Newcastle United part company with manager

Rafa Benítez and Newcastle United have parted company after they failed to agree a new contract.

The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League last season with Benitez securing the club’s top-flight status.

He was first appointed with the side in March 2016 with the club 19th, he couldn’t save them from the drop to the Championship but ended up guiding them back to the top flight after just one season in the second tier.

He then took them to two mid-table finishes, which was brilliant considering that he was not getting much to spend at all.

It is also reported he wanted Newcastle to compete for a European qualification place and potentially lift a domestic trophy, however unfortunately never happened, and we all know who to blame for that one.

Talk of a hugely anticipated takeover was looking like it could happen, though it’s been weeks now that anyone has heard any more about it, leaving fans and Alan Shearer frustrated.

THE CLUB STATEMENT:

It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.

We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.

Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30th June.

We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

The process to appoint a successor will now begin.
