “Jamie is an excellent signing for the Club and someone we’ve been tracking for some time. He was one of the standout performers in League One last season, consistently demonstrating his quality as both a scorer and a creator.

“He has the attitude and personality we look for. For his age, he shows real maturity, presence and has an outstanding work ethic.

“Our aim for this window is to add players who can raise the ceiling of the group, and Jamie fits that profile perfectly. With his quality and experience at both club and international level, we are confident he can make an immediate impact.”

@UPTHEDIRTYOX: Ones that have been identified: Paddy McNair, Isiah Jones, George Earthy, Yu Hirakawa, Sam Morsy, Rak-Sakyi, Aidomo Emakhu, Alex Robertson, Ryan Hardie, Tyler Bindon, Paris Magohma, Jack Taylor.

@jakehodgsonn51: Some of the names being leaked by tiger. Isiah Jones, George Earthy, Paris Magohma, Yu Hirakawa , Alex Robertson. All quality. Not sure who the others are. Real intent to try stay up if get 2/3 of those #oufc

@TimWalkerOUFC: Aside from all the commotion I like Tiger’s continuing enthusiasm for the club

@gabrielbeech5: #oufc 🤔

@Joe_Citrone: Heading into a fourth match under the uncertainty of interim management, and just accidentally leaked all our transfer targets on Instagram. Good start to the day, Oxford. 👍 #OUFC

@Callum_OUFC: Never an ordinary day with this football club 😂

@rowanpowell4: #OUFC what actually even is tigers role atm?

@ian042040: To leak our transfers 😉

@Dannyoufc: Minority stake holder

@BenOnWheelss: Peak Oxford United FC somehow managing to leak our January transfer targets on Instagram. I despair. #OUFC

@mlambourne: Can’t believe this has happened! #OUFC

@Theo_Woollard: Tiger giving everyone a glimpse of the transfer targets on Insta.. 😂 #oufc

Scotchegg: I’ll go against the grain on this, but personally I don’t see this as a huge slight on the club. It looks like a well intended family video showing Tiger talking “work” presumably to his grandchild. Its unfortunate that the players were then visible but in reality this changes little. I certainly don’t think that it was deliberate or makes his position untenable. Tiger is a minority share holder in value now, but has always been a much bigger presence within the club. Whilst he wouldn’t be the decision maker on who we bring in, he will take an active interest in club affairs. The thing that seems to have been glossed over is the standard of some of those listed. There are some really promising names that would strengthen this squad and, if signed on permanent deals, would become future assets. This flies in the face of suggestions that the club has settled for relegation and is not looking to spend in this window. The signing of Jamie Donley is definitely a step in the right direction and hopefully this will be the first of many more.

Steve Gilbert: I agree on your last point but the whole thing is amateurish. How many other club directors have we ever seen leak a club’s transfer targets?

DenbighYellow said: Look I’m not defending him by any means, it makes his position untenable in my opinion…. However, from looking at the video posted by his wife, the poor bloke looks to just be reading it on his sofa at home and she’s recorded it as his grandson is climbing all over him.

BarbershopClotet: Where is Jack Taylor supposed to be on that list? I can’t spot him there and it doesn’t sound like a plausible target to me.
From what I can tell so far we’ve got:
First Row: Paddy McNair, Sam Rak-Sakyi (?), Myles Peart-Harris, Paris Maghoma, Isaiah Jones
Second Row: ?, Kodai Sano, Jamie Donley, George Earthy, ?
Third Row: Tyler Bindon, Sam Morsy, ?, Aidomo Emakhu, Ryan Hardie
Fourth Row: ?, Jamie McDonnell, Alex Robertson, Yu Hirakawa?
If that’s right then I am surprised that the club thinks there’s a realistic chance of getting Kodai Sano – he’s being valued at 15 to 20 million euros by NEC Nijmegen, Feyenoord interested. Makes me doubt whether that really is him but the photo seems to match up.

West Oxon U’s: George Earthy, Isiah Jones and Paris Maghoma will give us a fighting chance.

WokinghamYellow: Whether this be incompetence or tactical (and there could be a few different tactical reasons for Tiger to do this) they have delivered on Donley so far. It will be interesting to see if we land any others or if not able to seeing equivalent level of quality coming in. It says to me one way or the other. by the end of Jan we will know where the club is at in terms of finance and ambition.

Brahma: Sadly, I’ll file it under the incompetence section which includes other files such as disingenuous fans forum, matete debacle, transfer embargo, inability to file EFL documents accurately and a chairman who hasn’t been in the country. Meanwhile, club cam sit on their hands waiting to approach out of work managers whilst working out how to achieve being a top 30 club.

Bornyellow:
I’m sorry but as far as Tiger is concerned that should be thank you very much and goodbye… absolutely pathetic. Some of the names on that list though are exactly what we need.
Paddy McNair
Jack Taylor
Isiah Jones
Players who have proven themselves more than capable at this level.

Carpy: Amazes me that the guy likely to chuck the equivalent of a fiver into the transfer kitty gets a list of targets sent his way which he then proceeds to post online 🤣 The incompetence is staggering.

brightonyellow: So I can make out (no particular order): Paddy McNair, Isiah Jones, George Earthy, Yu Hirakawa, Sam Morsey, Alex Matos, Aidomo Emakhu, Alex Robertson, Ryan Hardie, Tyler Bindon, Paris Magohma, Jack Taylor. Cannot believe Tiger here… absolutely mind blowing
