Northampton Town confirm manager has resigned following defeat to Stevenage

Northampton Town confirm that manager Jon Brady has resigned from the club following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Stevenage in midweek.

The Cobblers dropped into the drop zone, sitting 21st in the League One table, fourth from bottom, with 18 points from 18 games played.

Brady had success while managing 200 games (W75, D50, L75 37.5 win %) in his four-year reign, as well as winning promotion from League Two and guided them to their highest Football League finish in 15 years in the 2023/24 season.

But his time has come to an end, after pressure mounted on him, and he couldn’t turn the struggling run of form around, the last win coming against Crawley on the 26th of October.

He also recently saw his side crash out of the FA Cup, losing to non league Kettering Town in the First Round.

Footy Insider meanwhile report that Robbie Savage is under consideration for the vacant manager’s job at Northampton Town, with the hierarchy very impressed with his Macclesfield reign.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Northampton Town Football Club can confirm that Jon Brady has resigned his position as manager.

“Upon receiving Jon’s resignation yesterday, the Board of Directors have discussed matters and given the circumstances have agreed to accept,” said Chairman Kelvin Thomas.

“We really appreciate what Jon has done for the club, initially within the academy and over the last four years or so as first team manager.

“I personally appreciated Jon’s kind words earlier this week when he acknowledged how well supported he had been by the club, however we also all fully understand the real pressures that come with being a manager and while we all would have preferred things to be different, we understand Jon’s decision. We will now work with Jon and the LMA on his exit agreement.

“In the meantime we are fortunate that we have a talented, passionate and experienced staff, headed up by Ian Sampson, to oversee things in the interim and allow us the time to work through matters. We also firmly believe we have both the talent and quality within the squad and every confidence in the players at the club.

“It is clear we are a bit of a wounded animal on the pitch at the moment, but we know that the Cobblers supporters will always step up when needed and are sure they will get behind the lads at Sixfields on Monday.”

FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW NORTHAMPTON BOSS:

BetVictor – 5 Dec
Michael Appleton – 3/1
Gary Rowett – 5/1
Andy Whing – 8/1
Leam Richardson – 10/1
Mark Robins – 12/1
Robbie Savage – 12/1
Mark Kennedy – 14/1

Jon Brady said after Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat away at Stevenage: “It was a real tough evening but the players gave absolutely everything they’ve got,” he said.

“We are trying to fight our way through games at the minute with the injuries and Tom knows the sending off was very naïve.

“That gave us a mountain to climb but the boys defended brilliantly with ten men for 60 minutes, the effort they put in was absolutely incredible but a lapse in concentration cost us.

“We defended our box admirably but in the end it just wasn’t to be.

“It’s hard in this moment with the players we’ve got out but our resolve has to be strong. We have to keep our discipline. It was a monumental effort tonight and we have to keep fighting.

“We are suffering at the moment but there are still 28 games to go and we have to remain positive.

“We really appreciate the fans support and we won’t get our heads down, we will keep fighting but we need to get some players back.”

This is how fans reacted as Northampton Town confirm that manager Jon Brady has resigned following defeat to Stevenage…

@KieranMasters12: Had to be done was slowly losing the fans

@vicki2012x: He had the majority, just the minority being dicks!!

@TheLKingston: You have to be joking

@CobblersToMe: Wow! Really didn’t expect this this morning. Jon has done such a wonderful job in bringing the supporters closer to the club and given us great success in his time in charge. Yes things weren’t great on the pitch recently but to have him leave now, is surprising.

@DanielNTFC17: Every fan is allowed to have an opinion, football is ruthless and if Jon didn’t want to see negativity then he shouldn’t of entertained it, he’s a professional and he just had to block out the haters. There’s more to this that we don’t know

@_CiaranMyers35: Gutted. The best we’ve had since Wilder and very worried about who comes next, do not want to get back on the manager merry-go-round again for the next few years.

@ScottP_Brown: Gutted to hear this. I can’t help thinking it’s all a bit premature. Certainly things haven’t been great lately, but I think most of the fans had faith that given some time Brady would get us going again. Only one man for the job. Andy Woodman come home!

@craig_lovesey91: You can’t say it hasn’t been coming. Performances haven’t been anywhere near good enough. Obviously not helped by 10-15 1st teamers out each week. Thanks for a great 4 years, which has been a very successful time for the club. I’m not sure we will get anyone better thoug

@RMcCarthy98: In all seriousness I personally think now is the right time for him to go but that takes nothing away from the job he’s done, the best manager we’ve had since wilder by a country mile but this next appointment is huge we cannot fuck it up

@wadeycobbler: Sad and shocked by this. Gave so much to the cause and gave us some great times. All the best Jon, you’ll be fondly remembered.

@NTFCjonny: Gutted, blokes been class over the last few seasons and given us some unbelievable memories, let’s hope we can bring someone in just as good

@csking75: Don’t support NTFC so no dog in this particular race but I always really rated Brady. Thought he seemed a good bloke, decent young(ish) manager who had some kind of plan which would have worked well for the club overall. Anyway, I guess time will tell.

@vicki2012x: No way!! This is a sad sad day!! Majority didn’t want him to go and unfortunately some of the idiots have made him make this decision! Thanks for the memories and everything Jon!!! @backofthenetfc1

@TheShoeArmy1897: Don’t want to believe it

@NTFCNathan: Anyone who wanted Brady out is a clown.

@Bexxy1976: Nooooooo… Didn’t see this coming at all 😩 A man who wore his heart on his sleeve… I shall miss his passion, I guess the negative pressure has become too much ☹️… Thanks for the memories JB @backofthenetfc1 😭 #NTFC

@soulvitmatt: Well.. Gutted is an understatement. Genuinely LOVED our football club, & this decision would have hurt him so much, but Jon being Jon, has done what he feels is right for the club… Thank You JB for everything, I’ve never known such a togetherness in my 8 years involved at @ntfc

@League1Lowdown: The work Jon’s done over the last 4 years has been outstanding, keeping the club in League 1 last season went under the radar. But it is clear they have regressed slightly this year, in a much more competitive league and sit in the bottom 4, interesting who they get next #ntfc

@TalkOfTheTeyn: Wow… didn’t expect it to happen. Something had to change though. Performances were getting very stale. #ntfc
