No holding back in Ange and Son’s post-match interviews as Tottenham lose to AZ Alkmaar

No holding back in Ange and Son’s post-match interviews as Tottenham lose to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League Round of 16 first leg.

Lucas Bergvall’s unfortunate first-half own goal condemned Spurs to 1-0 first-leg defeat, putting more pressure on Ange and his side.

Former Spurs forward Troy Parrott came the closest to doubling the lead ahead of second leg in north London next week, and what a tense atmosphere it will be.

“Tottenham were miles off it,” Jamie O’Hara said while reporting on the game live on Sky Sports News. “Tottenham’s big players didn’t turn up.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: “Not a great night for us. Obviously, it’s a disappointing result but a really disappointing performance.

“We never got a grip on the game, never really got control at any stage. We were always struggling both on and off the ball. It wasn’t a great night, but it’s only halfway and we’re still in the tie.

“It was a tricky pitch and we didn’t really handle it really well. Aside from that, we just weren’t aggressive enough and we were way too passive in terms of the way we pressed.

“Too many times we were just circulating the ball without any real intent to hurt them. No fault for the goal, it happens. It’s more about the collective tonight rather than the individuals.

“Collectively, we were nowhere near the level we needed to be and that’s the thing we need to address.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on Rodrigo Bentancur being suspended for the second leg: “We were always running the tightrope with him being on the yellow cards. It’s disappointing to lose him for the second leg, but we have seven days to address that.”

On Dominic Solanke’s injury: “I think it was a knock, hopefully it’s nothing too bad.”

On if the belief is still there: “Absolutely, at home we’re capable of scoring goals and putting pressure on the opponent.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, speaking in his post-match news conference: “We’ll analyse it and have a look at the areas where we struggled with, but it’s fair to say it was nowhere near the level it needed to be.

“It wasn’t great from us tonight. Pretty much all facets of the game. We didn’t really get to grips with any part of the game. We struggled to gain any momentum with the ball, we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be without the ball.

“I don’t think it’s a matter of effort or attitude. I don’t think it is going out there and not trying, but, like I said, we didn’t really come to grips and have the right mindset to tackle an away fixture in Europe.

“It is always tough and we obviously conceded the goal, which was a disappointing set of events, but even after that we didn’t really settle down into the game at all.

“You are going to face some pressure when you play away from home in Europe and weather the storm and get to grips with it, but we never really did so that was a disappointment.

“We’ve got to be a lot more aggressive than we were. We were just lacking a bit of aggression in everything we did. We were a little bit hesitant with the ball, hesitant in our pressing and we can’t be that way.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on his side’s Europa League defeat to AZ Alkmaar: “The feeling after the game was that we didn’t perform anywhere near the level we wanted to or needed to. Disappointed, I’m disappointed, the players are disappointed. The tie is not over though.

“We get a chance to focus on that after the weekend’s game because now, that becomes the priority.”

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min, speaking to TNT Sports: “It’s nowhere near where we should perform. It was very disappointing that we performed like this, including me. It’s a big wake up call because next week is the biggest game of the season.

“I really don’t think there was too much caution. It’s always tough to play away in the Europa League. We didn’t create anything in the first half, sloppiness, not performing the way we should.

“Everyone is very disappointed about the individual performance and the team performance, we have to look at ourselves. There is no excuses, we were not good enough. It’s just 1-0, it’s still not finished, and next week we have to be much better.”

Here’s how fans reacted after no holding back in Ange and Son’s post-match interviews as Tottenham lose to AZ Alkmaar…

@Dave_THFC1882: This is worse than anything Jose or Conte served up. Stop lying to yourselves about Angeball. Its fucking shit

@jackthfc_: Ange has spent the last 4 months crying about fixture congestion and injuries. He finally gets an 8 day break between games and gets multiple players back only to put on the worst performance of the season 😂😂 sack this c*nt

@STEFANCOYS: This new era of match going fans being slandered is disgusting. Travelling abroad to watch that embarrassment and getting shouted at for not being happy about it 😂😂

@HLTCO: That’s the flattest I think I’ve ever seen Spurs under Postecoglou. For such a big game, they were so far below the required level; they’ve undeniably get more than enough to turn it around in the second leg but even so, it’s now do or die over 90 minutes.

@TalkingTHFC: A comically mediocre night. The manager has taken a lot of flack this season, and tonight showed some worrying signs about how we set up in these big games. The players should all hang their heads for their application, too. Certain individuals talk a lot about wanting to win trophies for this club… now is your chance. This is your opportunity. Big second leg needed. #COYS

@Craig1Osullivan: Ange shouldn’t be anywhere near this club by now. Over 1 & 1/2 seasons and zero progression. He’s absolutely clueless. We have ownership problems but anyone thats suggesting Ange isn’t a problem needs help

@fullback03: A month ago there was a little turn in the tide where we all (rightly) focused on the Board/ Levy & there was a slight feeling of people feeling sorry for Ange & he had some love amongst the fans. He was lucky. No more. He has absolutely stunk the place out ever since. Has to go.

@ChristinaZandes: I’ve supported Ange and I really wanted this to work. That game has done it for me, no excuses whatsoever for that absolute shambolic performance. I don’t even care anymore.

@Glassinho: This is the most boring Spurs team in the 30+ years I’ve supported us. We are absolutely fucking dreadful.

@JeanxTHFC: I don’t want Ange out, but yesterday was spineless, toothless, and embarrassing. I get why some are Ange out, some arguments and doubts are valid, not gonna argue. I’ve just seen us fold in big games under multiple managers. What happened yesterday isn’t new …

@rebekkarnold: If that Spurs result in the Europa League doesn’t seal Ange’s fate they’re not serious, pathetic to play like that after over a week’s rest.
