Non league match stopped as referee tells chairman to expel fan for what they called linesman

A midweek non league match was stopped for 10 minutes as the referee tells a chairman to expel a fan for what they called the linesman.

@motohopper captured the footage and posted it online, captioning the post: “Ref stops game for 10 minutes and demands Staveley chairman expel a spectator for calling linesman a nobhead!!! @StaveleyMWFC @staplefordtown”

The referee demanded that Staveley Miners Welfare FC’s chairman expel the fan, leading to a heated exchange.

The chairman challenged the referee’s decision, arguing that such language is common in football and shouldn’t warrant stopping the game.

The incident has since sparked a debate on Twitter about acceptable language and referee authority in football.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving Stapleford 5th in the United Counties League Division One with 27 points from 13 games played, while Staveley are 9th with 24 points from 16 games.

Here’s how social media users reacted with the non league match stopped as a referee tells the chairman to expel a fan for what they called the linesman…

@WillcocksOli: Over a 5 year spell from 2016 – 2021. Around 10,000 referees stopped in England. It’s now around 1 in 7 annually, main reason listed as abuse. Soon enough there won’t be enough for games. Knobhead isn’t bad, but you can bet it wasn’t just the word knobhead.

@spaulinnit: I’d do the same for any lino of mine. Officials aren’t there to be insulted. If the lino had called a spectator a knobhead or even less, they’d go absolutely crazy.

@AbsolutelyJosh_: Gotta admit, I am all for this!! Fair play to the ref 👏👏👏💪💪

@spaulinnit: People outraged that they cannot insult a lino. If the lino insulted them, I guarantee they’d want to report it.

@daniel_tortoise: People really aren’t happy to get called out about abusing referees, are they? Good on this referee for actually standing up to the abuse, and it reflects very poorly on the Staveley chairman that he reacts that way to the request

@phillo07: Games on its arse ! Non contact and non banter sport soon #crap

@ScottMessom: If this wasn’t filmed nobody would believe what actually happened. One of the craziest things I have witnessed at a football match.

@aviashea: I got told a story about a linesman who’d endured abuse from a spectator. In the last minute he kept his flag down & the opponent went on to score the winner. He walked back and told the spectator it was offside but he kept his flag down because of him. Simple revenge.

@jpmg36: The Chairman’s a fool. The FA has run the respect campaign for years and are very strict on abuse of officials. If an official asks for a spectator to be removed then the chairman should just simply remove that spectator

@DavidRe86250053: Interesting, seems over the top if it’s an isolated comment, I watch step 5 level 9 and the amount at times of verbal aggression linesman receive from both benches is really intimidating & totally unwarranted, until clubs sort that out demanding a fan to leave is pointless.

@doctor2455: Difficult one this. I think directed abuse in non league football is unacceptable due to close quarters. We need to support our officials, they do very difficult job and are invariably honest and do their best. Easy answer, the guy apologises and we move on.

@DaveStacey47344: The irony of this is the lino has proven the fan right by acting like that about it! Thank God you did record this! Embarrassing

@TheRefereeForum: Fair play to this referee for doing this. Many of them will turn a blind eye saying it’s “part of the game” and that officials are just absorb this kind of knobhead behaviour but it’s well past time The sport continued to accept this. Well done ref.

@CeeJayMilner: Probably a bit over the top but chairman hardly covers himself in glory either

@Kingwolf84: Do you turn up to work to get abused? Why should the Lino get abused? No need for it….

@GeorgeMurfet_: I actually think he should be applauded for self restraint and only calling him a knobhead

@amercer67: I am with the referee on this. Staveley chairman needs to look at himself here. Well done referee.

@EmmaGroundGuide: If they stopped a game every time someone swore at a ref no game would ever make it to half time 😂 Imagine stopping the game every time someone sang ‘the referees a wanker’. Rightly or wrongly it’s part of the game as long as it’s not abusive or personal

@SteveyAsp: The officials are in the wrong game if they’re getting offended at that 🤣🤣 I got called worse and that was just from my wife 🤣🤣

@RussWWFC: Blimey, over sensitive attention seeker making it all about him.

@danielhavern1: games gone 🤣

@CllrMattBoles: What am I seeing here 🙈🙈🙈 gonna be a lot of empty grounds or abandoned games this weekend if this is the new benchmark 🤦🏻‍♂️

@duncan_dunc827: Craziest game of football i think I’ve ever witnessed 🤷‍♂️ 🤣🤣

@trickyvegas: Big up the Staveley chairman

@Luke_Mitchell95: This was up there with one of the most mental things I’ve seen at a football game.
