Oliver Glasner reacts as Crystal Palace fans and Darren Ambrose hit back at his criticism

Oliver Glasner reacts as Crystal Palace fans and Darren Ambrose hit back at his “disgraceful” criticism before the Wolves game.

The Crystal Palace boss has denied disrespecting supporters, after he told them to “stay humble”. A sign saying “fans disrespected – Glasner finished” was held up before kick-off at Selhurst Park.

A second banner which read ‘opportunities missed – board inept’, was displayed during the game, and it comes after some turned on him at Thursday’s Conference League 1-1 draw against Zrinjski Mostar.

Some fans sang “one-nil to the humble boys” following Evann Guessand’s 90th-minute goal on Sunday. Glasner, whose future at the club is once again thrown into doubt after what he said in his pre-match press conference.

He applauded the home fans as he left the pitch after the final whistle. Some fans applauded back, others booed.

Glasner said: “It’s the way fans can express their opinion,” he said of the banners, “because otherwise, they can’t tell you.

“It’s completely fine. Everybody can tell what he thinks and I do the same. I say what I think is the right thing.

“There were a few boos and there was a banner. That’s completely fine. But I will always say what I think, what I believe. I think I never disrespected anyone.

“This is why I disagree, because everybody who knows me has a huge respect for everyone, regardless of their position, regardless of their skin colour, regardless of their religion, regardless of everything.

“The fans can be disappointed, absolutely. We are disappointed. We are frustrated. And I think I’m the one most of all because I’m so ambitious.

“I want always more and more and more. And I said to the players, I think maybe I pushed too hard. And I take this criticism.

“It’s completely fine. What was important is that they supported the team. They helped to win the game.

“If they feel disrespected, they feel it. I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone. Then it was maybe the wrong words taken.

“But on the other side, I will always say what I think is right, and I’m telling this to my children maybe weekly.

“Stay humble. Never forget where you’re coming from.

“If somebody felt to be disrespected, then I want to say sorry because I never want to disrespect anyone.”

Glasner added that he held clear-the-air talks with the club’s hierarchy, with both they and the players still believing in his capacity to lead the team until the end of the 2025/26 season.

“If the club believes they will have a better result, I don’t want to stand in the way,” he said. “This is what I wanted to express.

“If the players believe with a different manager that they will do better, I don’t want to stand in the way, because I can’t do anything, the players have to do it.

“But, as I spoke to the players, they had the best two years of their life, and they are believing in it.

“The club is the same. If the club had said, we are not really convinced, then it would be better to make a change, but it’s completely the opposite.

“The club believes, the players believe. And of course, I always believe in the team.”

Darren Ambrose said while on Sky Sports News on Sunday: “He’s leaving at the end of the season. Everyone knows he’s leaving. He’s announced he’s leaving. He didn’t need to come out and say this stuff. I don’t understand the reasons behind it unless there’s been a massive fallout behind the scenes.

“And in terms of the things he said about the fans, this is a football club that nearly went out of existence in 2010. I was there, by the way. It nearly went out of existence.

“And it went for their march in the streets and creating the atmosphere that they did. Maybe Crystal Palace wouldn’t be here. Maybe Steve Parish and the Consortium wouldn’t have bought the football club.

“So to say that having been here just for a couple, at Crystal Palace for a couple of years, I thought it was disgraceful comments from him.

“And I feel, I feel that there is what’s turned the supporters against him more than anything else. And I think he needs to do a little bit more research before he says stuff like that.”

Twitter users gave their thoughts as Oliver Glasner reacts to Crystal Palace fans and Darren Ambrose, who hit back at his criticism…

@awmcs: “It’s OK, the fans are as disappointed as we. It’s their opportunity to express their mood. They supported the team right to the end. When we face criticism it’s aboslutely OK. If you are in a bad moment in life you need support and that’s what they gave us today.” #cpfc

@ArthurWaitDM: Good interview to be fair to him. Was worried what his response was going to be. Give him Thursday, if he loses that then he needs to go and we, hopefully, get the manager that we want for next season in early.

@cocainsocialist: dMaybe I’m a hypocrite but I don’t think that banner was particularly necessary today, idk

@HLTCO: I can’t explain how great it is to hear one of your ex-players using their platform in the media to so vehemently defend the fans. Darren Ambrose lived through that admin season with us, without his goals, it’s likely we wouldn’t exist now. What a man.

@MrsF202: Through the trenches. We’ve always ridden the rollercoaster. Yes Darren. What a club legend. Never forget his screamer in 2010 against Villa. Reckon the goalie is still picking it out the net 🚀

@Zackhedg: Thank you Darren someone who gets us ❤️💙🦅🦅

@Wheddsta: Love Darren Ambrose. Proper gets it.

@A_GymGuy: Spot on. I never thought he could do it a big club but if he’s saying these things at palace it’s a huge red flag for a bigger club with big ambitions

@andylatts: I couldn’t give a fuck about the HF wanky banner but if your going to out Glasner & put his name in it you don’t put Board, you name Parish too but they wouldn’t do that bunch of wet wipes ! #cpfc

@LucyGauntlett: Suddenly feel proper sad about this Glasner situation but that’s life, people show you who they truly are and you have to move on. Thanks for the cups but time to go… #cpfc

@ralph_radford7: Glasner still has to go, 20k fans chanting sarcastically at you and holding up banners saying your finished is the boards wake up call let alone the result #cpfc

@Lauredblue4:: From what Glasner’s been saying, the banner willl be a shock to him. He thinks we all love him + should be humble. Thank you for FA Cup, honestly never thought it would happen but just coz you won that doesn’t mean you can down tools+badmouth our players + fans + ruin this season #cpfc
