Newcastle fans laugh as howler from Thiago Silva leads to Chelsea conceding in 4-1 defeat

Newcastle United fans couldn’t help but laugh as a howler from Thiago Silva leads to Chelsea conceding in their 4-1 defeat.

Thiago Silva was told to ‘retire now’ by fans on social media with the Blues player came away from the game rather red faced by the mistakes. Not the record-breaking appearance he was hoping for.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino named in his starting line-up for his side’s clash against the Magpies at St James’ Park on Saturday, with Silva’s inclusion meaning that he broke a record that had stood for 76 years previously, becoming the oldest outfield player to have ever played for the club at at 39 years and 64 days.

Alexander Isak netted on the 13th minutes, before Chelsea managed to get one back 10 minutes later, thanks to a free kick from Raheem Sterling.

Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton scored a quick double before Reece James saw red; and then Anthony Gordon added late fourth.

Silva messed up for Joelinton’s goal, after he was seen shifting onto his right, but somewhat left the ball behind for Joelinton – on a booking after dragging Reece James with his arm round his neck – snatching the ball and sent it beyond keeper Robert Sanchez.

James was soon sent off, getting a second yellow for a pull back on Gordon after trying tried to make his way into the Chelsea box.

The result meant Newcastle are 6th in the Premier League table with 23 points from 12 games, while Chelsea find themselves sitting 11th with 16 points from 13 games played.

Player of the match: Anthony Gordon

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Premier League Productions: “It was a real statement of character within the squad. We really asked the players to step up, and we really deserved to win. Big positives from today.

“The leaders within the group set the tone – Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie. They make sure we don’t surrender.

On Lewis Miley: “The biggest compliment I can give him is the pass for the first goal – an incredible decision, and he has the right temperament. A lot of young players would have wanted to shoot there. We have high hopes for him.”

“If you are disjointed and go away from your principles, you will be in trouble. We try to be us.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Premier League Productions: “It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands. We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning. We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy. Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.

“It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise. We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off. We cannot blame the players, it is the team together. We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn about this situation.

“There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength. We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic.”

After the game Thiago Silva tweeted to his follower: “I’m devastated. It wasn’t a good day for us. I would like to apologize to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day. I take full responsibility. Let’s gather strength and come back stronger 🙏🏽💙”

@ComingHomeNUFC: Great assist from Silva tbf

@CharIieBennett: Joelinton just sent his international teammate (Thiago Silva) to his zimmer frame there. 😅 #NUFC

@JonnyJMW90: This on top of him allowing Joelinton a goal, from inside the box might I add, is Silva past it? Maybe… #NUFC #CFC

@nufcsean: I know we won 4-1 but this might be the best thing about today.

@megamarvatron: “Hey Siri, play a clip where everyone shouts WEYYYYYYYYY”

@Holz_mfc: I would have walked off the pitch and gone home 😂

@DAJPoole: Dunno which assist was the best out of Miley, Gordon, Miggy or Thiago Silva. I think Miley’s edges it, but Silva a close second. #NUFC
