Nuneaton Town appoint joint first team managers and discover league they’ll play in for 24/25

Nuneaton Town appoint joint first team managers Darren Acton and Russell Dodd and discover which league they’ll play in for the 24/25 season.

The club have been played into the Midland Football League Division One (9th tier in English football, 6th tier of non league).

As per the provisional club allocations announced by the FA on Friday (17th May), they will play AFC Bridgnorth, Allexton & New Parks, Bilton Town, Birstall United, Chelmsley Town, Coton Green, Coventry Copeswood, Cradley Town, Gornall Athletic, Heater St Johns, Ingles, Kirby Muxloe, Leicester St Andrews, Lutterworth Athletic, Nuneaton Griff, Paget Rangers, Saffron Dynamo, Smethwick Rangers, Stapenhill, Sutton United (Birmingham), Wednesfield Community.

In October 2023, Nuneaton Borough had been issued with an eviction notice with debts of around £650,000 and bosses claiming that the club had been behind in rent payments since 2019, leading to eviction notice led the club to having to play what they feared to be their last ever match at the home of Stratford Town, but they could afford to play a further two away matches thanks to the efforts of supporters.

On 23 November 2023, the club confirmed that they had been taken over by DA Capital, then in January 2024, they confirmed their withdrawal from the Southern Football League Premier Division Central for the remainder of the season.

Following advice from their legal advisors that their offer to purchase the stadium would not be considered and that a lease agreement could not be reached, investors had pulled out any financial support, meaning the club would be unable to continue trading.

STATEMENT:

Nuneaton Town FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Darren Acton and Russell Dodd as our joint first team managers.

Russell and Darren have been lifelong friends who share the same footballing philosophy and they have previously worked together as the management team at Coventry United.

Darren is no stranger to Boro fans earning legendary status after racking up 347 appearances in goal for the club between 2003 and 2010, including the epic FA Cup ties against Middlesbrough, and he recently returned to the club as goalkeeping coach. He is well known in the non-league scene and has played and coached for a number of other clubs including Telford United, Burton Albion, Kidderminster Harriers, Solihull Moors, Barnet and Alvechurch.

Russell has comprehensive playing and managerial experience predominantly at steps 5 to 7, which encompasses the level that Boro have been provisionally placed at. His network of contacts at these levels will prove to be invaluable as we move forward. His playing career saw him ply his trade with Kidderminster Harriers, Tamworth, Bromsgrove Rovers, Stourbridge and Rushall Olympic amongst others. Moving into management his former clubs include Lichfield City, Coventry United, Highgate United and Coton Green.

The club’s board unanimously agreed to the appointments following a comprehensive recruitment process. Nuneaton Town FC received a number of high calibre applicants and we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to all those who applied. We would also like to put on record our sincere thanks to the club’s football sub-group for all of their hard work during the recruitment process.

Chair Ian Cook said:

“This is great news for the club and the loyal Nuneaton fans. Darren and Russell bring a wealth of experience and the board were very impressed with their plans. Their vision showed that we are all united and share the same goals for our club. Bring on the 2024/25 season.”

With the rebirth of our club well underway, we look forward to welcoming Darren and Russell to the club and helping them to develop a competitive side which our loyal fans can be proud of.
