‘One of the ugliest play-off goals ever’ – Dave Challinor reacts after Stockport beat Stevenage in the League One playoff semi final 1st leg.
The Hatters have a 1-0 advantage going into the 2nd leg, thanks Ben Osborn’s 94th minute goal in the most bizarre circumstances.
A lapse in concentration from the Stevenage defence, a blunder, players falling over in comical fashion, only for the ball to be poked home by Osborn. Scenes in the away end…

Stockport boss Dave Challinor said to Sky Sports, as per BBC Sport’s live blog: “It’s one of the ugliest goals the play-offs has ever seen, but valuable as it puts us ahead in the tie.
“The jeopardy (in these games) is enormous. Stevenage are very good at making the game look like they want it to, they ask you questions.
“We’ve got to be a bigger threat but we’ve got a goal which puts us in a decent position.
“The tie is certainly nowhere near over.”
On Ben Osborn’s winner: “Credit to Osborn to follow the play-up and get the deserved luck is great – never give up on anything.
“It’s a big boost (ahead of the second leg) but you have to start the game well (on Wednesday).
“Hopefully we can play a little bit better and make the game look more like we want it to.”
On the Bolton v Bradford game: “We’ll watch tonight and enjoy someone else’s misery.
Dave Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester: “It is a scrappy goal, quite evidently. It puts us in a good position after half of the game.
“It shows if you follow things up and expect them to happen, things do happen. For Ozzy [Ben Osborn] to be that far up the pitch, he gets his just deserts.
“He benefitted from the chaos. Our supporters behind the goal got to celebrate with the team.
“It is not a lead to defend, it is a lead to try and extend. The game is still wide open, we’ve given ourselves a slight advantage. We need the next goal.”
Boro boss Alex Revell told Sky Sports: “Of course it’s frustrating (to lose to a goal like that) we could have dealt with the situation a lot better.
“It’s half-time, no mater what we would have had to go up to Stockport and try and win the game, it doesn’t really change, even though they got the goal.
“The players want to win, they definitely don’t want to concede a goal like that, it’s up to us to pick them up and get them ready and prepared for Wednesday.
“The first half was really positive and we had a couple of moments in the second half when we could have got a shot away. Chances were few and far between today.”
Stockport match-winner Ben Osborn told Sky Sports: “The ref said a minute left, then they made a mistake, (Benony Andresson) has gone through. I just toe-poked it through about four sets of legs, you don’t save those.”
On promotion: “We’d all like promotion. We’d have liked to have finished higher. Our goal was top-two, if we could, but we have had a lot of injuries this season.
“We were happy to make the play-offs, we have come in with freedom, anything can happen, and we back ourselves.”
On scoring the first goal in the EFL play-offs this season: “It was nearly another bore draw, I’m glad it wasn’t.”
Stockport midfielder Ollie Norwood told Sky Sports: “They have beaten us twice this season. we lost here in February, we knew it was going to be difficult, we knew their threats and I thought dealt with them really well today.
“It’s only half-time, we go again, another 90 minutes.
“We have put ourselves in a really good position. We have had a lot of issues, to be in this position, playing a centre forward (Kyle Wootton) at centre half (for the past seven games), we have come through strong as a group and we look forward to Wednesday.”
Here’s how fans reacted to ‘one of the ugliest play-off goals ever’ according to Dave Challinor, who reacts after Stockport beat Stevenage…
@Ryan_Rosee: Oh my days, I’d be sick if I was a Stevenage fan
@a_cheevers6: Lapse in concentration at the worst possible moment. Proper kick in the bollocks, that.
@RichardSTFC94: “Don’t do anything silly lads, see the game out”
@OldManWinter999: Don’t know who’s worse, the Stevenage defenders or keeper. Far too casual
@TSFCPodcast: Ahhh man. Just a bit mess up back there. Gutted for the lads….
@CMF111093: Just fucking hoof the ball away 🙃 clear out your own defender if you have to. Embarrassing way to finish a game.
@stopfordianTJ: unreal limbs in that away end 😆 gerrrrinn
@Alex_Lipniski: Wonder if this is the best ‘limbs’ away from home in the last ten years or so. #StockportCounty
@WilboWednesday: Great dummy from the Stockport player
@SamMunnery: The “whey!” from the Stevenage fans seconds before disaster…
Can someone check if Tantos alright?
