Oldham Athletic sack their fifth manager in two years

Oldham Athletic have chosen to sack their fifth manager in two years, following the departure of Harry Kewell on Sunday night.

The former Liverpool and Leeds winger has been sacked as manager of the Latics after just over seven months in charge.

The club are currently 16th in League Two after a scoreless draw with Southend on Saturday.

The 42-year-old took over from Dino Maamria last August after spells with Crawley Town and Notts County.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Harry Kewell has today been relieved of his duties as Head Coach of Oldham Athletic.

Arriving in August 2020 he now leaves along with his assistant, Alan Maybury.

We would like to thank both for their efforts this season and wish them well in the future.

An announcement on a replacement will be communicated in due course with no further comment made until then.

Kewell said on Twitter that he was proud of his players and coaching staff and was leaving “without any regrets”.

The Australian was Oldham’s seventh different boss since Abdallah Lemsagam became owner in 2018.

“I honestly felt we were making good progress despite the inconsistency at times,” added Kewell, who won the Champions League as a player with Liverpool in 2005 and represented his country at two World Cups.

“I knew coming into this job that I wouldn’t have a budget to work with and that time wouldn’t be on my side”.

Following the draw against Southend, Kewell was keen to look towards the positives.

“I thought defensively we were solid and we passed the ball around quite well too,” said Kewell.

“We just failed to execute, though, and ultimately our delivery in and around the final third just wasn’t good enough.

“I thought we were in control of the game.

“Don’t forget both teams are fighting hard. We’re fighting to improve our performances but I guess overall a draw was a fair result.

“I think people underestimated Southend a little going into the game. A clean sheet for us is fantastic in my view.

“We’re still trying to build something here but it just wasn’t there for us. Maybe the strikers need to be a bit more ruthless.

“If they want to be the best they can be, they have to prove it to me and others around them.”

Fans reacted as Oldham Athletic sack their fifth manager in two years…

@T145Alex: Well done you fuck ends, you just don’t learn do you and keep on making the same mistakes, just leave before you completely destroy this proud club

@Dark_Mayhemm: Why? This is why we do shit every season. No consistency. Tinpot.

@Leftfieldxx: That’s a real shame, given a fair go I think Harry will be a decent manager. Absolute circus of a club.

@mattgifford: But the common denominator over the past few years remains. Nothing will change until the Sporting Director is held to account and removed. #MoOut #AbdallahOut

@barlow_cr: Unbelievable. OK we’ve been all over the show this season, however, once again, now we have to rummage around again. We’ll employ someone with little experience of league 2 and the beat goes on and on. We’ll be in the same situation this time come December. Keep a fing manager!

@Wykie8: Hope fans realise they are part of the problem if they now go onto buy a season ticket.

@1rhysparsons: You fucking donuts

@OOCSwindonTown: Sheridan wants to come home

@ChrisJStott19: The buck stops with Mo and he should be removed. His record as sporting director is scandalously bad #oafc

@DanCorbishley: Still on course with that 5 year plan????

@pjoturtle: Tinpot. We are a laughing stock.

@kieranmasters21: Wouldn’t be surprised if Keith Curle took over

@Tonylufc28: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Judas scum. Trust me Oldham fans, you are better off well rid of that prick!!

@_isx: Decision made by sporting director whose now proven repeatedly he knows nothing about the sport. Why now? What’s different to the end of the year? What are you actually trying to achieve? Some actual answers would be useful. Sadly might have to start again to see any change.

@gav_b_1977: It’s nothing to do with Kewell, banide, bunn, scholes, wild, shez, Dino, wellens, (have I missed any?) it’s the shitshow that runs the club.

@dobrownelson: Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy

@Jordanator83: Banter FC

@jakeanderrrr: Eh

@kizaer: Derek McInnes would be an ideal replacement. Come and get him…..

@hopey550: Have that dickhead @HarryKewell

@charlieoafc4: Appoint bahamboula as player manager or we riot

@BenCasey1998: Fold

@JohnJ_Buckley: Another one bites the dust. Absolute joke of a club

@foxyphill: Ffs he was doing ok

@MaxCham81147370: We are never going to move on as a club if we keep sacking managers constantly, what’s Abdallah expecting of Kewell when he doesn’t get him a single centre half in the transfer window. How are we ever going to be anything more than mid table fodder

@oldhamshirts: Nothing will change until the clowns above stop interfering with team affairs! No matter who is in charge, this shit will keep happening over and over again. Boring now #oafc big time! 🥱

@charlie__BRFC: Sol Campbell time @1rhysparsons

@oafc19: Recruitment has been the main problem but Kewell wasn’t great. Abdallah Out, Mo out and Barry Out #oafc

@Victoriacbailey: Just look at yourselves. Take a long, hard look. Do you even see what’s happening? You are breaking our club. Don’t you recognise the common denominator? It’s you. The owners. Just go. The fans will pick up the pieces.

@PunchardJohn: Absolutely sick of this revolving door policy.Whilst HK was not my first choice, he deserved to stay on.And they want me to renew my season tickets!!!!!!
