New additions have been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad announcement for upcoming games against Ukraine and Scotland.
The Three Lions travel to face Ukraine in their Euro 2024 qualifier, which will be played in Wroclaw, Poland on the 9th of September before facing off with rival Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park on the 12th of September in a match to mark the 150th anniversary of the first ever international match.
There was talk before the announcement that we could potentially see an inclusion for any of Lee Carsley’s Euro U21 winners after they made history in July with a 1-0 victory over Spain to seal their first title since 1984.
Among their names being rumoured for the senior team were Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, new Burnley keeper James Trafford, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and in-form Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.
Have any of them made it in? Time to check out the full squad list…

QUOTES FROM SOUTHGATE
“[Eddie Nketiah and Levi Colwill] are two young players who are doing very well, who’ve done well with our junior teams. Levi had some time with us in the summer.
“Really the basis of this squad is, we left Old Trafford after two really good performances, four good performances in the group, so I didn’t really want to move from the squad we had that day.
“We’re only three games into the start of the season, but we’ve had a lot of people at the back with with issues so we’ve had to make changes there.
“The only other change then is Eddie, who’s coming in because it’s an area where we’d like to have a look at him. He’s a young player with a really good pedigree, very good finisher, he’s the record goal scorer with the U21s.”
“It’s a difficult call. Raheem isn’t particularly happy about it and I understand that.
“We were really pleased with the group [after the Euro qualifiers], to bring Raheem back in we’ve got to leave somebody else out. And on the back of those three games, I didn’t think anybody in this group of attacking players warrant being left out.
“It’s really good to see him start the season so well, he looks in good condition. He looks hungry. He’s obviously an important player for us, and has been an important player for us.
“But we have a lot of competition for places and I think all of those players have started the season well.”
Meanwhile, Scotland Head Coach Steve Clarke has named a 25-man squad for next month’s international double header.
Scotland will take on Cyprus in Larnaca in their UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier on Friday the 8th of September, before taking on England at Hampden on Tuesday the 12th of September.
Scotland picked up back-to-back victories over Norway and Georgia in the last camp in June, to maintain a 100 per cent record in Group A.

On Elliot Anderson, the Scotland boss said Steve Clarke: “Obviously he’s a good player and he’s doing well for his club. Elliot’s one who has been through the underage groups with Scotland and one we’ve had an eye on. He had an enquiry and a little think about choosing between Scotland and England.
“We had some good discussions with the boy and his family and he’s chosen to come with us, which I think is good for us now – and certainly good for us in the future.
“Obviously, when you get to a certain stage in your career and you can say your career has started to take off, which Elliot’s has at Newcastle. We’ve got some great reports from people within the club at Newcastle, which is great to hear.
“And then you have to make that choice. Elliot was born in England, he’s got decisions to make and we’re just happy he’s come down on our side.
“I’ve always tried to look down towards the underage groups – the U21s – to try and give a pathway so we’re not just having a squad for now but looking to build a squad that will carry us through not just the next tournament but the one after that and the one after that, and Elliot is part of that process.”
Scotland and Rangers defender John Souttar speaking to Sky Sports:
“I think qualification does feel close, there’s no denying that. Everyone in the country knows it’s close but also knows how much we still have left to do to qualify.
“We’ve done unbelievably to put ourselves in the situation we are in now, but there’s a long way to go, we need to get the points that will guarantee us qualification.
“It’s an exciting time for everybody involved, especially that result in Norway. The character the boy shows to come back from 1-0 down with those two goals was huge.
“It shows the turnaround we’ve had as a country because I know from growing up and watching Scotland you fear the worst going a goal down. I’m sure everyone’s been through it.
“Everyone knows how big the Cyprus game is first and foremost, it’s huge, so all focus will be on that. Then to play England, you want to grow up and play against them, so being involved in that fixture would be something to really look forward to.”
Here’s how fans reacted as new additions are named in Southgate’s England squad announcement for Ukraine and Scotland games…
@ToonPolls: Maguire and Phillips who never get a kick and Henderson who plays in a pub league. Southgate can never again say he picks players on form. Literally pointless what you do at club level. Pathetic.
@NickyHayesPhoto: Well done to Gareth Southgate for picking form players haha as Maguire and Phillips haven’t made a mistake between them this season to date…Keep it up geez…!!!
@PageDcfc: Martyn waghorn robbed
@HamImages: How is Phillips in there but no Bowen or Ward-Prowse?
@Engr_Series: As usual, Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire 😂
@harryxafc: No Ben White, Solly March, Ward-Prowse, Gibbs-White? Maguire, Phillips and Henderson included? Really? At least Nketiah gets a deserved call-up.
@LiquidatorPod: Can someone tell Gareth that Henderson retired this summer?
@TheVillaTalk_: Ezri Konsa robbed.
@Jimmy__MUFC: Embarrassing that Maguire and Phillips get in without playing a minute for their clubs this season. Southgate needs to stop picking his favourites
@NorthStandChat: Lewis Dunk 💙
@Sammy_dodgerx: Lol. No Bowen or Ward Prowse. Embarrassing
@NUFCLC: Absolutley starting to despise this bloke. Just picks his pals. Phillips is a glorified cheerleader, no club even wants Maguire let alone his own and Henderson is playing against bus drivers. That’s before you look at the fact he’s left Bowen and Sterling out too.
@Latics_WN6: Good strong squad imo. Let’s all but seal Euros and shut the Scot’s up. Btw, people slagging off Maguire and Henderson, they never let England down and have experience. But who would you pick instead?
