Onana given silent treatment by Amorim and Man Utd dressing room after TWO blunders in Lyon

Andre Onana was given the silent treatment by Ruben Amorim and the Man Utd dressing room after TWO blunders sees Lyon snatch a late draw.

André Onana’s performance against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg was tough to watch truth be told.

He was at fault for both goals in the 2-2 draw, first misjudging Thiago Almada’s free-kick, which slipped through his gloves, and then spilling a shot in stoppage time for Rayan Cherki to level the scoreline.

These errors cost Manchester United a chance to take a lead into the second leg, while everyone says Matic was right about what he said pre-match about the keeper.

Ruben Amorim didn’t tear into Onana publicly. Instead, he took a measured approach, saying there was “nothing” he could say to Onana in the moment that would help.

Amorim emphasised team responsibility, noting that when one player slips up, it’s a collective issue. He expressed confidence in Onana, highlighting that mistakes are part of football and pointing out his own errors as a manager. The focus, he said, was on training and preparing for the next game, not dwelling on the blunders.

This wasn’t quite a “silent treatment” in the cold-shoulder sense, it was more about giving Onana space to reset while backing him publicly.

Amorim’s approach suggests he’s trying to protect his goalkeeper’s confidence, especially after the added pressure from Onana’s pre-match spat with Lyon’s Nemanja Matic, who called him one of United’s worst-ever keepers.

That context likely didn’t help Onana’s night, but Amorim dismissed it as a distraction, focusing instead on the game itself.

The situation leaves United with work to do in the return leg at Old Trafford.

Onana’s errors, eight leading to goals since last season, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper—have fans and pundits frustrated, but Amorim’s response shows he’s not ready to throw him under the bus. Whether that faith holds after another high-stakes match is anyone’s guess.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim: “When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake. So we continue like that.

 “We are really disappointed [to concede late]. We should have taken a one goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home – we will try to win that game.”

On Andre Onana’s mistakes: “[It is] important to focus on the next game for the league and then think about the second leg against Lyon. When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake so we continue like that.”

On whether Onana retains his faith: “No we continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”

Since the start of last season, Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions, the most of any keeper playing for a Premier League club.

But Amorim, who was appointed United manager in November, said: “If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”

When asked if he still had faith in his keeper, Amorim told TNT Sports: “We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”

Paul Scholes: I don’t think Ruben Amorim believes that [his team are continuing to improve]. I don’t think he likes his team to be honest. I think he knows he hasn’t got a great football team. I think he wants better, he needs better.

“I think you can see that from the way he is on the touchline, he always looks disappointed to me.”

Defender Leny Yoro speaking to TNT Sports: “I think this is the worst moment to concede a goal like that. We were winning 2-1, I think away this was a good score but we go with a draw and we try to win the game at home.

“We defended really well but they are a good team, a good striker, so we need to be ready for everything but unfortunately we concede the goal.”

On his first goal for Manchester United: “I didn’t enjoy too much – no celebration because it’s normal, we want to win. No time for celebration. Really happy to score my first goal. We don’t have the win but it’s okay.

“Honestly it was really quick, I don’t even think about anything, I just put my head, try to score.”

On what they can take from the performance into the second leg: “I think to be together like that, defend really well. I think we did really well. It was compact, we tried to block every counter attack, things like that we need to keep it and to give everything at Old Trafford.

“I think if we won 2-1 we would be more confident [to make it through] for sure we concede this goal, it’s difficult but we need to keep our heads up. We didn’t lose, we can win at Old Trafford.”

Twitter users react with Onana given the silent treatment by Amorim and the Man Utd dressing room after TWO blunders…

@mufcaways_:
ONANA
FUCK OFF
PLEASE

@utdrobbo: I’ve never seen a goalkeeper at ANY level parry the ball back into the direction of the opposition in my entire life than Onana. Fair enough, Matic. Worst keeper in club history. Fucking idiot.

@AliceTalksFooty: Can’t believe Lyon fans have been booing Onana the whole night. He has been their best player.

@jhassall9: Matic rent free in Onana’s head 🤣

@gladdlekaine: I’ve played in goal, the fact that he will constantly palm the ball back into the 6 yard box is insane. See it so much, how he has made it to the premier league is crazy

@JordanQuaite92: Matic probably the happiest man in France right now.

@ConorDevlin20: I’m better than him

@arutherford97: “Good save Onana” 🤣🤣🤣

@TomBenbow: He’s like a midfielder who’s went in net for the last 10 minutes of 6 a side to let the keeper have a run about

@JDHibs: If i was Amorim i wouldnt let him back on the bus. Just leave him. What a horrific signing hes been. No Man Utd keeper in my lifetime has been this bad. Hes got to get binned.

@ChrisYNWA: It still blows my mind that the hierarchy at United allowed De Gea to walk out the door for free for this fella….

@RickyHeath91: Had more howlers in one season than De gea did in his whole career. Fucking joke keeper

@tippett_daniel: Matic was right Onana’s Shite 🤣🤣🤣🤣
