A report claims next season’s Championship could be regionalised with north and south sections consisting of 12 teams each.
The idea has been suggested to reduce the number of games, travel and accommodation needed to determine the outcome of the Championship for the 2020/21 season.
The EFL hope to complete all remaining fixtures behind closed doors within 56 days from July, despite club chairmen now starting to express they want to end it immediately.
If the season resumes, it will no doubt see the start of next season delayed, meaning potentially another late finish, unless a cup competition is dropped or they go with this new idea. This is how it could look…
Championship North section
Barnsley, Blackburn, Derby, Huddersfield, Leeds, Hull, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke and Wigan.
Championship South section
Birmingham, Brentford, Bristol City, Cardiff, Charlton, Fulham, Luton, Millwall, QPR, Reading, Swansea, West Brom
*If promotion and relegation is decided for the 2019/20 season, then expect different teams in 2020/21
One of the more radical ideas out there. ? ?♂️#lufc https://t.co/CBM9zeUvci

“A league revamp would involve the 12 teams in each sub-division clashing home and away before coming together for play-offs to decide promotion and perhaps relegation,”claims the report.
“This would, in theory, reduce the risk of the competition having to shut down in the wake of new COVID-19 outbreaks. It would also cut travel and accommodation costs.”
The plans would see each team play only 11 home matches as opposed to the 23 currently on the schedule.
Interestingly, the 1939–1940 season was suspended in September after the outbreak of World War II. After the abandonment of the football programme, the league was split into ten mini regional leagues.
Right now, we don’t know what to believe or what the EFL will go with if the season ends up getting cancelled.
No one knows how long the country will be in lockdown and until then, we can only just report what we see, no matter how completely bizarre numerous plans are, including this latest one.
So then, after reading that next season’s Championship could be regionalised with north and south sections, we want to know what you think of it, let us know by commenting HERE.
