Nightmare for Nottingham Forest – penalty saved, own goal, red card and booed off in Braga

Nightmare for Nottingham Forest – a penalty saved, an own goal, a red card and then booed off in their 1-0 defeat to Braga on Thursday night.

Sean Dyche’s side suffered a disastrous 54-second spell in the second half, with Morgan Gibbs-White’s spot kick kept out by Lukas Hornicek, and moments later, captain Ryan Yates scored an own goal.

Elliot Anderson was also shown a red card for dissent, meaning he will miss out on the final must-win Europa League fixture against Ferencvaros, Forest now three points off the top eight (automatic qualification).

Braga won without having a single shot on target, then Forest fans made their feelings known, singing “What the f**king hell was that”.

Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates speaking to TNT Sports:

“Very disappointing. I feel we controlled most of the game. Obviously, it’s a very good team [we’re playing] away from home.

“I thought we stifled them. First off, they didn’t have any chances.

“We have an opportunity to make the breakthrough. We don’t. And then, unfortunately, I make a mistake on the other end and could never get a foothold in the game after that.

“That’s football. I think when you get an opportunity, you don’t take it, you get punished. I have to hold my hands up, and I should have done better. We’ve created a few more good chances, but unfortunately, it wasn’t our night.”

Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche speaking to TNT Sports:

“One minute of madness in a game that we’ve never looked in trouble. We’ve never really dominated as much as we hoped.

“We didn’t open them up as many times as we hoped. Obviously, we haven’t got a recognised centre-forward, which can make it tricky. We missed a penalty, but that can happen.

“But then the reaction is, we’re not good enough for the next minute or so. We lose a game to what is a really poor goal.

“We got sucked into playing a bit slow. I mean, the pitch was a slow pitch. Obviously, it’s no one’s fault with the weather.

“We got sucked into playing slow. It didn’t really affect the backline as many times as we’d hoped. But then, of course, we get the penalty. It’s one-end games where you think we seal that.

“We’re pretty much not dominating the game. We had a good feel of the game. We’re keeping them to minimal chances at that point, not too many ourselves.

“And we get another penalty shout. It’s a maybe. I’ve seen them given. It goes against us, and it’s frustrating from there on in, to be honest.”

Here’s how fans reacted after a nightmare night for Nottingham Forest, with a penalty saved, an own goal scored, a red card and booed off in Braga…

@BenHarries: 2 out of 4 on penalties for MGW isn’t going to keep him the job. Lots of awful performances again. The set up, attitude and pace of the play is all too slow and labored. I feel bad for the fans that traveled to the game, they deserved more effort.

@stekallen: Boooooo. Not fit to wear the shirt. Do the honourable thing refund every supporter in Portugal. That was a disgrace

@palarsebald: £1bn squad, 3 players in every position, England’s ‘best midfielder’, and absolutely embarrassing the country in a competition you should never have been in. What happens when you cheat your way in. We’ll show you how this is done next year. Unless you want our spot again?

@1Jennyb: A lesson from Dyche on how not to pick a starting 11 – Leave your best players on the bench, give the opposition a head start, then panic sub once it’s too late! 🤯 Just start your best team! Then IF they are winning comfortably, you can make substitutions. Not rocket science 🙄

@sammy_ameobi: Abhorrent performance. Hope the lads read some of these comments. Hopefully they show some bottle and refund all the travelling fans their entire trips with hotels etc. Absolutely disgusting excuse for a team.

@redmannffc: Pathetic club. An owner that’s messed up every single decision this year. Appalling.

@sunilsood1: That’s pathetic. This is on the genius who sold Kali and left us short up front. Plus the ridiculous tactics and line up. Leaving subs so late. Sorry dyche out.

@lloseby: Refund the fans, fine the players that didn’t go over to the fans. Leave Dyche in Portugal

@APerfectFool: Dyche out, Edu out and for once in your life put your hand in your pocket and pay for a decent manager #NFFC

@bondkaren76: I trust the players and Dyche will be refunding all of the fans who flew out in their thousands to support them after that utterly atrocious performance #NFFC

@ tom_banx: I don’t really have the energy to get frustrated any more. In 6 weeks’ time it’ll be season ticket renewal time, and the circus will be wanting best part of a grand for this shit on repeat. That’ll be interesting 🫣
