Netherlands produce greatest set piece ever taken to score with last kick of the game vs Argentina

The Netherlands produce what is being hailed as the greatest set piece ever taken to score with the last kick of the game vs Argentina.

Wout Weghorst sent the World Cup quarter final to extra time and what a free-kick this was as Teun Koopmeiners disguised to shoot and played it inside for Weghorst to take a touch and poke his shot low beyond Emi Martinez.

It was a magnificently worked goal. Genius from Louis van Gaal, straight off the training ground with Teun Koopmeiners getting the assist of the World Cup.

Argentina lost a 2-0 lead after former Burnley player Weghorst came off the bench and netted two late goals to force extra time in their quarter final matchup of the 2022 World Cup on Friday night.

The Netherlands started the game with the usual 5-2-1-2 starting shape Louis van Gaal likes to run, but on this occasion, Memphis Depay dropped to the No. 10 playmaking role with Steven Bergwijn coming in up top to pair with Cody Gakpo.

Argentina went for a 3-5-2 shape for the first time under manager Lionel Scaloni, with Lisandro Martinez coming in at left centre back.

Possession went to the Dutch early on, but they couldn’t create much once they got into their final third.

That came to bite them in the 35th minute as Lionel Messi and Nahuel Molina exchanged some passes that saw Messi drift into the centre of Argentina’s attacking third that drew in three defenders. Messi then provided a no-look pass to Molina which split the Dutch’s backline to make it 1-0.

Argentina held on to the lead come half time and could’ve made it 2-0 early on in the second half. Alexis Mac Allister broke free on the counter and had Rodrigo De Paul legging it down the right-hand side, but Mac Allister’s threaded pass was sent too wide as De Paul would’ve had a one-on-one chance.

The Netherlands then brought on Luuk De Jong in the 65th minute for Daley Blind to get more attacking options up top and reverted to a 4-4-2 shape.

However, the next goal went to Argentina with Marcos Acuna getting a penalty against Denzel Dumfries. Messi lined up to take it, and he gave Andries Noppert no chance at stopping it to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute.

The Dutch fought back five minutes later when Wout Weghorst put home a header off a cross from Steven Berghuis.

But Weghorst wasn’t finished there. On a surprise set piece in the 11th minute of stoppage time, Teun Koopmeiners went low on the free kick and sent a pass to Weghorst, who finished into the back of the net with his left foot to send the game to extra time and produced wild scenes.

The game couldn’t be settled in extra time, so penalties it was.

Emiliano Martinez saved the first two Netherlands penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Berghuis, giving the Dutch a mountain to climb, with Lautaro Martinez scoring the decisive spot-kick to ensure Argentina prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.

This is what fans said as the Netherlands produce quite possibly the greatest set piece ever taken to score with the last kick of the game vs Argentina…
