“Never seen anything like it” – MK Dons boss Mike Williamson spoke on controversial disallowed goal against Wrexham on Tuesday night.
According to Williamson, his side were unjustly denied a “clear goal” in their 1-1 draw against fellow promotion hopefuls Wrexham.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo seemed to struggle in handling Joe Tomlinson’s shot, resulting in the ball crossing the goal line.
Unfortunately, Dons captain Dean Lewington was shown a red card for expressing his discontent with the decision made by referee Sam Purkiss.
Both sides finished with 10 men with Will Boyle also picking up a second yellow card late in the game for a foul.
The result means that MK Dons remain in fifth in League Two, three points behind Wrexham who stay in third.
He said: “I’ve got a lot of respect for the manager, the club, their fantastic team, but it’s really frustrating. There have been legitimate goals for Mansfield and Notts County (ruled out), so I don’t know if it’s the momentum the club bring, if it’s unconsciously playing on their minds. But I’m taken aback. I’m really gutted for the boys because they did exactly what we asked them to do. They deserved it.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. Everybody in the stadium knew it was a clear goal. The reaction of their players was to just turn around, they all thought it was a goal. Everyone did apart from the officials.
“I’m going to speak to him. If I don’t speak to the referee now, nothing will come of it. I want to hear him out and to see what will happen moving forwards.
“I think the rules are that I’m not allowed to show him footage, but as men, you need to look at it and hold your hands up. We as players and managers have to. I’d like to have an interaction with him once he has seen it.”
Wrexham AFC tweeted in response to what Williamson said: “Look at the white bit” 👀
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said on the ‘ghost goal’: “I can’t see from where I was and it was not conclusive whether it’s crossed the line, or not.
“If the referee or the linesman is not sure, then they can’t give it. It was some game of football. I thought it was two good sides again.
“I was pleased with the early exchanges. We knew how they play, putting the ball at risk in their own third.
“Our pressing game was good, we got the goal, we looked really confident that we could go and score again but their goal, like goals do, gave them a lift, then Arthur’s had to make some good saves.
“In the second half we played really well. Then 11 v 10, we looked like we were going to score.
“Boyley’s sending-off has evened the game up numerically, which is a shame. It could have then gone either way.”

“Never seen anything like it” – MK Dons boss on controversial disallowed goal against Wrexham, this is what fans said on it…
@wardythemagpie: Surely the decisions against teams playing Wrexham need investigating. Ref claims this didn’t cross the line tonight.
@RichWXM: Tbf, there’s absolutely no way you can say, conclusively, that’s over the line
@daletylermk95: Where’s Ben Fosters go-pro when you need it
@andrewhewitt1: After that disallowed Notts County goal at the weekend and now this it really does look like League Two refs are doing everything in their power to get Wrexham promoted. Fairytale decisions…
@maxjoshwright: Disgusting officiating at this level once again
@RyanDawson1818: What the hell was the lino looking at
@Murray_MK: Fuck me! This is daylight robbery!!!
@timofthetown: Yikes looks a bit close 😳
@bcafcwin: You cannot and will not convince me that officials don’t favour Wrexham in this league. Would love to hear their impartial commentary, “Yeah you can see it’s clear as day no where near over the line.” #EFL
@NottsCountyZone: Shambolic from the officials. So much is on the line and they get it badly wrong time and time again.
@joshwilliamsDNO: Hahahaha the fumeeeee 😂 I love to see it
@Memeing_MK: Worst decision I think I’ve witnessed for dons in a long time, if ever. Not even controversial. It’s just factually a terrible decision. #efl
@imyhinson: refs had a stinker
@stodge_p: Crazy decision. Knee against post so how could ball not be in? Can’t even say lino was blind sided – goalies body is not obscuring view. That said, would have taken point ahead of KO. But still rather annoyed, very annoyed @MKDonsFC
@craigyjones17: Forget the dubious no goal and let’s all applaud the speed at which our number 11 runs backwards from the byline to try and block the shot 👏
@Dylan_G_Roome: You are taking the fucking piss right?
@JP051012: Even Stevie wonder gives that
@_AjmW_: Apologies pls @EFL
@charlierutter99: Absolute bollocks. Ref is needs looking into. The keeper even gives up as he knows it’s in 😂 ROBBED
@Sean_harrison_: Wrexham trying to buy the league 🙄
@hangover1990: I bet the lino is about 30 yards up the pitch aswell
@connor_mh: Can’t stand MK but this is genuinely awful?! How can not one official possibly see this the ball is behind the post at the end😭
@Ethan_MK728: The officiating is genuinely at an all time low in the efl
@LouisMKD: Officials have had an absolute shocker. Desperate to end up on Disney+
@BethanyCox04: Officiating is a joke! Robbed of 3 points
@bigdikky5: League Two referees doing league two ref things… @efl just what qualifies these people to have a whistle and cards? Have they ever seen the game played before 😂
@H4rrisonholland: How’s the lino not seen this 🤣
@Wheelbarro77108: It’s not a conspiracy anymore, officials favour Wrexham. Sooner they are out of the league the better. Cannot stand them.
@Jessif28: Fucking joke, this ref is honestly a melt
At 1-1 33 mims in and this should have been a straight red for the stamp on Cannon.
Lewington shouldn’t have even been on the pitch when he did get sent off. #WxmAFC #MKDons pic.twitter.com/WCrQGeVMlD— Simon Cooke (@WrexhamCookie) February 21, 2024
