Former UEFA president Michel Platini arrested over awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested over the decision to award Qatar the World Cup in 2022.

Mediapart say was taken into custody in France on Tuesday morning and that he was picked up as part of an ongoing inquiry into alleged rigging of the vote which saw the nation earn the rights to stage the tournament in 2010.

French legend Platini was elected in 2007 and served as president until 2015 when he was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee along with Sepp Blatter.

A number have issues has come about regarding the decision to select them, including human rights concerns and the status of homosexuality.

In 2014 Platini admitted holding a secret meeting with the disgraced football official Mohamed Bin Hammam, shortly before casting his vote for Qatar.

A source close to the HIM at the time told the Telegraph that Platini said he had met the Qatar football official for breakfast in a hotel in Switzerland, just a few days before the controversial decision was made.
