Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright give their take on the FA Cup replay debate after the Tamworth – Tottenham tie.
The Overlap pundits discussed whether Tamworth was unfairly denied a replay against Tottenham, which could have led to a significant financial gain for the lower league club due to the potential replay at Tottenham.
The mention of FA Cup replays ties into a broader discussion on changes in the competition’s format, where replays have been scrapped to reduce fixture congestion, impacting smaller clubs like Tamworth by removing opportunities for financial windfalls.

Gary Neville read out a question: “Do you think replay should return in the FA Cup? It seems unfair that Tamworth would deny the possibility to earn around Ā£1,000,000 that a replay at Tottenham would have brought.”
He said: “I’m categoric on this, honestly. You can’t have it always. You can’t have less football. You can’t have basically less football, which everyone’s calling for less football, no replays.”
Gary Neville: “You can’t also keep the magic of the FA Cup. Tamworth had a chance to knock Tottenham out in extra time on Sunday. If it had been a replay after full time, they would’ve got battered 4, 5, 6.”
Ian Wright: “As much as you’re talking about, like, Tamworth who themselves done brilliantly back to back promotions and everything, they’ve got to the Third Round of the FA Cup.”
Gary: “Yeah.”
Ian: “This team and the teams of that stature, they’ve taken Tottenham… Tottenham brought on 3 of their main men in extra time to get this done. Right?”
Gary: “And they would have brought them on earlier if it wasn’t penalties. But if it wasn’t extra time, they would have brought one after 60 minutes.”
Ian: “So what I’m saying is is that when so, Tamworth with their players, they’ve done brilliantly. Didn’t they Roy? They’ve done brilliantly defending and done everything. What’s in it for them? How do they get so so the only thing they get from it is hoping they get to the Third Round after trying to progress through the leagues and that, and hoping they get in a way tie to Liverpool, to Tottenham, so as they might get that windfall. They deserve that windfall off of that performance in itself.”
Roy: “Are we going back to cash then?”
Ian: “For them we should be thinking about the cash aspect.”
Roy: “They made a few bob… the TV”
Ian: “They made a few bob, but they could have made a lot more”

This is how fans reacted as Neville, Keane, Carragher, Wright give their take on FA Cup replay debate after the Tamworth tie…
@Roche1104: Top 6 mentality there as clear as day. No one below the teams in Europe are saying there’s too many games. Tamworth certainly aren’t. Standard for this pod. Needs someone on it that understands football beyond the top 6…
@DanSFCKeen: How can you part own a league 2 team and hold this opinion, absolutely baffling
@nxck1_: A League Two team who have first hand seen the financial benefit of a tie at a Premier League ground THIS SEASON.
@fcislocheng: I notice Tamworth were playing last night in the National League Cup, the competition that FA Cup replays were abolished for, so they’ve rather dug their own ditch here. Of course replays should be reinstated, at least for rounds 1-3.
@dam131289: But again they beat another team in the round before after extra time and pens. If that game had gone to a replay whoās to say they would have got through. And so would never have got the game with spurs and no tv money in the first place
@Lipsy198: Wright spot on as usual
@JReadingAloud87: Sure heād say the same if Salford were playing Spurs..
@ReeceDSport: They just donāt get it do they
@tricksandmaxims: If it was about giving Tamworth a proper chance to knock Spurs out like Neville is implying, the game would’ve gone straight to pens (rather than asking semi pros to play another 30 minutes against fresh legged elite athletes). Also why assume Tamworth would lose the replay 6-0?
@nxck1_: The āMagic of the Cupā isnāt just about winning the game as an underdog, itās the life changing experiences, opportunities it can bring. Tamworth were able to make their manager full time with the money from their tie, imagine what they couldāve done with the replay money.
@WHUFCallum_: Thank god for Ian Wright in this situation
@YknotDias: I don’t do this often, but, I agree with Ian Wright there, to bring a W2S classic back “if your baby chokes on a toy, it was a stupid baby anyway”, or that into football terms and you’ve got “if your B Team loses to a team in the 5th tier, it was a shit team anyway” š
@Iain2509: They really don’t get it do they? It’s not about beating Tottenham at all. It’s about getting the chance to stabilise a club and a community for years to come. It’s about the players earning a chance to play at White Hart Lane. It’s the experience for the fans.
@NathanShapland_: I for one am shocked that multi millionaire Gary Neville (who I’m starting to think is AI) has this opinion
@rickyleegriffi2: Stop the worldwide pre season tours. They added more games into European tournaments this season. Replays were in the tournament for non league teams this season anyway they were scrapped to help the big boys not the other way round.
@JoshhB_24: Ian wright the only one that actually talks sense
@_mighty_quinn_: I’ve more of a problem with Neville owning a lower league club than I do with Ryan Reynolds. Neville does not get it and will never get it. His abysmal running of Salford was proof if it was needed; he views the lower leagues almost with contempt, as if they’re an inconvenience
@WHUFCallum_: Wright with some common sense, the others just thinking of the big clubs as usual
@JacobHorsfall_: Ian Wright the only one that gets it when it comes to these types of discussions
