New angles emerge as Coventry’s Jay Dasilva gets sent off for ‘trip’ on Luton’s Millenic Alli, sparking quite the reaction online.

Just 13 minutes into the Championship fixture, Coventry were reduced to ten men as Dasilva saw red, with it a controversial decision with fans.

The lunchtime clash with so much riding on it, with the Hatters, who were playing Premier League football less than 12 months ago, only in the relegation zone on goal difference behind Derby – who travel to fellow strugglers Hull City later this afternoon – and will be desperate for three points.

Also wanting a win are the Sky Blues, who could confirm their place in the play-offs if they get a victory and both Middlesbrough and Millwall fail to do so in the 3pm kick offs.

Sky Sports wrote: “13: RED! Dasilva walks!! He’s misjudged the flight of the ball, which allowed Alli to race free on goal and then he’s tripped. He was the last man, not sure Kitching was getting round on the cover. Referee Oliver Langford didn’t hesitate and Coventry are down to 10.”

Mike Dean on EFL Goal Zone on Soccer Saturday: “The defender is unlucky but he has clipped him. Once the referee gives the free-kick he has to send him off.”

On the BBC Sport live blog: “Wow, what a major blow this is for Coventry!

“Millenic Alli chases a long ball over the top for Luton and he’s clean through on the right about 20 yards from goal.

“Jay Dasilva is desperately scampering back and clips Alli’s heels. The ref shows Dasilva the straight red and Coventry are down to 10 men after just 13 minutes.”

They later added: “Looking back at the red card for Coventry full-back Jay Dasilva… some may argue it’s a tad harsh.

“Was there enough contact, if any? Was it a clear goalscoring opportunity for Millenic Alli? Did the Sky Blues have defensive cover coming across in the box? Frank Lampard will be asking all of those questions.”

Rob Gurney (BBC Radio CWR Sport): “I’ve looked at it again and Millenic Alli trips himself up.”

Steve Ogrizovic (Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper on BBC CWR): “I’ve got a problem with that.

“Technically he’s through on goal but that is not a foul.

“At some point they have to bring on Jake Bidwell.”

Luton came very close to taking the lead in the second half, Liam Walsh struck a powerful effort from 25 yards towards the far corner and Coventry keeper Brad Collins dived to his left to make an outstanding finger-tipped save to push it onto the crossbar.

Steve Ogrizovic (on BBC CWR): “It’s a great save from Brad Collins.

“The form that he’s in, that is a brilliant save.

“The footwork in really impressive and he gets a high hand to it.

“He’ll be really impressed with that.”

On the 68th minute, Luton went down to 10. Liam Walsh, picking up his third red card of the season.

The referee gives Luton a free-kick but Walsh then went over to Coventry’s Liam Binks and gave him a good shove, into a fellow Luton player.

Steve Ogrizovic (on BBC CWR): “Well that changes everything.

“Coventry have a chance of winning this game.

“That’s the one thing you don’t do. He’s on a yellow card and he just pushes him.”

Clinton Morrison on EFL Goal Zone on Soccer Saturday: “It’s never a straight red card. He hardly touched him.”

Mike Dean on EFL Goal Zone on Soccer Saturday: “It’s very, very harsh.”

Then in the 90th minute, Luton made it three wins in a row four, as they reignite their bid to stay in the Championship. Three clear of the drop as it stands.

Sickener for play-off chasing Coventry, the ball came into the box with goalkeeper Brad Collins flying out of his goal and clattered into the back of Liam Kitching as he tried to head clear.

It fell straight to Shandon Baptiste on the edge of the box and he sent a low shot goalwards… Luis Binks tried to clear it on the line but couldn’t keep it out.

Coventry stay sixth but Middlesbrough and Millwall are still to play

Luton are out of the bottom three and up to 20th, with all their rivals at the bottom of the table playing from 3pm.

Luton boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“The industry we are involved in is going to throw so many challenges your way and you have to try and stay calm and think clearly.

“We had the momentum, we hit the post, their goalkeeper has made a couple of incredible saves, but the ball doesn’t go in so there’s a risk of frustration.

“All of those things go into the pot and for us to find a moment right at the end is incredibly pleasing.

“Shandon is a boy who is really diligent about his work, I think he’s a fantastic player and for him to have that moment after some of the disappointments he’s had this year is fantastic.”

Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, remembering his late father:

“He was there every day, he pushed me to the limit, he never gave me a day off.

“It’s thanks to him that I’m here, thanks to him that I’ve got a career, he was not a man of many words but was direct in his approach for me and my brother.

“He watched every game till I was 18, 19, 20, he never missed a training session, he worked at night so he could take me to school and bring me to training, he did everything for me.

“For me, it’s very difficult, because I used to get a message after the game and I will not get that message any more, but he is with me forever.”

Coventry boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR:

“We gave absolutely everything, we dug in with 10 men for a long, long time, I know it levelled out but the effort they put in against a team that goes direct, and cross it a lot, when you’re a man down it’s a long afternoon and the lads’ spirit was brilliant.

“It was probably a red (for Dasilva) – he said he didn’t mean to but he clips his heels and pretty much every referee, even thought they’re hard to predict at the minute, will give those and he was very quick with his card.

“There’s a great spirit in the group, that’s why we’ve been able to amass points and move up the table because of spirit first and quality second.

“It’s not easy to change gear from desperation and defending but (after their sending off) we got on the ball in different situations, didn’t create massive chances but they should have gone down to nine and I thought the game was ours – but you can’t legislate for a late mistake that leads to their goal.”
