It was revealed yesterday that Gateshead will be hosting a legends match between the club’s and Newcastle United’s legends next year.
The game aims to give the National League club a boost to their much needed funds after admitting that they’re realistically playing with a bottom four budget.
Some legends have already been named for both sides. Gateshead’s manager and former Magpies player Steve Watson (also played for Villa, Everton, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday) has booked his place in the Newcastle Legends team with old teammates Steve Howey and Peter Beardsley.
Former Sunderland, Hartlepool United, Gateshead and South Shields player Ben Clark will captain the Heed’s legends team.
As Christmas approaches closer and closer, more stars will be named for both sides.

Ben Clark said, as quoted by the Chronicle: “It’s a really exciting game which I think everyone connected with Gateshead and Newcastle should be looking forward to.
“Me and the Gateshead lads are obviously looking forward to it. We’ve got a few names down already but I was looking through the programmes from the Wembley season the other day and getting in touch with the lads.
“I think the Gateshead fans will be excited with the squad we’re putting together.
“Obviously I’m still in touch with most of the other lads so it’ll be great to roll back the years and pull on a Gateshead shirt to play with them all once again.
“A lot of us will have grown up watching those players for Newcastle and England.
“Half my family are black and white so to be playing against the likes of Peter Beardsley, who I still remember lighting up the World Cup in 1990, will be a fantastic experience.
“I know quite a few of the old Gateshead players are still playing football at non-league level but hopefully that will give us an edge!”
Managing Director of Newcastle Legends Steve Wraith also added: “We are delighted to be helping stage this game to raise money for Gateshead Football Club. “We have had some big games over the last few years against Manchester United and Liverpool but there is certainly a bit of spice with a local derby.
“I have spoken to a lot of the Newcastle Legends and there its a real buzz about the game.”
Tickets are just £10 for adults, £5 for under-18s and will be available to purchase online on Gateshead’s website.
The game will take place on the 7th of April 2019 with it kicking off at 1:30pm.
