Nottingham Forest lodge appeal against FA decision to issue owner with FIVE game stadium ban

Nottingham Forest lodge an appeal against the FA decision to issue the owner Evangelos Marinakis with a FIVE game stadium ban.

The FA said: “Nottingham Forest’s Evangelos Marinakis has been sanctioned by an independent Regulatory Commission.

“Evangelos Marinakis was charged with misconduct following Nottingham Forest’s Premier League match against Fulham on Saturday the 28th of September.

“It was alleged that his behaviour around the tunnel area after the final whistle was improper. He denied this charge, but it was found proven by the independent Regulatory Commission, and a five-match stadium/ground suspension has been imposed. ”

The club tweeted: “Nottingham Forest Football Club notes the decision of the Regulatory Commission in relation to its owner, Evangelos Marinakis.

“An appeal has immediately been lodged against this decision in respect of both the liability and the sanction.”

John Percy (@JPercyTelegraph) tweeted: “Breaking: Nuno Espírito Santo has been given a 3-match touchline ban by the FA for misconduct (2 games for comments after Brighton game + extra game triggering suspended ban after Everton). Morgan Gibbs-White banned for 1 game for misconduct after dismissal at Brighton #nffc

Before adding: “And another one: #nffc owner Evangelos Marinakis given a FIVE-game stadium ban for improper conduct following Fulham defeat on Sep 28. Forest expected to appeal, after already contesting FA’s £750k fine from last week for comments on social media. Monday night will be lively…!”

Forest had been unhappy with referee Josh Smith over his decision to award Fulham a penalty in the 51st-minute with Raul Jimenez scoring the winning goal. Forest also had two appeals for spot-kicks of their own turned down.

The club have previously expressed frustration with officiating decisions impacting their season. Marinakis suggested that “unfair decisions” by referees also hampered their 2023-24 campaign.

He said to the BBC back in May: “Referee decisions have cost us points and this is something that has been repeated and repeated and what we expect for the Premier League and referees is to correct these mistakes.”

He won’t be allowed to attend any matches until the 30th of November for the game against Ipswich Town; missing Forest’s games against Crystal Palace, Leicester, West Ham, Newcastle and Arsenal.

The punishment comes a few hours after Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo was given a ban from the touchline for three matches after his red card in the draw at Brighton in September.

An FA statement read: “It was alleged that the Nottingham Forest head coach [Nuno] acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.

“The Nottingham Forest midfielder [Gibbs-White] allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official after being sent off.

“It was alleged that the Brighton and Hove Albion manager [Hurzeler] acted in an improper manner.”

Nuno Espirito Santo admits he is “surprised” by his three-game touchline ban and £55,000 fine given by the Football Association following an incident against Brighton in September.

He told a press conference: “Surprised. It’s a big sanction but nothing we can do now the sanction is there not for me to judge it my job is to move forward and make sure we are ready to help the team – that’s most important.

“It’s tough. It’s not easy but like I said it’s important we are ready as coaching staff, we are going to be in permanent contact, there are phones, radio.

“What’s important is preparing the team well and that’s what we are doing making sure the players are prepared well.

“It cannot disturb us, let’s ignore the noise outside and focus, we have an issue to take care of – it’s at home at the City Ground, we want to try and perform better at home in front of our fans and what we want to do on Monday.

“Let’s not focus on the amount of money, let’s focus on the sanction itself, it’s a three-game ban, it’s a big one. I accept it and I’ll do it.”

Just a week ago, Nottingham Forest were left furious with the FA over being handed a unprecedented punishment for their tweet about Stuart Attwell.

Forest was fined £750,000 by the Football Association (FA) for a social media post related to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Stuart Attwell following their Premier League match against Everton on April 21st, 2024.

After a contentious match where Forest felt they were wrongly denied three penalty appeals, the club posted on Twitter, implying that Stuart Attwell, who was the VAR for the match, might have had a bias due to being a Luton Town fan. Read more HERE.
